Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United Arab Emirates

Can a Nigerian open a US dollar account at a UAE bank?

Whether a Nigerian resident in the UAE can hold US dollars at a local bank, what banks usually ask for, and why the dirham peg changes the maths.

The short answer

A Nigerian who is resident in the UAE can generally apply for a foreign currency account, including US dollars, on the same terms as other residents of the same profile: the bank decides, and it will want your residence visa, Emirates ID, passport and proof of income. Because the dirham is pegged at 3.6725 to the US dollar, holding dollars instead of dirhams in the UAE changes little in value terms; the reason to hold dollars is to pay dollar costs without converting twice.

Nigerians in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah often ask whether they can keep part of their salary in US dollars locally, for school fees abroad, for dollar obligations at home or simply because they are used to thinking of savings in dollars. The short answer is that nationality is rarely the issue; residence status, income and the bank's own product range are. This guide explains what to expect and whether a dollar account is worth it.

What UAE banks look at

A bank in the UAE opens accounts for residents based on identity, residence, income and its own compliance checks. Expect to be asked for:

  • a valid passport and UAE residence visa;
  • your Emirates ID;
  • a salary certificate or employment letter, or a trade licence if self-employed;
  • recent payslips or bank statements;
  • proof of address in the UAE, such as a tenancy contract.

Foreign currency accounts are a product choice that differs from bank to bank: some offer them to all current-account holders, some only to customers above a balance or salary level, and terms such as minimum balances and fees vary. We did not verify a specific bank's US dollar account terms for this article, so read the bank's own product page or ask a branch before applying. For the account-opening basics, see our guides to opening a UAE bank account as a Nigerian and minimum salary rules.

What the peg means for a dollar account

The UAE dirham has been pegged to the US dollar at 3.6725 since November 1997, and The National reports that the Central Bank of the UAE has repeatedly stated its commitment to the fixed peg. Its interest rates have also moved in step with the US Federal Reserve, cutting in November 2024 after the Fed did.

Three consequences follow for someone choosing between dirhams and dollars in the UAE:

  1. Little currency risk between the two. As long as the peg holds, AED 10,000 and USD 2,722.94 are worth the same now and later.
  2. The cost is in conversion. Each time a bank converts between dirhams and dollars it applies its own buy or sell rate around the peg. If your salary is in dirhams and your costs are in dollars, converting once into a dollar account and paying from it saves the cost of repeated small conversions.
  3. Interest is a separate question. Compare the interest, if any, the bank pays on each currency, and any fees for holding a foreign currency account.

Worked example

Example only. Ngozi pays her daughter's US college fees of USD 5,000 each term. At the peg that is AED 18,362.50. If her bank's selling rate for dollars is 3.69 (an illustrative rate, not a quote), the same payment costs AED 18,450, so AED 87.50 of the cost is spread. Converting once into a dollar account at a better rate, or at a time she chooses, can reduce that; paying from dirhams each term repeats it.

Dollars for Nigeria

If the reason you want dollars is to send them home, the Nigerian side matters too. Under the CBN's Foreign Exchange Manual 2026, as summarised by TheCable, people opening or paying into domiciliary accounts are not required to disclose the source of funds, and domiciliary account holders may make transfers of up to $10,000 a day. GTBank's domiciliary account page, for example, lists inflows by transfer and outflows to domiciliary accounts in Nigeria and abroad, with foreign cash withdrawals at its branches. Our guide to sending US dollars from the UAE to a Nigerian domiciliary account covers the route.

What to check first

  • Whether your bank offers a US dollar account to your customer category, and its minimum balance and fees.
  • The bank's buy and sell rates for dollars compared with the 3.6725 peg.
  • Whether the account comes with a card, and what it charges for spending in dirhams.
  • Whether outgoing dollar transfers carry a fee or intermediary charges.
  • Whether you need the dollars in the UAE at all, or only in Nigeria or elsewhere.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme personal account can be opened from any country and holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR with local account details for each. Money stays in the currency it arrived in, and Swap converts between them only when you choose, showing the rate first and the fee on its own line. Outside Nigeria, Pryme's services are provided through regulated partners; Pryme is not a UAE bank and does not hold dirhams.

Questions people ask

Can I open a dollar account in Dubai as a Nigerian?

If you are a UAE resident, generally yes, subject to the bank's own checks and product range. Nationality is rarely the deciding factor; residence, income and compliance are.

Is it worth holding dollars instead of dirhams in the UAE?

The dirham is pegged at 3.6725 to the dollar, so value barely differs. A dollar account mainly saves repeated conversion costs if you pay dollar bills.

What documents do UAE banks ask for?

Usually a passport, residence visa, Emirates ID, salary certificate or trade licence, and proof of address. Each bank sets its own list.

Can I send dollars from a UAE account to my Nigerian domiciliary account?

Yes, by international transfer. Under the CBN's 2026 manual, domiciliary account holders face no source-of-funds disclosure on deposits.
