Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Will a landlord abroad accept a Nigerian bank statement?

Some landlords will read a Nigerian statement; most referencing checks will not. How referencing works, what helps, and when you need a guarantor.

The short answer

Sometimes. A private landlord who reviews applications by hand may accept a Nigerian bank statement as evidence of savings, especially with a job offer and an explanation in local currency. Letting agents and referencing companies usually look for local income, a local credit file and local references, so a Nigerian statement alone rarely passes. The usual fixes are a guarantor, a rent guarantee scheme or service, a larger deposit within legal limits, or rent paid in advance with proper protections.

How tenant referencing works

When you apply through an agent, a referencing check usually looks at three things: identity and right to rent, affordability, and history. Affordability is normally judged against income in the new country, often as a multiple of the monthly rent. History means a credit check with local bureaus and references from previous landlords or employers. A newcomer may have none of these yet. A Nigerian statement does not fit the automated part of the check, which is why it is often ignored rather than rejected.

In England, landlords must also check every adult's right to rent before the tenancy. GOV.UK says this is done with a share code or original documents, must be done within 28 days before the tenancy starts for people with time-limited permission, and that landlords can be fined up to £20,000 per tenant for failing to check. That check is separate from money: a perfect statement does not replace it.

When a Nigerian statement helps

  • A private landlord reviewing applications personally.
  • Showing savings that cover several months of rent, rather than income.
  • Alongside a job offer or contract with your new salary.
  • With a short cover note converting key balances into local currency at a stated date and explaining regular credits, such as salary.

Make it easy to read. Highlight your name, account number, the period and closing balance. Avoid long gaps. If a landlord asks for a translation or certified copy, GOV.UK's guidance on certifying a document describes the usual form; Nigerian statements are normally in English already.

Questions a landlord may ask, and good answers

  • Is this money available to you here? Explain how and when you will move it, and show a local account if you have one.
  • Is it your money? The statement should be in your own name; a parent's statement is a guarantor question, not yours.
  • What will you earn here? A signed contract or offer letter answers this better than any statement.
  • Can you pay if your job ends? Savings covering several months of rent are the strongest answer.

The usual alternatives

OptionHow it worksPoints to check
UK guarantorSomeone, usually in the UK, agrees to pay if you do notShelter says agents check the guarantor's income and credit and may require a homeowner
Rent guarantee schemeCouncils or charities sometimes act as guarantorEligibility rules; not everywhere
Paid guarantor companyA business acts as guarantor for a feeShelter says a landlord cannot force you to use a particular company
Rent in advanceYou pay several months up frontSee the protections article before agreeing
Larger depositExtra security for the landlordIn England, capped at five weeks' rent where annual rent is under £50,000

Rules differ by country. In England, the Tenant Fees Act caps the tenancy deposit at five weeks' rent where annual rent is under £50,000 and six weeks where it is £50,000 to £100,000, and a holding deposit at one week. Landlords can require a guarantor. In New York City, the FARE Act stops landlords' agents charging tenants broker fees, though landlords may still charge for background and credit checks. Check the official rules where you are renting. For more, see renting with no local guarantor and paying rent upfront: the protections.

Worked example: building an application

Example only. Chioma is moving to Leeds for a job paying £2,800 a month after tax. The flat is £950 a month. The agent's referencing cannot see a UK credit file. She offers: her signed employment contract; three months of Nigerian bank statements showing salary and a savings balance; a cover note converting the savings to pounds at the rate on a stated date; her right-to-rent share code; and a UK-based cousin as guarantor. The landlord accepts with the guarantor, and the deposit stays within the five-week cap: £950 × 12 ÷ 52 × 5 = about £1,096.

What to check first

  1. Ask the agent which referencing company it uses and what it accepts from newcomers.
  2. Ask whether a guarantor, guarantor service or rent in advance is acceptable.
  3. Prepare your right-to-rent proof (in England) separately.
  4. Get a recent statement and a cover note ready before viewings.
  5. Never pay a holding deposit before seeing the property and checking the landlord; see fake landlord scams.

Where Pryme fits

A landlord reviewing by hand wants to trust the document. A Pryme account can generate a verifiable statement through our partner VerifyDoc.ai, which the landlord can check is genuine and unaltered; whether to accept it is their decision. See receipts and statements. For background on why your Nigerian credit file does not show here, see does Nigerian credit history count abroad.

Questions people ask

Can I rent in the UK with a Nigerian bank statement?

Some private landlords accept one as evidence of savings, usually with a job offer. Agents' referencing checks generally look for UK income and credit history, so a guarantor is often needed.

What if I have no UK guarantor?

Options include council or charity rent guarantee schemes, paid guarantor companies, or rent in advance with proper protections. Shelter says a landlord cannot force you to use a particular guarantor company.

How much deposit can a landlord in England ask for?

Under the Tenant Fees Act, five weeks' rent where annual rent is under £50,000, six weeks from £50,000 to £100,000, and a holding deposit of up to one week.

Do I need a translation of my Nigerian bank statement?

Usually not, as Nigerian statements are normally in English. Add a cover note converting key balances into local currency.
