Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Nigerian certificate of origin for a child born in Canada

Why a Canada-born child may need a Nigerian state of origin certificate, who issues it, and how parents in Canada apply through the state or LGA.

The short answer

A certificate of origin (state or local government identification) is issued by your Nigerian state or local government, not by a federal office or the High Commission, and a child born in Canada takes the parent's state and LGA of origin. Parents usually need it for a child's Nigerian passport, school or scholarship forms later; some states now take applications online, others require a relative to apply at the local government secretariat.

Many Nigerian parents in Canada only hear about the certificate of origin when a form asks for it. The child was born in Toronto or Calgary, holds a Canadian birth certificate, and may never have set foot in the home town. Yet Nigerian processes still ask which state and local government area the child is from. This article explains what the certificate is, when it matters, and the routes that work from abroad.

What the certificate is and who issues it

A certificate of origin, often called a state of origin certificate or LGA identification letter, confirms that a person is an indigene of a particular local government area and state. It is issued at state or local government level, so the process, the fee and the documents differ from state to state. There is no single national form and the Nigeria High Commission in Ottawa does not issue it.

For a child born outside Nigeria, origin is taken from a Nigerian parent. States differ on whether they use the father's or the mother's origin, so check the issuing state's rules. The child's Canadian birthplace does not change the state of origin.

Why a Canada-born child may need one

  • Nigerian passport. The Nigeria Immigration Service passports page (checked October 2026) lists an LGA or state of origin identification letter, or a National ID card, among the documents for a fresh adult passport, and a state of origin certificate among the uploads for correcting errors. For minors, the same page lists evidence of the parents' Nigerian citizenship, a consent letter and photographs; ask the mission whether it also wants the child's own origin letter.
  • Later education. Federal and state scholarship schemes, some admission processes and quota-based places ask for proof of state of origin.
  • Records consistency. Having the state and LGA written down once, correctly, avoids different forms recording different towns.

If the child is getting a first Nigerian passport, our guide to documents for a Canada-born child's first Nigerian passport sets out the full list, and registering a Canada-born child as Nigerian covers citizenship records.

How to apply from Canada

Online portals

Some states have moved certificates online. Voice of Nigeria reported that Osun State's electronic portal (stateoforigin.osunstate.gov.ng) digitises state and local government certificates, verifies details before download, lets holders convert old certificates by upload, and "could accept applications from anywhere in the world". The article gives no fees or document list, so check the portal itself. Ebonyi State's website lists the certificate under Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters with an online form, applied for through the local government; it too gives no fee or timeline.

Through a relative at home

Where a state has no portal, a parent or relative usually applies at the local government secretariat of the LGA of origin. Expect to be asked for some or all of the following, and confirm the list with the LGA before sending anything:

  • the child's birth certificate (the Canadian one, possibly with a certified copy);
  • the parent's own certificate of origin or LGA letter, and the parent's Nigerian passport data page or NIN slip;
  • passport photographs of the child;
  • a letter or attestation from a traditional ruler, community head or ward leader confirming the family;
  • a letter authorising the relative to apply on the parent's behalf, sometimes with a sworn declaration.

What to check first

  1. Decide which parent's origin the child will take and check that parent's own certificate is in order.
  2. Look for an official portal on your state government's website before engaging an agent.
  3. Ask the LGA or portal which version of the child's birth certificate it accepts and whether it must be certified.
  4. Make sure names and dates match the child's Canadian birth certificate and any Nigerian passport application exactly.
  5. Keep a scan of the issued certificate; you will need it again.

Common problems parents run into

The most frequent snag is a mismatch. A parent's own records may show one LGA while the family has since been associated with another after a boundary change or a move between towns. Settle which LGA the parent's existing certificate and passport show, and use that for the child, so the two records support each other. A second snag is spelling: Canadian birth registrations sometimes drop a middle name or record a Yoruba, Igbo or Hausa name with different spelling from the one the family uses at home. The certificate should follow the Canadian birth certificate exactly, because that is the document every later Nigerian office will compare it with.

A third is the agent problem. Unofficial agents offer to "process" certificates from abroad for a fee. Where your state has an official portal or the LGA will deal with a named relative, use that, and be wary of any certificate that arrives without a traceable official receipt or reference number.

Where Pryme fits

If a relative in Nigeria is handling the application, Pryme lets you send naira from Canada to cover fees and travel to the secretariat, with the rate and fee shown before you approve. Our Personal Assistant can keep a reminder of the steps, and nothing moves without your approval.

Questions people ask

Can a child born in Canada get a Nigerian state of origin certificate?

Yes. Origin follows the Nigerian parent's state and LGA, not the place of birth. Apply to that state or local government.

Does the Nigeria High Commission in Ottawa issue certificates of origin?

No. They are issued by state and local governments in Nigeria. Some states have online portals; others need a relative to apply at the LGA.

Is a certificate of origin needed for a child's Nigerian passport?

The NIS page lists an LGA or state of origin letter for adult applications and for corrections. For minors, check the mission's current list before applying.

How much does a certificate of origin cost?

It depends on the state and LGA. We could not confirm any current fee; ask the issuing office and keep the official receipt.
