Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Importing Nigerian beer and spirits: excise basics

How alcohol duty, licences, warehouse rules and labelling apply when you import Nigerian stout, lager, gin or schnapps for sale in the UK or US.

The short answer

Nigerian beer and spirits imported for sale pay excise on top of any customs duty and VAT. In the UK, alcohol duty is charged per litre of pure alcohol, for example £22.58 for beer of 3.5% to 8.4% and £33.99 for spirits above 22%, as at October 2026; the importer also needs the right licences to sell. In the US, the importer needs a free federal Basic Importer's Permit and a label approval (COLA) for each product, and state rules apply.

Nigerian stouts, lagers, gins and bitters have a loyal following abroad. Unlike groceries, alcohol is an excise good almost everywhere: it carries its own duty, licensing and record keeping, and goods can be seized if they are not accounted for. This page explains the basics in the UK and US. It is general information; take advice from a customs broker or excise specialist before your first shipment.

United Kingdom: how alcohol duty is worked out

UK alcohol duty is charged on the volume of pure alcohol, at rates that depend on the type of drink and its strength. HMRC's rates page (updated 1 February 2026) gives these non-draught rates per litre of pure alcohol:

Product and strength (ABV)Rate per litre of pure alcohol
Any product, 0% to 1.2%£0
Any product, 1.3% to 3.4%£9.96
Beer, 3.5% to 8.4%£22.58
Wine, spirits and other fermented products, 3.5% to 8.4%£26.61
Any product, 8.5% to 22%£30.62
Any product, above 22%£33.99

Worked example (illustration only)

Example 1: a 330 ml bottle of stout at 7.5% contains 0.33 x 0.075 = 0.02475 litres of pure alcohol. At £22.58 the duty is about £0.56 a bottle, or £13.41 for a case of 24.

Example 2: a 70 cl bottle of gin at 40% contains 0.7 x 0.4 = 0.28 litres of pure alcohol. At £33.99 the duty is £9.52 a bottle. Customs duty, if any, and import VAT come on top.

United Kingdom: warehouses, stamps and licences

  • Paying the duty: HMRC's guidance on receiving, storing and moving excise goods explains that imported alcohol can be held in an approved excise warehouse with duty suspended, and that duty is paid when the goods leave the warehouse, either immediately or through a deferment account authorised by HMRC.
  • No more duty stamps: HMRC ended the alcohol duty stamps scheme on 1 May 2025, so imported spirits no longer need stamps. The Alcohol Wholesaler Registration Scheme (AWRS) and due diligence obligations continue, and buying from an unregistered wholesaler can lead to sanctions.
  • Selling: GOV.UK's alcohol licensing guidance says permanent retail sales need a premises licence, with a designated premises supervisor holding a personal licence. Personal licence holders must be 18 or over and usually hold an accredited qualification.
  • Baggage: goods for sale carried in luggage count as commercial. HMRC says excise goods such as alcohol need a full customs declaration, not the simplified online route.

United States: federal and state rules

TTB's guidance on importing bottled alcohol (G 2015-3, updated 29 September 2026) sets the federal steps:

  1. A Federal Basic Importer's Permit (TTB F 5100.24), applied for through Permits Online, with no fee. The importer needs a US business office that is staffed, or must work through a licensed importer.
  2. Registration as an alcohol dealer.
  3. A Certificate of Label Approval (COLA) for each label, held before the goods are imported.
  4. Certificates of age or origin for some wines and spirits.
  5. FDA food facility registration and prior notice, which also apply to alcohol.
  6. Federal excise tax and customs duties, collected by CBP, for which the importer is liable.

Each state then sets its own rules on who may import, distribute and sell alcohol, so check the state alcohol control board before you sign a supplier.

Canada

In Ontario, beverage alcohol is sold through the LCBO system, which runs a supplier site with product calls, submissions and an agent route for suppliers. Other provinces have their own boards. The site explains the roles of suppliers and their agents.

Building a landed cost

Before agreeing a price with a Nigerian brewer or distiller, add up every cost that sits between the brewery gate and your shelf:

  • The supplier's price and the Incoterm, so you know whether freight and insurance are included.
  • Freight, insurance and Nigerian port and export charges.
  • Alcohol duty or federal excise tax, worked out per litre of pure alcohol in the UK.
  • Customs duty, if the drink's code carries any, and import VAT or sales taxes.
  • Customs broker, bonded warehouse and haulage charges.
  • Licence costs and, in the US, state distributor margins.

Duty on a strong spirit can be larger than the price of the bottle itself, so a small change in strength or bottle size changes the business case.

On the Nigerian side

The exporter still follows the Nigerian export procedure: NEPC registration, Form NXP and customs clearance, plus NAFDAC export documents for registered products. See the export steps for a container and, for non-alcoholic malt, importing Nigerian malt and soft drinks.

Where Pryme fits

Excise is due on strict dates, separately from the supplier payment. A Pryme Business Account holds GBP, USD, EUR and NGN; Swap shows the rate and the fee before you approve. The Compliance agent can keep licence and duty records ready for review.

Questions people ask

How is UK alcohol duty calculated on imported beer?

On the litres of pure alcohol. Beer between 3.5% and 8.4% ABV paid £22.58 per litre of pure alcohol on HMRC's rates page as at October 2026, so a 330 ml stout at 7.5% pays about 56p.

Do imported spirits still need UK duty stamps?

No. HMRC ended the duty stamps scheme on 1 May 2025. AWRS and due diligence obligations still apply.

Do I need a licence to import alcohol into the US?

Yes. TTB requires a Federal Basic Importer's Permit, which has no fee, plus a COLA for each label. State rules apply on top.

Can I bring Nigerian gin in my luggage to sell?

Goods for sale are commercial, and HMRC says excise goods need a full customs declaration. Duty and VAT are payable.
