Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Nigerian passport renewal for a US-based teenager: consent rules

Until 18, a Nigerian passport renewal needs parental consent, both parents' data pages and a birth certificate. What US missions ask for.

The short answer

A teenager under 18 renewing a Nigerian passport in the US is treated as a minor: the NIS asks for a consent letter from a parent, proof of a parent's Nigerian citizenship and a photo endorsed by the consenting parent, and the New York consulate asks for a consent letter from both parents, both parents' data pages and the birth certificate. A court order is needed where one parent has sole custody.

Teenagers grow out of passports in more ways than one. A 15-year-old's booklet issued when they were ten will look nothing like them, and families often discover at renewal time that the rules for minors still apply in full, however tall the applicant is. Here is what the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and the US missions say, and where they differ.

Who counts as a minor

The NIS passports page treats applicants under 18 as minors and adults as 18 and over. That has two practical effects for a teenager in the US: the consent rules below apply until the 18th birthday, and the 64-page, 10-year passport is for adults only. The Atlanta consulate's fee page lists the 10-year booklet as 18 and over. A 17-year-old renewing now gets a 5-year passport.

What the NIS asks for

For minors, the NIS lists:

  • the completed application form and one photo endorsed by the consenting parent or parents
  • evidence of the parent's or parents' Nigerian citizenship
  • an NPC birth certificate for minors born in Nigeria
  • a letter of consent from either parent
  • the acknowledgement slip and proof of payment
  • for adopted children, the adoption court order and a letter from the State Ministry of Women Affairs or Child Development

A teenager born in the US will not have an NPC certificate; the US birth certificate showing the parents is what the US missions ask for.

What the US missions ask for

The New York consulate, which covers 20 states including New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Illinois and Michigan, lists for minors: a consent letter from both parents, both parents' passport data pages, the birth certificate, and a court order if one parent has sole custody. It also says names must match the NIN, application and payment exactly.

The Washington DC embassy, for its emergency travel certificate for minors, asks for the birth certificate, both parents' Nigerian data pages (at least one parent Nigerian) and consent signed by both parents. Its passport page does not set out separate minor rules, so families using DC should follow the stricter standard and bring both parents' consent.

When one parent is absent

  • Sole custody: bring the court order. New York lists it specifically.
  • Parent abroad or unreachable: ask the mission before booking what it will accept; none of the pages we checked describes a procedure.
  • Parent deceased: bring the death certificate and ask the mission in advance.

Names and the NIN

Renewal on the NIS portal starts by verifying the applicant's NIN and date of birth and compares the current passport details with the NIN record. Atlanta asks that names and date of birth appear in the same order as in the passport and NIN. If your teenager's NIN, old passport and US birth certificate spell a name differently, sort that out first: a mismatch is one of the commonest reasons an application stalls.

Steps

  1. Check the old passport's expiry; Atlanta says you can apply up to 6 months before it.
  2. Fill the renewal form on the NIS portal in the teenager's exact NIN name, and pay there.
  3. Book the biometric appointment at your mission.
  4. Prepare the consent letter signed by both parents, both data pages, the birth certificate, the old booklet and any custody order.
  5. Attend with the teenager and at least one parent; the DC embassy says applicants must be physically present on the booked date.

Travel after the renewal

Consent does not stop at the passport office. The US State Department's Nigeria page, updated 25 June 2026, says Nigerian minors, including those who are also US citizens, who travel without a parent need notarised written permission. If your teenager is flying to Nigeria for the summer with an aunt or a school group, prepare that letter as well, signed by both parents and notarised, and give a copy to the adult travelling with them.

The same page says US-Nigeria dual nationals are now required to have a valid Nigerian passport to leave Nigeria. A teenager who also holds a US passport should check both expiry dates together, because one valid passport does not cover the other.

Turning 18 during the process

If the 18th birthday falls between payment and the appointment, ask the mission which rules it will apply. The safest course is to apply either clearly before 18, with full parental consent, or after the birthday as an adult, which also opens the 10-year booklet.

Where Pryme fits

The Personal Assistant in a Pryme Personal Account can set a reminder for passport expiry dates, so the next renewal is not a rush. It prepares; nothing happens without your approval.

Questions people ask

Does my 16-year-old need my consent to renew a Nigerian passport?

Yes. Applicants under 18 are minors for the NIS, and US missions ask for a parental consent letter and the parents' data pages.

Do both parents have to sign the consent letter?

The NIS says either parent; the New York consulate asks for both. Bring both unless your mission confirms one is enough.

Can a 17-year-old get a 10-year Nigerian passport?

No. The 10-year, 64-page passport is for applicants 18 and over.

What if one parent has sole custody?

Bring the court order showing sole custody; the New York consulate lists it for minors.
