Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United Kingdom

Nigerian citizenship by registration for a British spouse

Who can register as Nigerian by marriage under section 26, why foreign husbands are left out, and how section 28 affects British citizenship.

The short answer

Section 26 of Nigeria's 1999 Constitution lets a woman who is or has been married to a Nigerian citizen register as a citizen, if she is of good character, intends to live in Nigeria and takes the Oath of Allegiance. A British husband is not covered by that limb and would look at naturalisation. Applications go through the Ministry of Interior's e-Citibiz portal. A wife who is British by birth can keep British citizenship under section 28.

Many Nigerians in the UK assume their British husband or wife can become Nigerian by marriage. The Constitution allows this for some spouses but not others, and the dual-nationality rule that follows can matter more than the application itself. Here is what the law says, who it covers and how the application works.

What section 26 says

Section 26 of the 1999 Constitution lets the President register certain people as citizens if satisfied that they:

  1. are of good character,
  2. have shown a clear intention of their desire to be domiciled in Nigeria, and
  3. have taken the Oath of Allegiance in the Seventh Schedule.

Section 26(2) says it applies to:

  • "any woman who is or has been married to a citizen of Nigeria", and
  • "every person of full age and capacity born outside Nigeria any of whose grandparents is a citizen of Nigeria".

Which British spouses this covers

Your situationSection 26 marriage route?
Nigerian husband, British wifeYes; the wording covers a woman married to a Nigerian citizen
Nigerian wife, British husbandNo; section 26(2)(a) refers only to a woman. He would look at naturalisation under section 27
British spouse with a Nigerian grandparentPossibly, under the grandparent limb, regardless of sex
Divorced or widowed wifeThe words "is or has been married" include her

Until the Constitution is amended, the text above is the law; check for any amendment before you apply.

Dual citizenship: the section 28 point

Section 28(2) says registration of a person who is a citizen of another country is conditional on renouncing that other citizenship within five months, if they are not a citizen by birth of that other country. Section 28(1) has the same carve-out for keeping a second nationality. In plain terms:

  • A wife who is British by birth can register as Nigerian and keep British citizenship.
  • A wife who became British by naturalisation or registration would be expected to renounce British citizenship within five months of Nigerian registration, or lose the Nigerian citizenship.
  • On the UK side, GOV.UK says the UK allows dual citizenship, but a renunciation forced by another country's law is a separate decision with lasting effects.

This is information, not legal advice. If you are a naturalised British citizen, take advice before applying. See also does Nigeria allow dual citizenship.

How the application works

Applications go to the Federal Ministry of Interior through its e-Citibiz portal. Its requirements page for citizenship by registration through marriage lists uploads of:

  • Passport photograph and birth certificate
  • Evidence of means of livelihood
  • Marriage certificate, and particulars of any previous marriages
  • Residence permit
  • The first five pages of the international passport, including the data page
  • A court judgment (the page does not explain which)
  • Letters from guarantors, their downloaded forms and their ID
  • A signed application letter to the Permanent Secretary
  • If the husband has died: a consent letter from him, children or relatives, and evidence of his or his relatives' Nigerian citizenship

The page gives no fees, processing time or residence period. Two items point to the applicant already living in Nigeria: the residence permit, and the constitutional test of intending to be domiciled there. For a British wife in the UK, the usual sequence is to move first, often on the spouse of a Nigerian citizen visa, obtain residence, then apply.

The grandparent route, briefly

Section 26(2)(b) covers "every person of full age and capacity born outside Nigeria any of whose grandparents is a citizen of Nigeria". That limb is not limited to women, so a British husband with a Nigerian grandparent could use it, subject to the same three conditions in section 26(1). Note that a person with a Nigerian parent does not need either route: section 25 makes a child born abroad to a Nigerian parent a citizen by birth.

Registration or a visa: which do you need?

Citizenship is a long-term step. For a British spouse who simply wants to live in Nigeria with you, a residence route may be all that is needed for years, and does not raise the section 28 question. Registration matters most where the spouse wants Nigerian citizenship itself, such as a Nigerian passport. Weigh what you gain against the renunciation risk if the spouse is not British by birth.

Before you apply

  1. Confirm which limb of section 26 applies to you.
  2. Check your British citizenship: by birth, or acquired later? This decides the section 28 outcome.
  3. Arrange residence in Nigeria and a residence permit.
  4. Get the marriage certificate in a form Nigerian authorities accept, and line up guarantors.
  5. Apply on e-Citibiz and keep copies of every upload.

Where Pryme fits

Settling in Nigeria as a couple usually means paying rent, school fees and bills in naira while income may still arrive in pounds. A Pryme account keeps both, and Swap converts only when you approve the rate shown.

Questions people ask

Can my British wife become a Nigerian citizen?

Yes, section 26(2)(a) of the Constitution covers any woman who is or has been married to a Nigerian citizen, subject to good character, intention to live in Nigeria and the Oath of Allegiance.

Can a British husband of a Nigerian woman register as Nigerian?

Not through the marriage limb of section 26, which refers only to a woman. He would need to look at naturalisation under section 27, unless he has a Nigerian grandparent.

Will my wife lose her British citizenship if she registers as Nigerian?

Section 28 requires renunciation within five months only if she is not a citizen by birth of the other country. A wife British by birth is not caught.

Where do I apply for Nigerian citizenship by registration?

Through the Federal Ministry of Interior's e-Citibiz portal. Its requirements include a residence permit, marriage certificate, guarantors and an application letter to the Permanent Secretary.
