Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Nigerian stock dividends paid to a US resident: getting them

How a Nigerian living in the US gets NGX dividends paid: e-dividend mandates, BVN and NIN, 10% withholding and the US return.

The short answer

Nigerian companies pay dividends through their registrars into a Nigerian bank account named on an e-dividend mandate, which links your shareholding to your BVN and account. From the US you set up or fix the mandate through the SEC's self-service portal, your registrar or your Nigerian bank; 10% Nigerian withholding tax is normally deducted before payment, and the dividend still goes on your US return.

If you own shares on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) and now live in the US, the dividend does not follow you. It follows the instruction held by the company's registrar. When that instruction is missing or out of date, the payment sits unpaid and becomes an unclaimed dividend. Getting dividends to arrive reliably is mostly a paperwork job, and almost all of it can be done without flying home.

How a Nigerian dividend reaches you

Each listed company appoints a registrar that keeps its register of members and pays dividends. Your shares themselves sit in the Central Securities Clearing System (CSCS) under your Clearing House Number (CHN), opened through a stockbroker. The CSCS FAQs are blunt about the split: for dividend and bonus claims you contact the registrars, not CSCS.

The registrar pays electronically into the Nigerian bank account on your e-dividend mandate. The SEC's July 2024 circular on its revamped e-dividend mandate management system says shareholders can mandate themselves through the NIBSS self-service portal, check whether they appear on the SEC's non-mandated list, or approach the registrar or their bank to collect past dividends and receive future ones electronically.

What the mandate needs

  • Your name exactly as it appears on the share register (old names and middle names cause most rejections).
  • Your BVN and a Nigerian bank account in the same name. BusinessDay's explainer lists name, BVN, account number and contact details as the core of the registrar's mandate form.
  • Your CHN, if your shares are held in CSCS. CSCS says its onboarding now integrates BVN and NIN verification, so an up-to-date NIN record helps when you update details.
  • Your current phone number and email, so the registrar can send dividend notices abroad.

Setting it up from the US: steps

  1. Search the SEC non-mandated list (eportal.sec.gov.ng/non-mandated) for your name to see which companies hold dividends with no mandate.
  2. Try the NIBSS self-service e-dividend portal linked in the SEC circular. It works online, so distance is not a barrier if your BVN details match.
  3. If the portal fails, download the registrar's e-dividend mandate form for each company. BusinessDay notes the form is signed and stamped at your bank and returned to the broker or registrar; your Nigerian bank may accept it through its diaspora or online channel, so ask before you post anything.
  4. Keep proof: the registrar's acknowledgement and the first dividend credit on your statement.
  5. Repeat per registrar. One mandate does not cover every company if they use different registrars.

Tax: what is taken in Nigeria and what you report in the US

Nigerian dividends are normally paid after withholding tax. Bamboo's June 2026 tax guide says dividends on Nigerian shares carry 10% WHT deducted before payment, and the NiDCOM-hosted NGEX diaspora guide also gives 10% for dividends. Whether that is the end of your Nigerian liability depends on your residence status under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025; check with a Nigerian tax adviser.

On the US side, dividends from a Nigerian company are part of your worldwide income. The US has no income tax treaty with Nigeria (the IRS treaty list has none), so no treaty rate applies. The IRS foreign tax credit page explains that qualifying foreign income taxes can be claimed as a credit (Form 1116) or deduction, and that the amount withheld is not automatically the amount that qualifies. Schedule B asks about foreign accounts; your Nigerian brokerage and bank accounts may also count towards FBAR, which applies when foreign accounts together exceed $10,000 at any time in the year.

Worked example (illustrative)

ItemAmount
Declared dividend, 20,000 shares at ₦2.50 (example)₦50,000
10% withholding tax₦5,000
Credited to your Nigerian account₦45,000
Reported on US returnGross ₦50,000 converted to dollars; ₦5,000 tax considered for the foreign tax credit

Information only, not tax advice.

Common reasons dividends go missing

  • Shares bought years ago on paper certificates and never dematerialised into CSCS.
  • A closed or dormant Nigerian account still on the mandate.
  • Name changes after marriage that do not match BVN records.
  • A company that changed registrar, so the old mandate never transferred.

If past payments are stuck, see our guide to recovering unclaimed Nigerian dividends from the US, and if you have no CHN yet, opening a CSCS account from the US.

Where Pryme fits

Dividends are paid into a Nigerian naira account. A Pryme account can be opened from the US and holds NGN alongside USD, GBP and EUR, with naira deposits held by a licensed Nigerian microfinance bank. Dividends that land in naira stay in naira until you choose to Swap, and the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve. Check with your registrar that your Pryme naira account details are accepted on the mandate. See multicurrency accounts.

Questions people ask

Can I receive Nigerian dividends in dollars in the US?

Registrars pay naira dividends into a Nigerian bank account named on your e-dividend mandate. Converting to dollars is a separate step you take afterwards.

Do I need to travel to Nigeria to update my e-dividend mandate?

Usually not. The SEC says you can use the NIBSS self-service portal or approach your registrar or bank. Some registrars ask for a notarised form from abroad.

How much tax is taken from Nigerian dividends?

Sources including Bamboo's 2026 guide and the NGEX diaspora guide give 10% withholding tax, deducted before payment.

Do I report Nigerian dividends to the IRS?

Yes. US residents report worldwide income. Nigerian tax withheld may count towards the foreign tax credit; there is no US-Nigeria tax treaty.
