Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Banking how-tos

Nova Bank: now a commercial bank, what it offers

How NOVA Merchant Bank became NOVA Bank, a national commercial bank, in 2024, and the savings, current and foreign currency accounts it now offers.

The short answer

NOVA Merchant Bank received the CBN's final licence to operate as a national commercial bank and announced the change on 3 July 2024, trading since as NOVA Bank (TheCable). Retail customers can now open savings, current, salary, children's, NYSC, domiciliary and diaspora accounts, with a Classic Savings account that opens with no deposit via *682# or the app.

For years NOVA was a merchant bank, serving companies and wealthy clients rather than the public. In 2024 it changed licence and began opening accounts for everyone. If you have seen both names and are not sure whether they are the same bank, or what you can open there now, this guide sets out what changed and what the bank offers, as shown on its own website in October 2026.

What changed in 2024

TheCable reported on 3 July 2024 that NOVA Merchant Bank had received the CBN's approval of "a final licence" to operate as a national commercial bank, and was trading as NOVA Bank. The bank had said in January 2024 that it was preparing for the move. According to the report:

  • The bank had served large corporations and high-net-worth individuals as a merchant bank for "over half a decade".
  • Phillips Oduoza is chairman and founder, and Wale Oyedeji is managing director and chief executive.
  • It opened its first commercial branch in Victoria Island, Lagos, with more planned in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt and Kano.
  • It described a "PHYGITAL" model: a limited number of branches combined with digital banking, aimed at retail customers and SMEs.

The bank's website footer now reads "Licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria". Its LinkedIn page address still carries the old merchant bank name, which is why both names appear in searches.

Merchant bank versus commercial bank

The CBN licenses banks in different categories. A merchant bank focuses on wholesale business, such as corporate lending, treasury and trade finance, and does not serve the mass retail market. A commercial bank can take deposits from and serve the general public. National commercial licences let a bank operate across the country. For the full list of categories see CBN bank licence types, and for the practical difference, merchant bank vs commercial bank.

Licence category also sets the capital a bank must hold. Under the CBN recapitalisation programme reported by the ICIR on 28 March 2024, a national commercial bank needed ₦200 billion in capital (paid-up capital and share premium) by 31 March 2026. We did not find a page confirming how NOVA met that requirement, so check the bank's latest statements or the CBN's list of licensed banks for its current status.

What retail customers can open now

NOVA's personal accounts page, checked in October 2026, lists these products:

AccountKey features on the bank's page
Classic SavingsZero opening balance; tiered interest; open via *682# or the app
Growbox Hybrid Savings6-month and 12-month variants; "8% – 10% per annum" as at Oct 2026; loans up to 70% of value against it
KiddikashFor ages 0 to 17, managed by a parent or guardian
Current AccountCheque book, transfers, standing orders; references required
Salary AccountNo opening or minimum balance; employer confirmation
NYSC AccountFor corps members' allowances; zero maintenance fees
Domiciliary AccountHolds USD, GBP and EUR; receives international transfers without conversion
Diaspora Savings & InvestmentFor Nigerians abroad, in NGN, USD, GBP and EUR
Institutional AccountFor clubs, cooperatives and associations

Growbox returns are the bank's published range in October 2026 and can change; check the current figure on novabank.ng or with the bank before you invest. For businesses, the site lists the NOVA SME Account, SME Plus, point-of-sale terminals, trade services and corporate banking.

How you bank with NOVA day to day

Because the bank chose a model with few branches, most everyday banking is meant to happen on digital channels. Its website lists mobile banking, NOVA cards, internet banking and USSD on *682#, which can also open a Classic Savings account. The USSD page says registration can be done without a card using your digital channel transaction PIN. For cash, cheques and some account types, the branch locator on the site shows where to go. If you rely on branches, check the locator before choosing the bank, since the network was still being built out when the commercial licence took effect. See NOVA Bank USSD code for the steps.

Is money at NOVA Bank insured?

As a commercial bank, NOVA falls under the NDIC's cover for deposit money banks, which the NDIC's FAQ sets at a maximum of ₦5,000,000 per depositor per bank. The bank's Classic Savings page also describes deposits as NDIC-insured. You can check any bank in the NDIC's insured banks directory.

What to check first

  1. That you are dealing with the real bank: novabank.ng, and the phone lines and emails listed on its contact page.
  2. The account's current interest rate and charges, which are time-sensitive.
  3. Whether a branch is near you, using the branch locator, if you need cash or cheque services.
  4. The documents for your chosen account; see how to open a NOVA Bank account.

If you need to reach the bank, see NOVA Bank customer care.

Where Pryme fits

If foreign currency is the reason you are looking at NOVA's domiciliary or diaspora accounts, a Pryme account holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR in one place with local account details for each; see multicurrency accounts.

Questions people ask

Is NOVA Bank the same as NOVA Merchant Bank?

Yes. NOVA Merchant Bank received a national commercial banking licence and began trading as NOVA Bank, announced on 3 July 2024 (TheCable).

Can individuals open an account with NOVA Bank?

Yes. Since becoming a commercial bank, NOVA offers personal accounts including Classic Savings, current, salary, children's, NYSC and domiciliary accounts.

What is NOVA Bank Growbox interest rate?

The bank's page showed "8% – 10% per annum" for its 6-month and 12-month variants in October 2026. Rates change; check novabank.ng for the current figure.

Who owns NOVA Bank?

TheCable names Phillips Oduoza as chairman and founder. We did not find a full shareholder list on a page we opened.
