Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United Kingdom

Novel food rules for Nigerian foods sold in the UK

A food not eaten widely in the UK or EU before 15 May 1997 needs authorisation in GB. How to check a Nigerian product and the traditional food route.

The short answer

A novel food is one not used for human consumption to a significant degree in the UK or EU before 15 May 1997, and it must be authorised before it can be sold in Great Britain. For a Nigerian food that is new to the UK market, the FSA's traditional food route applies where the food has been eaten outside the UK or EU for at least 25 continuous years; the FSA reviews a notification within four months and charges no application fee.

Many Nigerian staples have long been sold in UK shops, and for them the question rarely arises. The novel food question arises with products that have not: a newly marketed leaf, seed, extract or processed form, or a familiar plant sold in a new way. The rule is product-specific and the burden sits with the business selling it.

What counts as novel

The FSA's novel foods authorisation guidance describes novel foods as foods "not used for human consumption to a significant degree" in the UK or EU before 15 May 1997. It includes three broad groups:

  • new foods, never eaten before;
  • traditional foods eaten elsewhere in the world but not in the UK or EU before that date;
  • foods produced by new processes.

The guidance applies to Great Britain. Northern Ireland follows separate EU-based rules.

How to check a product

  1. Search the GB Register of Novel Foods Authorisations and the outcomes of earlier status consultations.
  2. Check the EU Novel Food Status Catalogue. It is a guide only; the FSA says it is "not exhaustive", so absence does not prove a food is not novel.
  3. Gather evidence of use in the UK or EU before 15 May 1997: old import records, shop catalogues, recipe books, trade invoices.
  4. If still unsure, ask the FSA for legal verification through the Article 4 consultation, submitted on the regulated products application portal.

Evidence of community use matters. A food sold for years in African grocery shops in London may have a documented pre-1997 history; collecting that proof is often the quickest way to settle the question.

Routes to authorisation

RouteWhen it fitsWhat the guidance says
Article 14 traditional food notificationFood eaten outside the UK or EU for at least 25 continuous yearsFSA reviews within four months; if no safety objections, authorised and added to the list
Article 16 applicationSafety objections raised on a traditional food notificationFurther information required
Article 10 full applicationNew foods, new processes, or no traditional historyFull safety dossier; no timescale stated on the page

The guidance says there is no fee for the application. It does not set out who may apply, so importers, producers and trade associations should read the application requirements carefully, and may decide jointly who leads.

Nigerian products that need a closer look

This library does not label any specific Nigerian food as novel; that is for the FSA. These are the situations where operators should check:

  • leaves, barks or seeds traditionally used in Nigeria but rarely sold in Europe before 1997;
  • concentrated extracts, powders or capsules made from a traditional food, such as bitter kola or hibiscus extracts (see kola and bitter kola and zobo hibiscus);
  • fermented products made with a new process;
  • foods marketed as supplements rather than ingredients.

What happens if you sell before authorisation

Novel foods need authorisation before they are placed on the market in GB. Tasting trials of unauthorised novel foods may be allowed for research, but not for publicity. Stock of an unauthorised novel food is stock you cannot lawfully sell, so the check belongs before the purchase order, not after. Pair this check with the usual rules on labelling and registration.

Novel food status is only one check

Settling novel food status does not replace the other duties of a food importer. Every importer must still register as a food business with the local council at least 28 days before trading, including businesses that only broker or distribute from an office, and must label prepacked food for GB. The border rules for the product, plant health or animal product, apply separately. Treat novel food as the first question for anything unfamiliar, because if the answer is that authorisation is needed, the other steps can wait until it is granted.

Keep a file for each product: the evidence you gathered, the catalogue entries you checked with dates, any FSA correspondence, and the final position you took. If a trading standards officer asks later, that file is your answer.

Where Pryme fits

Applications and authorisation do not involve payments, but the trade that follows does. A Pryme Business Account holds GBP and NGN with local details, so a UK importer can pay a Nigerian supplier in naira without a chain of agents; the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve. Outside Nigeria, Pryme's activities are carried out through regulated partners.
