Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Nigerian client wants your tax ID for its WHT records

Why a Nigerian company asks a foreign freelancer for a Tax ID, what it does with it, the double WHT rate without one, and how to respond.

The short answer

A Nigerian company asks for your tax ID because it must deduct withholding tax from your fee, remit it, and issue a receipt showing the recipient's name, address and Tax ID; under the 2024 Withholding Regulations, a payee with no Tax ID suffers WHT at double the normal rate on non-passive income. Individuals with a NIN can retrieve a 13-digit Nigerian Tax ID online at taxid.nrs.gov.ng; a non-resident supplying taxable services to Nigeria is required by section 6 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025 to register for one.

Why the client is asking

A designer in Berlin, a developer in Calgary or a consultant in Leeds sends a first invoice to a Nigerian company and gets back a vendor form asking for a "TIN" or "Tax ID". It can feel like bureaucracy aimed at a local supplier. It is in fact the client protecting itself, and you, under Nigeria's withholding tax rules.

Companies, government bodies and other institutions are deductors under the Deduction of Tax at Source (Withholding) Regulations 2024. A Danol Partners overview of the Regulations on Mondaq (16 October 2024) sets out what follows:

  • The client deducts WHT from your fee and remits it to the tax authority.
  • It must issue a receipt showing your name, address and Tax ID, the nature of the payment, the gross amount, the amount deducted and the month.
  • Where the recipient has no Tax ID, WHT on non-passive income is deducted at double the normal rate.

So the Tax ID decides both the rate you suffer and whether the receipt you get is complete enough to use.

What it costs you not to have one

PwC's highlights of the 2024 Regulations give the rate on professional and consultancy fees as 5% for residents and 10% for non-residents. Doubling applies to that rate.

Worked example

Example only. A non-resident consultant invoices a Nigerian company ₦2,000,000 for professional services. With a Tax ID, WHT at 10% is ₦200,000 and ₦1,800,000 is paid. Without one, the double rate of 20% means ₦400,000 is deducted and ₦1,600,000 is paid. The ₦200,000 difference is a real cost, and you may not be able to claim all of it as a foreign tax credit at home.

Getting a Nigerian Tax ID

Nigeria moved to a single Tax ID from 1 January 2026. Two published routes matter for diaspora freelancers:

Your situationRoute
You have a Nigerian NINRetrieve your 13-digit Tax ID at taxid.nrs.gov.ng (or taxid.jrb.gov.ng): Individual tab, enter your 11-digit NIN, then first name, last name and date of birth exactly as held by NIMC (FCT-IRS notice, 29 Dec 2025)
You trade through a Nigerian-registered companyCorporate tab, using the CAC registration number
You have no NIN and no Nigerian companyRegister with the Nigeria Revenue Service; new taxpayers register at selfservice.nrs.gov.ng, according to a Templars client alert (13 May 2026) on the Rev360 portal

Section 6 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025 requires a non-resident person supplying taxable goods or services to Nigeria to register for a Tax ID, though a person with only passive income may not need to. Section 7(5) allows a person only one Tax ID, so if you have an old TIN or already have a NIN-linked ID, use that rather than applying again. A Premium Times explainer (12 November 2025) on the Act describes the NIN as serving as the Tax ID for individuals and says registration is free.

More on the process from abroad is in our guide to the Nigerian Tax ID from abroad.

What else the client needs for its records

  1. Your full legal name and address, matching the invoice.
  2. Your Tax ID, or a written note that you are applying for one.
  3. A proper invoice; see what Nigerian companies need on a foreign freelancer's invoice.
  4. Bank details for payment.
  5. Any other vendor onboarding documents it asks for; see vendor onboarding documents.

In return, ask for the WHT receipt each time WHT is deducted. That receipt is your evidence of Nigerian tax paid, and our guide on getting a WHT credit note explains how to chase it. Whether you can claim credit for it in your country of residence depends on that country's rules and any treaty. This is information, not tax advice.

If the client has already deducted at the double rate

Send your Tax ID as soon as you have it and ask whether the client can apply the normal rate to future invoices. Whether an excess already deducted and remitted can be refunded or adjusted is a matter between the client and the tax authority; ask the client's finance team, and keep the WHT receipt for the amount actually deducted either way.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme account opened from abroad gives you naira account details in your name for the client to pay, alongside pounds, dollars and euros. Keeping Nigerian client payments in one place makes it easier to match each payment to its invoice and WHT receipt, and a verifiable statement through VerifyDoc.ai (receipts) helps when an accountant at home asks for proof of what was received.

Questions people ask

Why does a Nigerian company need my Tax ID?

To deduct withholding tax correctly and issue a receipt that shows your Tax ID. Without one, the 2024 Regulations require WHT at double the normal rate on non-passive income.

Can a foreigner get a Nigerian Tax ID?

Yes. Section 6 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025 requires a non-resident supplying taxable services to Nigeria to register. Without a NIN, registration is through the Nigeria Revenue Service's self-service portal.

How do I find my Nigerian Tax ID with my NIN?

Go to taxid.nrs.gov.ng, choose Individual, enter your 11-digit NIN and your names and date of birth exactly as NIMC holds them. The 13-digit Tax ID is then shown.

Is my old Nigerian TIN still valid?

Sources differ: the FCT-IRS notice describes the new Tax ID as replacing earlier TINs, while a Premium Times explainer says existing TINs stay valid. Use the new Tax ID where you can.
