2023Multicurrency

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Loans

NIRSAL Plc vs NIRSAL MFB: which one gives loans?

NIRSAL Plc guarantees and de-risks agricultural lending; NIRSAL Microfinance Bank is the one that lends. What each does for a borrower.

The short answer

NIRSAL Microfinance Bank is the one that gives loans; NIRSAL Plc does not. NIRSAL Plc's own FAQ says it "is not a bank and not a lender" and is "different from NIRSAL Microfinance Bank", with a different mandate, management and offices; NIRSAL Plc guarantees and de-risks loans made by banks, while NIRSAL MFB is a bank that lends to customers.

The shared name causes real confusion. Farmers write to NIRSAL Plc asking for loans; borrowers chasing a TCF or AGSMEIS balance contact NIRSAL Plc when the loan was from the microfinance bank. Scammers exploit the mix-up too. NIRSAL Plc answers the question directly on its FAQ page, and the difference decides which door you knock on.

The short answer, side by side

NIRSAL PlcNIRSAL Microfinance Bank
What it isNon-bank financial institution wholly owned by the CBN, per its FAQA microfinance bank
Lends to the public? No: "not a bank and not a lender"Yes

Who it servesBanks, MFBs, DFIs, fintechs, governments, development partnersIndividual and business customers
Who you contact for a loanYour bank or MFB, which may seek NIRSAL coverNIRSAL MFB directly

What NIRSAL Plc does for a borrower

NIRSAL Plc works behind the lender. Its Credit Risk Guarantee covers up to 75% of principal and accrued interest on qualifying agricultural loans, which makes banks more willing to lend to agriculture. It also structures projects, trains loan officers and provides digital loan evaluation tools, according to its FAQ. A farmer feels its effect as a bank that says yes, not as money from NIRSAL. Our guide to the NIRSAL credit risk guarantee explains the mechanics and a worked example.

NIRSAL Plc names its priorities as value chain structuring, project preparation, credit guarantees, aggregation support, digital risk tools and agro-commodity exports and feedlots. If you run a cooperative, aggregator or export business, these are the areas where a lender is most likely to bring NIRSAL in.

What NIRSAL MFB does for a borrower

NIRSAL Microfinance Bank is a lender in its own right. It has been the delivery channel for several public schemes, including the CBN's COVID-19 Targeted Credit Facility (TCF) and the NIRSAL MFB window of the Nigeria Youth Investment Fund. Its own website could not be reached when we tried in October 2026, so for its current products and terms see our NIRSAL MFB loan products guide, and confirm details with the bank at a branch or through its verified channels. For account and contact details, see NIRSAL MFB customer care.

Which one to contact

  • You want a farm or agribusiness loan from your bank: talk to the bank. Ask if it can seek NIRSAL CRG cover.
  • You want a loan from NIRSAL MFB: go to NIRSAL MFB.
  • You have a TCF, AGSMEIS or NYIF loan to repay: those were delivered through NIRSAL MFB; see NIRSAL MFB loan recovery.
  • You are a lender wanting a guarantee: NIRSAL Plc. Its CRG page gives a contact email for financial institutions.

A worked example

Example: Bola runs a poultry farm in Ogun State and wants ₦5,000,000 for a new pen. She emails NIRSAL Plc asking for a loan and is told it does not lend. She then approaches her commercial bank, which is a NIRSAL counterparty. The bank lends the ₦5,000,000 and seeks NIRSAL cover for up to 75% of it (₦3,750,000 of principal at most). Bola owes the bank the full ₦5,000,000 plus interest. Separately, her brother applies to NIRSAL MFB for a small business loan; there, the bank itself is the lender.

Avoiding scams that use the NIRSAL name

Because both names are well known, fake "NIRSAL loan" pages and WhatsApp agents are common. A few checks help:

  1. NIRSAL Plc does not lend, so anyone offering a NIRSAL Plc loan is misdescribing it.
  2. Use only the official websites and verified social accounts of each institution.
  3. Do not pay an upfront "processing" or "approval" fee to an individual.
  4. Check that a loan app or agent claiming a link to either body is a licensed institution; our guide on whether NIRSAL Microfinance Bank is legit covers the checks.

Questions to ask a lender about NIRSAL cover

  1. Is your institution a NIRSAL Credit Risk Guarantee counterparty?
  2. Will you seek cover for my loan, and does it change the interest rate or collateral you ask for?
  3. Does any interest drawback or rebate apply, and what must I do to qualify?
  4. If I repay late, who contacts me: you or NIRSAL?

The answers tell you whether NIRSAL is actually involved in your loan, and they make clear that your contract is with the lender, whichever institution provides the cover.

If a lender says NIRSAL is involved but cannot answer these, ask for it in writing before you sign. A guarantee arrangement is between the lender and NIRSAL Plc, so your offer letter, not a verbal assurance, is the document that sets your obligations.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme has no link to either NIRSAL body. For businesses comparing finance routes, our SME funding directory lists the main public and private options.

Questions people ask

Is NIRSAL the same as NIRSAL Microfinance Bank?

No. NIRSAL Plc's FAQ says they are distinct institutions with different mandates, managements and locations, and that NIRSAL is not a bank while NIRSAL Microfinance Bank is.

Does NIRSAL Plc give loans?

No. Its FAQ says NIRSAL "is not a bank and not a lender". It provides guarantees and risk tools to lenders.

Who gave the TCF and AGSMEIS loans, NIRSAL or NIRSAL MFB?

NIRSAL Microfinance Bank delivered the CBN's Targeted Credit Facility, according to reporting on the recovery drive; it is the lender to contact about those balances.

Who owns NIRSAL Plc?

NIRSAL Plc's FAQ says it is wholly owned by the Central Bank of Nigeria.
