Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

South Africa

Signing a power of attorney in South Africa for use in Nigeria

Draft in Nigeria, sign before a South African notary, authenticate and legalise, then stamp and register at home. Each step and why it matters.

The short answer

Have a Nigerian lawyer draft the power of attorney, sign it before a South African notary public (a power of attorney signed outside Nigeria must be witnessed by a notary, judge or magistrate), then get it authenticated in South Africa and legalised by the Nigerian mission, since Nigeria is not an Apostille party. In Nigeria it is stamped and, for land, registered; an unregistered land power of attorney can be refused as evidence.

Short answer: have a Nigerian lawyer draft the power of attorney, then sign it in front of a South African notary public. A Nigerian practice guide says a power of attorney signed outside Nigeria must be witnessed by a notary public, a judge or a magistrate. Then have it authenticated in South Africa and legalised by the Nigerian mission, because Nigeria is not a party to the Apostille Convention. Send the original home, where it is stamped and, for land, registered. An unstamped or unregistered land power of attorney can be refused as evidence.

Why the drafting should start in Nigeria

A power of attorney is used in Nigeria, so it has to work under Nigerian law and the rules of the registry or bank that will rely on it. A South African notary witnesses your signature and confirms who you are. The notary is not there to check that the document will satisfy a land registry in Lagos or Enugu. Ask a Nigerian lawyer to draft it with:

  • your full names exactly as on your Nigerian passport;
  • the attorney's full names and address in Nigeria;
  • a precise description of the property, account or matter, with title document numbers;
  • the specific powers (sell, lease, collect rent, sign a deed, appear before a registry) rather than "do anything";
  • whether it is revocable, and for how long it runs.

Signing in South Africa

LawPavilion's guide to powers of attorney in Nigeria states that one executed outside Nigeria "must be witnessed by either a Notary Public or a Judge or Magistrate". In South Africa, the practical choice is a notary. Take:

  1. the unsigned document, printed single-sided, with the attorney's details complete;
  2. your Nigerian passport and your South African visa or permit;
  3. any supporting title document copies the notary may want to annex;
  4. your own list of questions, since some notaries will want you to confirm you understand the document.

Sign only in front of the notary. The notary adds a notarial certificate and seal. If you also need an affidavit (for example, to confirm a lost title document), the same rule applies: an IRB summary of Nigeria's Evidence Act says affidavits sworn outside Nigeria can be sworn before a judge, magistrate, notary or an authorised officer at a Nigerian embassy or consulate.

Authentication and legalisation

The Hague Conference's status table lists South Africa as an Apostille Convention party since 30 April 1995 and does not list Nigeria. So the notarised document usually goes through two further steps:

  1. authentication of the notary's signature by the South African authority (most applicants are directed to DIRCO's legalisation section; check its current process);
  2. legalisation by the Nigerian mission. The Johannesburg consulate's document authentication service includes notarisation within its umbrella. Ask it whether it legalises a South African notarised power of attorney and what it charges: +27 (0) 11 442 3620, cgjhb@nigerianconsulatesa.org.

The legalisation chain is explained in legalising South African documents for use in Nigeria.

When it reaches Nigeria

LawPavilion's guide says powers of attorney attract fixed stamp duty under state laws, and that stamping comes before registration under the state's land instruments registration law. A land power of attorney that is not registered is inadmissible as evidence of the transaction. The attorney, or your lawyer, takes the original to be stamped and then registered at the state lands registry.

Common mistakes

  • Signing the document before you reach the notary.
  • Names that differ from your passport, for example a missing middle name.
  • A general power that a bank or registry will not accept for a specific transaction.
  • Sending a scan to Nigeria instead of the legalised original.
  • Not keeping a certified copy for yourself.

Ending or changing it

The same guide says a power of attorney can be revoked expressly, by implication or by operation of law, and one made by deed is revoked by deed. A second power of attorney does not on its own revoke the first. If you change attorney, sign a deed of revocation, follow the same signing and legalisation steps, and tell the registry and anyone who has relied on the old one.

Where Pryme fits

A power of attorney is often for someone collecting rent or paying bills at home. A Pryme account held in your own name lets you send naira to the attorney for specific costs while you keep control of the account, and the Personal Assistant prepares payments that move only after you approve. The app shows the rate and the fee before you approve.

Questions people ask

Can I sign a Nigerian power of attorney in South Africa?

Yes, before a notary public. Nigerian practice requires a notary, judge or magistrate for one signed abroad.

Is an apostille enough for Nigeria?

Nigeria is not an Apostille party, so expect authentication plus legalisation by the Nigerian mission.

Does a power of attorney need to be registered in Nigeria?

For land, yes. It is stamped first, then registered at the state lands registry.

How do I cancel a power of attorney from South Africa?

Sign a deed of revocation with the same formalities and notify the registry and relying parties.
