Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United Kingdom

Omo-onile demands on land bought from the UK: what to do

Omo-onile asking for money before you can build on land you bought from the UK: what Lagos law says, which payments are lawful, and how to report it.

The short answer

In Lagos, demanding a fee or levy to let an owner build, or disrupting construction, is an offence under section 11 of the Property Protection Law 2016, punishable by a fine of up to ₦1,000,000, two years' imprisonment or both. The law allows a family head to ask for a customary fee for possession, so first check what was agreed at purchase; then document the demand, refuse cash under threat, and have your representative report it to the police and the Lagos Special Taskforce on Land Grabbers with a sworn declaration.

What counts as an unlawful demand in Lagos

"Omo-onile" refers to people who claim to be landowning family members and demand payments from buyers, often at each stage of building: for foundation, for roofing, for bringing in materials. LawPavilion's summary of the Lagos State Property Protection Law 2016, signed on 15 August 2016, lists the main offences:

ConductSectionPenalty, per LawPavilion summary
Demanding a fee or levy for construction, or disrupting or obstructing works11Fine up to ₦1,000,000, 2 years, or both
Using or threatening violence to enter property310 years
Forceful entry with weapons or armed people3(4)(b)4 years
Using force to take over property210 years
Encroacher refusing to leave when the owner requires4Fine up to ₦5,000,000, 5 years, or both
Offering land for sale without title or authority8(1)(a)Fine of ₦500,000, 6 months, or both

Section 11 has an exception: a family head may demand a customary fee for possession, or a fee ordered under a court judgment. That is why it matters what your purchase documents say. If the family head agreed a single customary payment as part of the sale, that payment is lawful; a fresh demand from a group of young men at your site is not.

What to do when the demand comes

  1. Do not pay cash under threat. Tell your builder or caretaker not to hand over money on site. Payment can encourage repeat visits.
  2. Record everything. Names if given, phone numbers, dates, photos or video taken safely, and any written demand. Ask your representative to note who was present.
  3. Check your papers. Your deed or receipt should show who sold, who signed for the family, and any customary fee already paid. Send copies to your lawyer.
  4. Report to the police at the division covering the site, and keep the extract of the report.
  5. Petition the Taskforce. The Lagos State Ministry of Justice runs a Special Taskforce on Land Grabbers, which its posts describe as working to stop land grabbing and have offenders prosecuted, with the Attorney-General as chairman. Section 10 of the law requires a petition about landed property to be accompanied by a sworn declaration and bars false petitions, so your lawyer should prepare it carefully.
  6. Let the law work. Under sections 12 to 14, as summarised by LawPavilion, the Taskforce may arrest alongside other agencies and cases go to the Special Offences Court and other courts.

The Ministry of Justice's site lists its office at the Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja, and a free legal line, 08146671562; it does not give a separate Taskforce number. Calling from a UK number may be harder than having your representative visit in person.

From the UK: who acts for you

Most UK owners cannot travel each time a demand comes. Agree in advance who acts: a lawyer for petitions and court, and a trusted caretaker for the site. Give the caretaker written instructions on what to do and not to do, and a copy of your title documents. A short specific power of attorney may be needed for some steps; ask your Nigerian property lawyer.

Example: a demand at roofing stage

Example only. A group arrives at your Ikorodu site and asks your builder for ₦750,000 before the roof goes on. Your deed shows the family head was paid an agreed customary fee at purchase. Your builder pays nothing and photographs the group, your caretaker reports at the police division the same day, and your lawyer files a petition to the Taskforce with a sworn declaration, attaching the deed and the receipt for the customary fee.

Outside Lagos

The Lagos law applies only in Lagos. Other states have their own rules. Ogun's agriculture commissioner referred to the state's Anti-Land Grabbing Law in a 2018 warning reported by Brand Spur. In other states, ask your lawyer which law applies and which agency takes complaints. The patterns in Ibadan are described in land scams in Ibadan, and the Ogun corridor in buying land in Ogun State.

Preventing the next demand

  • At purchase, get the family head and required members to sign, and record any customary fee in the deed.
  • Fence or mark the plot and keep beacons visible.
  • Introduce your caretaker to the community leaders before building starts.
  • For future purchases, follow the Lagos buying steps, including the community check.

Where Pryme fits

Paying builders and caretakers by transfer rather than cash keeps a record. A Pryme account lets you pay naira from the UK, and verifiable receipts can support your file if a payment is later disputed.

Questions people ask

Is it illegal for omo-onile to collect money in Lagos?

Demanding a fee or levy for construction is an offence under section 11 of the 2016 Lagos law, with a fine up to ₦1,000,000, two years or both.

Can a family head ask for a foundation fee?

Section 11 allows a family head to demand a customary fee for possession, or a fee under a court judgment. Check what your purchase agreed.

Where do I report land grabbers in Lagos?

To the police and the Lagos Special Taskforce on Land Grabbers under the Ministry of Justice, with a sworn declaration.

Does the Lagos land grabbers law apply in Ogun?

No. Ogun has its own Anti-Land Grabbing Law. Ask a local lawyer which agency handles complaints.
