Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Using your Nigerian passport as ID for banks abroad

Banks abroad generally accept a valid Nigerian passport as photo ID, but often want proof of residence status and address alongside it. What to bring.

The short answer

A valid, unexpired Nigerian passport is generally accepted as photo identity by banks and money services abroad, because it is a government-issued document with your name, photo and a unique number. Most institutions also want proof of your right to be in the country (in the UK, an eVisa checked with a share code) and proof of a local address, so the passport is rarely enough on its own.

For a new arrival, the green passport is often the only photo ID that matches every other document. Whether it is enough depends on what the bank must check under its country's anti-money-laundering rules: who you are, whether you are allowed to be there, and where you live.

Why a passport usually passes the identity test

Identity rules abroad are written around government-issued photo documents. Canada's FINTRAC, for example, says photo ID must be authentic, valid and current, issued by a federal, provincial or territorial government or a foreign government equivalent, and show your name, photo and a unique identifier. It gives foreign passports among acceptable examples and says municipal IDs are not acceptable. A valid Nigerian passport fits that description. In the US, the IRS treats a passport as the only document that can on its own prove both identity and foreign status for an ITIN application.

The documents banks pair with it

What the bank checksTypical documentExample
IdentityValid Nigerian passportData page plus photo match
Right to be in the countryResidence or visa statusUK eVisa via share code; US I-94; Irish IRP card
AddressRecent local documentUtility bill, bank or tax letter, tenancy agreement
Tax number (some countries)Local tax or social security numberSSN or ITIN in the US, SIN in Canada

United Kingdom

The Home Office's leaflet for financial providers explains that BRPs have been replaced by eVisas, that an eVisa counts as an identity document under the Identity Documents Act 2010, and that banks can check status in real time using a share code and your date of birth. It lists among acceptable status evidence signed passports with valid UK entry clearance. In practice that means bringing your passport and a fresh share code.

United States

State ID systems give a feel for how a foreign passport is weighed. New Jersey's six-point ID brochure (2013) scores a foreign passport with a valid I-94 and USCIS verification at four points as a primary document; you still need secondary documents and proof of address. Banks set their own lists, but expect a similar pairing of passport and immigration record.

Ireland

WorldRemit's Irish sender FAQ, for example, accepts a current passport as ID but says proof of address must be issued or certified by authorities within Ireland. That kind of local-address rule is common across European institutions.

Where a Nigerian passport causes friction

  • Expiry. FINTRAC requires ID to be current when verified, and many institutions apply similar rules. See expired Nigerian passport and bank checks.
  • Name order and spelling. If your passport, visa and employment contract show names in different orders or with a different middle name, the bank may pause the application. Make sure your NIN and passport agree before renewing; the Nigeria library's guide to contactless passport renewal abroad covers the NIN match.
  • Remote checks. Online banks verify a photo of the data page and a selfie. FINTRAC says it is not enough merely to view a person and their ID through a video call without authenticating the document. Glare, worn lamination or an old booklet can fail automated checks; try in daylight on a dark surface.
  • Address before you have one. Without a local address document, you may need a basic account first; see opening a bank account before you have an address and proof of address when you have just arrived.

Dual nationals and renewal timing

If you also hold a passport from your new country, either may satisfy identity, but the bank will still record every nationality and tax residence you declare on its forms, so declare both. If your Nigerian passport is your only photo ID, plan its renewal well ahead of expiry. The Nigerian Consulate in Atlanta, for example, says you may apply for renewal at most six months before expiry, and missions abroad can take weeks to produce a booklet, so a gap without valid ID is easy to fall into.

What to bring to a bank appointment

  1. Your valid Nigerian passport (original), plus any foreign passport if you are a dual national.
  2. Your visa or residence status evidence, such as a share code generated that day.
  3. Proof of address, or the bank's list of alternatives for newcomers.
  4. Employment letter or university letter.
  5. Your local tax or social security number if you have one.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme Personal and Business accounts can be opened from any country, with identity checks done in the app (open an account). Accounts are protected with an authenticator app and a transaction PIN (security).

Questions people ask

Will a UK bank accept my Nigerian passport?

Generally yes as identity, but expect to show your immigration status (an eVisa via share code) and proof of address. Each bank has its own document list.

Can I open a US bank account with only a Nigerian passport?

Identity is usually covered by the passport, but banks typically also ask for your I-94 or visa record, an address and, often, an SSN or ITIN.

Is my old Nigerian passport valid ID abroad?

Only if it has not expired. Rules such as FINTRAC's require ID to be valid and current at the time of verification.

My passport and visa show my names differently. Will that matter?

It can delay checks. Ask the bank to note the variation and bring a document linking the names, such as a marriage certificate or deed poll.
