Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Canada

Using a Nigerian dollar card in Canada

Brought a Nigerian USD card to Canada? Where it works, how CAD purchases are converted and charged, and the ATM and spending limits banks state.

The short answer

A Nigerian US dollar debit or prepaid card on Visa or Mastercard generally works in Canada wherever those networks are accepted, but every Canadian purchase is in CAD, so it is converted to US dollars and your bank may add a charge. Fidelity Bank, for example, lists 3% on dollar card transactions in other currencies, and banks set daily limits such as US$1,000 at ATMs abroad. Check your own bank's current fees and limits before relying on the card.

Where the card works

A dollar card issued by a Nigerian bank is usually a Visa or Mastercard debit or prepaid card linked to a domiciliary account. In Canada it can be used at shops, online and at ATMs that accept that network. What changes is the currency: Canadian merchants charge in Canadian dollars, so each payment is converted into US dollars before it reaches your account.

Naira cards are a different matter. Fidelity Bank's FAQ states that individual naira cards are not permitted for international transactions across all channels "as mandated by CBN", and Access Bank's card table shows international use as not available on its naira debit and prepaid cards. Other banks have restored or raised international limits on naira cards: Nairametrics reported in September 2026 that GTBank, Zenith, FirstBank, UBA and Stanbic IBTC had raised dollar spending limits. Rules differ by bank and change, so check your bank's app.

What banks say about limits and fees

Bank and card (as published)Limits statedCharges stated
Access Bank USD debit/travel cardInternational ATM US$1,000 daily; international POS and web "unlimited"Not shown on the cards page
Fidelity Bank dollar cardUS$5,000 (ATM US$1,000, POS/web US$5,000)2% on dollar-to-dollar transactions; 3% dollar to other currencies; plus ATM owner charges; US$10 a year maintenance
Stanbic IBTC USD debit cardDaily ATM US$1,000, web US$3,500, POS US$6,500Not shown on the FAQ page

These figures come from each bank's own page as read in October 2026. They do not rank the banks, and they may have changed; your bank's app or customer service has the current figures for your card.

How a CAD purchase is converted

When you tap a Nigerian USD card in Toronto, the card network converts the Canadian dollar amount to US dollars at its rate, and your bank may then add its own percentage for a transaction in a currency other than US dollars. Fidelity's 3% is one example of how that is published.

Worked example (illustrative figures only)

  • Grocery bill: CAD 200.
  • Example network rate: CAD 1 = US$0.72, so US$144.00.
  • A 3% foreign currency charge adds US$4.32, for a total of US$148.32.
  • If you spend CAD 2,000 a month this way, the 3% alone is about US$43.20 a month.

If a card terminal or ATM offers to charge you in US dollars instead of Canadian dollars, you are being offered a conversion by the terminal operator, at its own rate. Compare it with what your card would charge; in many cases paying in the local currency and letting the card convert is cheaper, but check the figures shown.

ATM withdrawals

Cash from a Canadian ATM comes out in Canadian dollars, converted the same way, and the ATM owner may add its own fee, which the screen should show before you confirm. With a US$1,000 daily international ATM limit at some banks, a large cash need takes several days. Withdrawing cash just to deposit it into a Canadian account is an expensive way to move money; a transfer is usually cheaper and leaves a clearer record.

Keeping the card funded

A dollar card draws on the US dollars in the linked domiciliary account, so it only works while that account has money in it. If you top it up from Canada, you are sending dollars to Nigeria to spend them back in Canada, paying conversion and transfer costs in both directions. That can make sense for a few weeks while you wait for a Canadian account and card, but it adds up quickly. Once you have a Canadian bank account, compare the monthly cost of the dollar card route with simply paying from the Canadian account.

Watch the account statement for each purchase, the conversion charge and any ATM fee. If a charge looks wrong, raise it with the Nigerian bank promptly; card disputes usually have time limits set by the bank and the card network.

Practical points before you rely on it

  1. Confirm the card is enabled for international use and note the expiry date; replacing a Nigerian card from Canada can take time.
  2. Check your bank's published fees for transactions in currencies other than US dollars.
  3. Keep the Nigerian phone number or email linked to the account active, so you receive alerts and one-time codes abroad.
  4. Save the bank's international customer service number and know how to block the card from the app.
  5. Treat it as a bridge for your first weeks, not a long-term way to pay Canadian bills.

For a longer-term setup, see our guide to US dollar accounts at Canadian banks and keeping a Nigerian account active from Canada. The Nigeria library's Fidelity Bank dollar card guide covers one bank's card in more detail.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Personal Account holds US dollars, naira, pounds and euros with local account details, so you can receive and hold dollars and swap them when you choose, with the rate and fee shown before you approve. Security uses an authenticator app rather than SMS codes and a transaction PIN. See the multicurrency account and security.

Questions people ask

Does a Nigerian dollar card work in Canada?

A Visa or Mastercard USD card from a Nigerian bank generally works where those networks are accepted. Canadian purchases are converted from CAD to USD, and your bank may add a charge.

Can I use my Nigerian naira card in Canada?

It depends on the bank. Some state naira cards cannot be used internationally; others have raised international limits in 2026. Check your bank's app for your card.

How much can I withdraw from a Canadian ATM with a Nigerian dollar card?

Banks set their own limits; Access Bank, Fidelity and Stanbic IBTC each list US$1,000 a day for international ATM use on their USD cards. The ATM owner may add a fee.

Should I pay in USD or CAD when the terminal asks?

Paying in CAD lets your card convert at its rate; choosing USD means the terminal operator converts. Compare the amounts shown before you choose.
