Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Nigerian client wants to pay in crypto: SARS and SA rules

How SARS treats crypto received as payment for freelance services, the barter rule, records to keep and what to check on the Nigerian side.

The short answer

SARS says normal income tax rules apply to crypto, and services paid for in crypto are a barter transaction, so the rand value of the crypto when you receive it is freelance income. Selling or swapping it later is a separate event that may produce a gain or loss. Keep the invoice, wallet transaction IDs and the rand value at each step.

Some Nigerian clients prefer to pay in crypto, often stablecoins such as USDT, because it is quick for them and avoids bank documentation for foreign payments. For a freelancer in South Africa it can be convenient too. But being paid in crypto does not change whether the income is taxable, and it adds record-keeping work most freelancers underestimate. Here is what SARS says and what to check before you accept.

What SARS says about crypto

SARS's Crypto Assets & Tax page, updated 20 March 2026, says normal income tax rules apply to crypto assets and taxpayers must declare crypto gains or losses as part of taxable income. It defines a crypto asset (earlier the term was cryptocurrency) as a digital representation of value not issued by a central bank. For freelancers, the key line is that goods or services exchanged for crypto are a barter transaction, and the normal barter rules apply.

  • Your fee is income when received or accrued, as it would be in rand or naira.
  • Value: the barter rules mean you are taxed on the value of what you received. SARS's page does not set out a valuation method, so use a consistent, documented market rate at the time of receipt.
  • Later disposal: when you sell, swap or spend the crypto, there is a second event. Whether a gain is revenue or capital is tested under existing case law, according to SARS.
  • Expenses: deductible if incurred in the production of income, under the normal rules.
  • Late declaration: SARS warns that late or missed declarations could result in interest and penalties.

Worked example (illustrative figures only)

You finish a project for a Lagos start-up and accept 1,000 USDT. On the day you receive it, its value is R18,000 at the rate on the exchange you use. You declare R18,000 of freelance income. Three months later you sell the 1,000 USDT for R17,500. The R500 difference is a separate loss arising on disposal; whether it is revenue or capital depends on your circumstances, so record it and ask a practitioner.

Records SARS will expect

The SARS page does not list specific records for crypto, so keep enough to prove the value and date of every step.

  1. The invoice, stating the fee in rand, dollars or naira and that it was settled in crypto.
  2. The wallet address you received to and the transaction ID (hash) for each payment.
  3. The rand value at the time of receipt and its source, such as a screenshot or export from your exchange.
  4. Exchange statements showing any later sale or swap, with rand values.
  5. Network and exchange fees paid.

The Nigerian side

Your client's ability to pay you in crypto depends on Nigerian rules for the platforms it uses. Nigeria's Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) regulates virtual asset service providers and runs an Accelerated Regulatory Incubation Programme (ARIP) through which such providers seek approval; its page describes an approval-in-principle that is conditional before full registration. Check whether the platform your client uses appears on SEC lists before you rely on it. Tax-wise, the Nigerian position on crypto paid for services is not something we could confirm from a primary source for this article.

Exchange control and your bank

When you sell crypto for rand through a South African exchange and withdraw to your bank, the bank sees a local payment from the exchange. The SARB's public FAQ that we read does not address crypto, so if you plan to move crypto across borders or hold large amounts offshore, ask your bank and exchange what applies before you do.

Should you accept it?

  • Accept if: the amount is fixed in fiat on the invoice, the token is a widely traded stablecoin, and you can document everything.
  • Think twice if: the client wants to pay in a volatile token, insists on no invoice, or uses an unknown platform.
  • Alternative: a naira transfer to a Nigerian account in your name avoids most of these steps and leaves a bank record.

A note on stablecoin risk

A stablecoin aims to hold its value against a currency such as the dollar, but it is issued by a private company, not a central bank, and its value can move. Convert what you need for tax and expenses promptly rather than holding a whole year's fees in tokens, and remember that the rand value you declared at receipt does not fall if the token later loses value before you sell.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Business Account gives clients a naira or dollar alternative with local account details, and invoicing records the fee in fiat. Read our guide on declaring platform income to SARS for the general reporting steps.

Questions people ask

Is crypto received for freelance work taxable in South Africa?

Yes. SARS says normal income tax rules apply and services exchanged for crypto are a barter transaction.

What value do I declare for crypto I was paid?

The value of what you received at the time. SARS's page does not specify a method, so use a consistent market rate and keep evidence.

Do I pay tax again when I sell the crypto?

Selling or swapping is a separate event. A gain or loss may arise, treated as revenue or capital depending on the facts.

What records should I keep for crypto payments?

The invoice, wallet address, transaction ID, rand value and source at receipt, and exchange statements for later disposals.
