Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Nigeria's poverty data explained: the 133 million figure

What the NBS figure of 133 million multidimensionally poor Nigerians measures, how the index works, and why it differs from the 40.1% income poverty rate.

The short answer

The 133 million figure comes from the NBS 2022 Multidimensional Poverty Index, which found 63% of Nigerians deprived in basic needs such as clean cooking fuel, sanitation, healthcare access, food security and housing, not just short of income. It differs from income poverty: under the 2018/19 national monetary poverty line, 40.1% of Nigerians were poor.

Where the number comes from

The National Bureau of Statistics published the 2022 Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) survey with NASSCO, UNDP, UNICEF and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative. It found 63% of Nigerians, about 133 million people, multidimensionally poor.

How a multidimensional index works

Instead of asking whether income is below a line, the MPI checks each household against a set of deprivations. Indicators reported from the survey include cooking fuel (reliance on dung, wood or charcoal), sanitation, time to reach healthcare, food insecurity, housing and, for children, intellectual stimulation. A person is counted poor when their household's deprivations add up past a threshold.

Headcount
Share of people counted poor: 63%.
MPI value
Headcount multiplied by intensity: 0.257, meaning poor people experience just over a quarter of all possible weighted deprivations.

Key results

MeasureResult
Multidimensionally poor63% (about 133 million)
Rural72% poor
Urban42% poor
Share of poor in the North65% (about 86 million)
Share of poor in the South35% (nearly 47 million)
Lowest stateOndo, 27%
Highest stateSokoto, 91%
Children aged 0–17 poor67.5%

Check the arithmetic: 86 million + 47 million = 133 million. Children make up 51% of all poor people.

Why 63% and 40.1% are both right

Under the 2018/19 national monetary poverty line, 40.1% of Nigerians were poor. The two figures measure different things and come from different surveys and years:

  • Monetary poverty: is household consumption below the cost of a minimum basket?
  • Multidimensional poverty: does the household lack clean fuel, sanitation, health access, schooling and similar basics?

A family can earn above the income line yet cook with firewood and live far from a clinic, and so count as MPI-poor. The report found monetary poverty lower than multidimensional poverty in most states. For the international comparison, read the World Bank poverty line vs NBS figures.

A third number: the World Bank line

Readers also meet a World Bank estimate. In June 2025 the World Bank raised its international extreme poverty line from $2.15 to $3.00 a day, measured in 2021 purchasing power parity dollars. Dataphyte, applying the new line, reported that about 34% of Nigerians, more than 70 million people, were below it in 2018. That is a third measure, built for comparing countries, and it should not be set against the 63% MPI headcount as if they were rival counts of the same thing.

What the figure means for policy and for households

Because the MPI shows which deprivations drive poverty, it points to different fixes than an income line does. A state where most poor households lack clean cooking fuel and sanitation needs different spending from one where the gap is schooling or health access. The report's finding that over half of poor children lack intellectual stimulation is an example of a deprivation that cash alone may not solve. For a household, the index is a reminder that income is only part of wellbeing: distance to a clinic, the fuel used for cooking and the security of food supply are counted too. For income-side planning at household level, see how to budget when income is irregular.

Using the figure carefully

  1. Say "multidimensionally poor", not "living below a dollar a day"; the MPI is not an income measure.
  2. Give the year: the survey is the 2022 MPI.
  3. Use the state table when discussing a state; national averages hide a range from 27% to 91%.
  4. Do not add the MPI and income figures together or treat one as replacing the other.

Questions people ask

Is it true that 133 million Nigerians are poor?

The NBS 2022 Multidimensional Poverty Index found 63% of Nigerians, about 133 million people, multidimensionally poor, meaning deprived across several basic needs, not only income.

Which state has the highest poverty rate in Nigeria?

In the 2022 MPI, Sokoto had the highest multidimensional poverty rate at 91% and Ondo the lowest at 27%.

What is the difference between multidimensional and income poverty?

Income poverty checks whether consumption is below a money line (40.1% under the 2018/19 line); multidimensional poverty checks deprivations such as cooking fuel, sanitation, health access and schooling.

How many Nigerian children are poor?

The 2022 MPI found 67.5% of children aged 0–17 multidimensionally poor; children make up 51% of all poor people.
