Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Using a Nigerian dollar card in the UK: rates and limits

How a Nigerian US dollar debit card is converted to pounds in UK shops and ATMs, the cross-currency fees banks publish, and daily limits.

The short answer

A Nigerian dollar card linked to a domiciliary account works in UK shops, online and at ATMs, but every pound payment is converted from dollars and most banks add a cross-currency fee. Fidelity's FAQ, for example, lists 3% for dollar-card payments in other currencies, plus ATM owners' charges. Daily limits are set by each bank: Stanbic IBTC's USD debit card allows US$1,000 at ATMs, US$3,500 online and US$6,500 at tills per day.

A dollar card is a debit card on a Nigerian domiciliary account. For Nigerians in the UK it is often the most dependable card from home: it spends money already in foreign currency, so it does not use up a naira card's international allowance. But the UK runs on pounds, so each payment goes through a conversion. Knowing how that is priced, and the daily caps, tells you when the card is a good tool and when it is an expensive one.

How a dollar card payment in pounds is priced

  1. The UK shop charges in pounds.
  2. The card scheme (Visa or Mastercard) converts the pounds into dollars at its rate.
  3. Your Nigerian bank debits the dollars and adds its own fee for a transaction in a currency other than the card's.
  4. At an ATM, the machine's owner may add its own charge.

The bank's fee in step 3 is the part you can compare, because banks publish it.

What banks publish

Fidelity dollar cardIssuance ₦1,075 (from naira account); US$10 a year maintenance; 2% on dollar-to-dollar, 3% on dollar to other currencies; ATM owner chargesUS$5,000 overall; ATM US$1,000; POS and web US$5,000 (period not stated)Fidelity FAQ (undated)

Stanbic IBTC GBP debit cardNot stated on the FAQDaily: ATM £500; web £1,500; POS £3,000Stanbic card FAQ
Wema MasterCard dollar debitCard US$3; annual US$10; ATM US$2 per withdrawal; POS and web freeDaily: ATM US$1,000; POS US$10,000; web US$5,000Wema help centre, Dec 2021
UBA World USD cardNot statedPOS up to US$20,000; online US$10,000Nairametrics, 7 Sep 2026

The CBN's Guide to Charges (effective January 2020) sets foreign-currency card maintenance at US$10 a year, which matches the Fidelity and Wema figures. Wema's page dates from 2021, so confirm it before relying on it.

Worked example: £200 at a UK shop

Example only, with an illustrative rate. Using Fidelity's published 3% cross-currency fee:

StepAmount
Purchase£200.00
Scheme converts at an example rate of US$1.33 per £1US$266.00
Fidelity's 3% fee on dollar-to-other-currency useUS$7.98
Total debited from your domiciliary accountUS$273.98

The 3% is the visible cost; the scheme's rate is the other part. If you pay for things in pounds every week, that 3% adds up quickly: on £1,000 of monthly spending it is about US$40 a month at this rate.

A pound card avoids the double step

Some banks issue cards on pound domiciliary accounts. Stanbic IBTC lists a GBP debit card with its own daily limits. Spending pounds in the UK from a pound balance removes the dollar conversion entirely, though the bank's general card fees still apply.

Why a dollar card is declined in the UK

GTBank's help centre lists common reasons for card declines, including a card that has not been activated, a wrong PIN three times in a day, exceeding the daily ATM limit, a magstripe-only terminal, insufficient funds in the dollar account and a billing-address mismatch. The last one catches people online: UK websites often check the billing address, and your card is registered to a Nigerian address. Updating the address with the bank can help; see updating your Nigerian bank account with a UK address.

When the dollar card makes sense

  • For occasional UK spending when you already hold dollars in Nigeria and want to avoid using a naira card allowance.
  • For dollar-priced online payments, where no cross-currency fee applies beyond any dollar-to-dollar charge your bank lists.
  • Less so for everyday UK spending, where a UK debit card on a pound account costs nothing to convert.

Compare with the naira card in using a naira card in UK shops, and see holding dollars in a UK account if your dollars could sit in the UK instead. For bank-specific detail, see how to get a GTBank dollar card.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme's multicurrency account holds dollars and pounds side by side, each with local account details, so you can move value between them with Swap when you choose, seeing the rate first and the fee on its own line, rather than paying a conversion on every card payment.

Questions people ask

Can I use my Nigerian dollar card in UK shops?

Yes, where the card is a Visa or Mastercard linked to your domiciliary account. Payments in pounds are converted to dollars and most banks add a cross-currency fee.

How much does a Nigerian dollar card charge in pounds?

It varies. Fidelity's FAQ lists 3% for dollar-card transactions in other currencies, plus ATM owner charges. Check your bank's tariff.

What are dollar card daily limits in Nigeria?

Bank by bank. Stanbic IBTC's USD debit card: ATM US$1,000, web US$3,500, POS US$6,500 a day. Fidelity lists US$5,000, with ATM use capped at US$1,000.

Is there a Nigerian pound card for use in the UK?

Some banks issue one. Stanbic IBTC lists a GBP debit card with daily limits of £500 at ATMs, £1,500 online and £3,000 at tills.
