Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Registering a Nigerian community association as a non-profit

Federal or provincial? How a Nigerian community association incorporates as a not-for-profit in Canada, what it costs and what it files each year.

The short answer

A Nigerian community association can incorporate federally under the Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act for $200 online, or provincially; in Ontario a not-for-profit incorporation costs $155. A federal not-for-profit must also register in each province where it operates and file an annual return ($12). Incorporating does not make the group a charity: charitable registration with the CRA is a separate application.

Why incorporate at all

Many Nigerian associations in Canada, from town unions and state associations to alumni and church-linked groups, run for years as informal clubs. That works until the group wants to sign a hall lease, open a bank account in its own name, apply for a city grant or hold money for members. An unincorporated association has no separate legal personality, so the people who sign contracts can carry the risk personally. Incorporating as a not-for-profit corporation gives the association its own legal identity, a board and by-laws.

A not-for-profit corporation can still charge dues, sell tickets for an Independence Day gala and keep a surplus; what it cannot do is distribute profit to members.

Federal or provincial: the choice

Federal (Corporations Canada)Ontario (Ontario Business Registry)
LawCanada Not-for-profit Corporations ActOntario's not-for-profit legislation
Online incorporation fee$200 (express service $100 extra)$155
Service standard1 business day (express 4 hours)5 business days
Annual return$12, online, every yearFiled through the registry
Operating in other provincesMust also register in each province or territory where it operatesExtra-provincial registration needed elsewhere

Figures are from Corporations Canada's fee page (modified May 2025) and Ontario's fee page (updated September 2026). Corporations Canada states that federally incorporated not-for-profits must also be registered in a province or territory, so a group that only meets in Toronto or Brampton gains little from the federal route except the name protection and the national label. A national body with chapters in Calgary, Winnipeg and Halifax is the classic case for federal incorporation.

Outside Ontario, check your own province's registry: British Columbia, Alberta and Quebec run their own systems for societies and not-for-profits.

Steps to incorporate

  1. Agree a name. Avoid names that suggest a government body; for an online federal incorporation with a word name, Corporations Canada says the name search is now part of the process.
  2. Agree the purposes in plain terms, for example "to promote Igbo culture and support members and their families in the Greater Toronto Area".
  3. Choose the first directors and confirm each is willing to serve.
  4. Draft the by-laws: membership classes, dues, how directors are elected, meetings, quorum, signing authority and how the group is wound up.
  5. File the articles online and pay the fee.
  6. After incorporation, hold the first board meeting, adopt the by-laws and open a bank account in the corporation's name.

Non-profit is not the same as charity

A not-for-profit corporation does not issue tax receipts for donations. Only a registered charity (or another qualified donee) can do that, and charities face tighter rules on how they spend money, especially on projects abroad. Our guide on whether a Canadian charity can fund projects in Nigeria explains the CRA's own-activities and grant rules. Many associations stay as non-profits because their main work is social and mutual support, which is not charitable in law.

Common mistakes Nigerian associations make

The paperwork is rarely what goes wrong. Trouble usually starts with governance, and it tends to follow the same pattern:

  • One founder holds the bank card, the email account and the registry login. When that person moves or falls out with the executive, the group cannot file anything. Share the registry access with at least two officers.
  • By-laws copied from another group that do not match how elections are actually run, so every disputed election becomes a legal argument.
  • Members' contributions for a specific purpose, such as a member's burial, mixed into general funds with no record of the decision.
  • No plan for what happens when the association winds up, leaving assets in limbo.

An hour spent on these points at the start saves months later. If the association is large enough to have paid staff, also check payroll and employer registration duties with the CRA before the first salary is paid.

Running it well after registration

  • File the annual return every year; a missed return is a common reason community corporations fall into trouble.
  • Keep minutes of board and members' meetings and a register of members.
  • Use two signatories for payments and record why money was spent.
  • If the association sends money home for a burial, school or flood relief, record the decision and keep the receipts from Nigeria.

Where Pryme fits

Associations often pay for projects in Nigeria. A Pryme Business Account can be opened from any country and holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR; Send pays naira accounts at home, and verifiable receipts and statements through our partner VerifyDoc.ai help when members ask for proof of where money went. Check whether your by-laws and your bank's terms allow the association to hold an account outside Canada.

Questions people ask

Should our Nigerian association register federally or in Ontario?

If you operate only in Ontario, the provincial route is cheaper ($155) and avoids a second registration. Federal incorporation ($200) suits groups with chapters in several provinces, but it still has to register in each province where it operates.

Can a non-profit give tax receipts?

No. Only registered charities and other qualified donees can issue official donation receipts. Registering as a charity is a separate application to the CRA.

How many directors does a non-profit need?

It depends on the law you incorporate under and whether the corporation solicits public money. Check the director rules in the incorporation guide for your jurisdiction before you file.

Do we file anything every year?

Yes. Federal not-for-profits file an annual return with Corporations Canada every year ($12 online). Ontario corporations file through the Ontario Business Registry.
