Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Nigerian public holidays a US company must plan for

The Nigerian public holiday calendar a US company must plan payroll and payments around, how Muslim holidays are declared, and how weekend holidays work.

The short answer

Nigeria's public holidays are New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Workers' Day (1 May), Democracy Day (12 June), National Day (1 October), Christmas Day and Boxing Day, plus Eid el-Fitr, Eid el-Kabir and Eid el-Maulud, which are declared each year. The Public Holidays Act also lets the federal government declare extra days. A US company should move payroll and statutory payments forward when one of these falls on or just before a due date.

The calendar

The Public Holidays Act sets the core list, and the President can appoint additional days nationally and a state governor within a state (s.2). The 2004 print of the Act, as published by PLAC, lists New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Workers' Day on 1 May, Democracy Day (printed as 29 May), National Day on 1 October and Christmas Day, with days declared by the minister for Id el Fitr, Id el Kabir and Id el Maulud. That print predates later changes: current lists, such as the one on Wikipedia, give Democracy Day as 12 June and include Boxing Day on 26 December.

HolidayDateShared with US Federal Reserve calendar?
New Year's Day1 JanuaryYes
Good FridayFriday before EasterNo
Easter MondayMonday after EasterNo
Eid el-FitrEnd of Ramadan, declaredNo
Workers' Day1 MayNo
Democracy Day12 JuneNo (US Juneteenth is 19 June)
Eid el-KabirDeclaredNo
Eid el-MauludDeclaredNo
National Day1 OctoberNo
Christmas Day25 DecemberYes
Boxing Day26 DecemberNo

Only two days overlap with the Federal Reserve's list. Everything else is a day when Lagos is closed and New York is open, or the reverse. Our sister site keeps the dated list for each year: Nigeria public holidays 2027.

Why the Muslim holidays need extra care

Eid el-Fitr, Eid el-Kabir and Eid el-Maulud follow the lunar calendar, and the Act leaves their dates to declaration. In practice the federal government announces them shortly before each festival, and may declare more than one day. A US finance team cannot lock these into a calendar in January. Pencil in the likely week, then confirm when the announcement comes.

When a holiday falls on a weekend

The Act's section 5 deals with holidays that land on a weekend. As summarised from the PLAC text, a holiday falling on a single Saturday or Sunday does not get a substitute day under that section, and where a Sunday and Monday are both affected, only the Monday is observed. Separately, the government can use its s.2 power to declare a weekday off, so announcements around weekend holidays are worth watching. In 2026, Christmas Day falls on a Friday and Boxing Day on a Saturday, so watch for an announcement about Monday 28 December.

Section 4 of the Act says no one can be compelled to do on a public holiday anything they could not be compelled to do on a Sunday. Staff contracts and your leave policy decide holiday pay and working on holidays; see leave and public holiday entitlements.

Payroll and remittance timing

Holidays matter most when they sit on or near a due date.

  • Salaries. If payday falls on a holiday, pay the working day before. Lagos banks and the payroll team will be off.
  • PAYE. Due by the 10th of the following month (PwC, reviewed May 2026). A holiday on the 9th or 10th means paying earlier, not later.
  • Pension. PenCom's 2023 FAQ gives employers 7 working days from paying salaries. Holidays are not working days, so they extend the window, but count carefully in Easter and Eid weeks.
  • Supplier payments. Release before a long weekend so suppliers are not waiting through it.

If you use a Lagos payroll provider

Many US companies run Nigerian payroll through a local provider or an employer of record. Ask the provider for its holiday calendar in January and its cut-off for receiving funds before each payday. Providers usually need funds a few working days before salaries go out, and a Nigerian holiday in that window shortens it. Agree in writing who watches for declared holidays, and what happens if one is announced after funds have been sent. See paying staff through an EOR platform.

A worked example: the end of 2026

December payday
Example: staff are paid on the 24th
Holidays
Christmas Friday 25 December; Boxing Day Saturday 26 December; possible declared day Monday 28 December
US side
Federal Reserve closed Friday 25 December
Plan
Fund the Lagos payroll from the US by Tuesday 22 December; release salaries Thursday 24 December
Pension
Count 7 working days from 24 December, skipping 25 December, any declared day and 1 January
PAYE for December
Due by 10 January 2027

Steps for January each year

  1. Enter the fixed Nigerian holidays and the Federal Reserve holidays in one shared calendar.
  2. Mark the expected weeks for the two Eids and Eid el-Maulud as provisional.
  3. Move any payday that lands on a holiday to the working day before.
  4. Set reminders to check for government announcements a week before each provisional holiday.

Where Pryme fits

The Compliance agent on a Pryme Business Account can keep a calendar like this and prepare reminders, with a person approving payroll and remittances. See Compliance agent and payroll.

Questions people ask

What are the public holidays in Nigeria?

New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Workers' Day (1 May), Democracy Day (12 June), National Day (1 October), Christmas, Boxing Day, Eid el-Fitr, Eid el-Kabir and Eid el-Maulud, plus any extra days the government declares.

Is Democracy Day in Nigeria on 29 May or 12 June?

Current lists give 12 June. The 2004 print of the Public Holidays Act shows 29 May because it predates the change.

How are Sallah holidays declared in Nigeria?

The Act leaves Muslim holiday dates to declaration, and the federal government announces them shortly before each festival.

If a Nigerian holiday falls on Saturday, is Monday a holiday?

Not automatically under section 5 of the Act, but the government often declares a weekday off. Check the announcement.
