Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Australia

Nigerian bank card limits on spending in Australia

Why your naira card is declined in Australia: the international spend caps banks set, how they changed in 2026 and what to check before you tap.

The short answer

Each Nigerian bank sets its own cap on what a naira card can spend abroad, and the caps have moved several times in 2026. Nairametrics reported on 7 September 2026 that GTBank allowed up to $40,000 a quarter, FirstBank $10,000 a quarter and Zenith $50,000 a year, while Stanbic IBTC's own FAQ shows $100 a month on its naira debit card and Fidelity says its individual naira cards cannot be used abroad at all. Check your bank's app for the current limit before you travel.

A naira card that worked in Lagos on Friday can be declined at a Woolworths self-checkout or on a Myki or Opal top-up on Monday. Usually nothing is wrong with the card. The payment has hit a limit the bank set on international use, a channel that is switched off, or a card type that cannot be used outside Nigeria. Knowing which of the three it is saves a lot of calls to a Lagos contact centre from an Australian time zone.

Why naira cards have international limits

A purchase in Australia is billed in Australian dollars, but your bank settles it with the card network in foreign currency and debits your account in naira. The bank has to find that foreign currency. When dollars were scarce in Nigeria, banks cut naira card spending abroad sharply; as supply improved they raised the caps again. That is why limits are quoted in US dollars even when you are spending AUD, and why they change without much notice.

What banks' limits look like (as at Aug to Sept 2026)

FidelityBank FAQ: individual naira cards not permitted for international transactionsFidelity FAQ

Several banks reserve the higher limits for certain card tiers or "eligible customers". UBA was reported by Legit.ng in August 2026 to price naira card spending abroad at a rate it revises daily, without a published monthly cap. Our Nigeria library has bank-by-bank pages, for example GTBank's naira Mastercard abroad.

Other reasons a card is declined in Australia

  • International use is switched off. Many apps have a card-control screen where you enable international, web or ATM channels separately.
  • The card type cannot be used abroad. Verve cards work on Verve-enabled channels; FirstBank describes its naira Mastercard, not Verve, as the card for worldwide ATM, POS and web use.
  • The daily naira limit is reached before the dollar cap. Fidelity's FAQ, for example, lists naira card POS and web limits per day as well as international rules.
  • The transaction looks unusual. A first purchase from an Australian merchant can trigger a fraud check; keep the bank's alerts on.
  • Tap-and-go or recurring payments. Some merchants pre-authorise more than the bill, which can push you over a tight cap.

The exchange rate you actually pay

The cap is only half the cost question. The bank converts your spend at its own rate, which can sit well away from the rate you see quoted on news sites. At an Australian terminal you may also be offered to pay "in your home currency": that is dynamic currency conversion, where the merchant's provider sets the rate. Choosing to pay in AUD leaves the conversion to your bank. Check one statement after your first purchase and work out the effective rate: naira debited divided by AUD spent.

What to check before you rely on a naira card

  1. Your card type and whether your bank allows it abroad at all.
  2. The current international limit in the app, and whether it is monthly, quarterly or yearly.
  3. That international and web channels are enabled.
  4. The rate on your first statement line.
  5. A second way to pay that does not depend on Nigerian FX supply, such as an Australian debit card.

For everyday spending, an Australian account is the obvious base once you have one; see opening a bank account as a new arrival. Our companion guide covers using naira cards for payments in Australia in more detail.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Personal Account holds naira, US dollars, pounds and euros side by side (multicurrency). Money stays in the currency it arrived in, and Swap converts only when you choose: the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve. Naira deposits are held by a licensed Nigerian microfinance bank, regulated by the CBN and insured by the NDIC up to the applicable limit, and outside Nigeria Pryme's activities are carried out through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

Why is my Nigerian card declined in Australia?

Usually an international spending cap, a disabled international channel or a card type the bank does not allow abroad. Check card controls in your app, then call the bank.

What is the GTBank naira card limit abroad?

Nairametrics reported $40,000 a quarter on 7 September 2026, up from $6,000 in May. Limits change, so check the GTBank app.

Can I use a Verve card in Australia?

Verve cards work on Verve-enabled channels. Banks generally describe their naira Mastercard or Visa as the card for international use.

Should I pay in naira or AUD at an Australian terminal?

Paying in AUD leaves the conversion to your bank. Paying in your home currency lets the merchant's provider set the rate, which you cannot check in advance.
