Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Nigeria's foreign trade by quarter: NBS exports and imports

Quarterly NBS figures for Nigeria's merchandise exports, imports, total trade and trade balance in naira, with the revisions and one-off items explained.

The short answer

In Q2 2024, Nigeria's merchandise exports were ₦19.42 trillion and imports ₦12.47 trillion, giving total trade of ₦31.89 trillion and a surplus of ₦6.95 trillion, according to the NBS. For full-year 2023, exports were ₦35.96 trillion and imports ₦35.92 trillion as first published. Naira values rose sharply from 2023 largely because the naira weakened, so compare quarters with care.

If the revised Q4 2023 import figure is used instead, 2023 imports fall to about ₦30.86 trillion and the 2023 surplus rises to about ₦5.10 trillion. NBS did not publish a restated annual total in the reports we used, so both views are shown.

Why the Q4 2023 numbers were revised

The Q4 2023 report recorded a ₦14.11 trillion import bill, driven by a single item: ₦5,061.25 billion of 'tanks and other armoured fighting vehicles, motorised', which also made Singapore the top import origin that quarter (36.09% of imports). The Q1 2024 report then cited Q4 2023 imports as ₦9,053.78 billion, about ₦5.05 trillion lower, without detailing the change. The Q2 2024 report similarly restated Q1 2024 imports from ₦12,643.23 billion to ₦13,970.05 billion.

When quoting a quarter, say which edition you used, for example 'Q1 2024 imports of ₦12.64 trillion (NBS, first published June 2024)'.

What drives the naira values

  • The exchange rate. Most trade is priced in US dollars. When the naira weakened in 2023 and 2024, the same dollar value of crude oil or machinery turned into many more naira. Exports roughly tripled in naira between Q2 2023 and Q2 2024 (+201.76%), which mostly reflects the currency, not volumes. For dollar values, see Nigeria's merchandise trade in US dollars.
  • Crude oil. Crude made up 74.98% of exports in Q2 2024 and 80.80% in Q1 2024, so oil prices and output dominate the export line. See oil vs non-oil exports.
  • Fuel imports. 'Mineral fuels' were 35.40% of imports in Q2 2024 (₦4,415.19 billion), the largest import group, followed by machinery and transport equipment (23.08%) and chemicals (15.12%).
  • One-off items, such as the Q4 2023 military vehicles, can swing a quarter by trillions of naira.

Manufactured goods are the largest import sector, at ₦5.58 trillion in Q2 2024, ahead of other oil products such as petrol and diesel at ₦4.43 trillion. The most traded import commodities that quarter were motor spirit, gas oil, durum wheat, butanes and cane sugar for refining.

Re-exports

NBS also reports re-exports, goods imported and sent on without substantial change. They were ₦199.59 billion (3.14% of exports) in Q4 2022, mainly drilling platforms, and ₦50.91 billion (0.40%) in Q4 2023, mainly vessels for breaking up. Re-exports are included in total exports, so they should not be added again.

Trade by region, Q2 2024

Imports came mainly from Asia (₦5,580.60 billion, 44.74%) and Europe (₦4,934.03 billion, 39.56%), followed by America (₦1,337.28 billion, 10.72%), Africa (4.45%) and Oceania (₦66.14 billion, 0.53%). Exports went mainly to Europe (₦8,077.79 billion, 41.60%), Asia (₦4,966.81 billion, 25.58%), America (₦3,880.22 billion, 19.98%) and Africa (12.13%). Country detail is on our page on Nigeria's top trading partners.

NBS reports state that import values are recorded CIF, meaning cost, insurance and freight are included in the value of the goods. For what that means for a single shipment, see FOB vs CIF for importers.

How we put this together

We downloaded NBS Foreign Trade in Goods Statistics PDFs for Q4 2022, Q4 2023, Q1 2024 and Q2 2024 from the NBS e-Library and took totals from each report's highlights and overview. Q1 to Q3 2023 figures come from the comparison lines in later reports. NBS compiles the data mainly from the Nigeria Customs Service (NICIS), NNPC Ltd, NMDPRA, NLNG and the CBN. NBS's own release calendar lists later editions (Foreign Trade in Goods Statistics for Q2 2026 was scheduled for 7 September 2026), but those reports were not available in the NBS e-Library when we checked in October 2026, so this page stops at Q2 2024. We will extend it when the newer files can be retrieved. Exporters and importers who need the paperwork side can see the import documents banks ask for.

Questions people ask

What is Nigeria's total trade value?

NBS put total merchandise trade at ₦31.89 trillion in Q2 2024, with exports of ₦19.42 trillion and imports of ₦12.47 trillion.

Does Nigeria have a trade surplus?

In the NBS data from Q1 2023 to Q2 2024 Nigeria ran a surplus in every quarter except Q4 2023 as first published, when a large military vehicle import produced a ₦1.41 trillion deficit.

Why did Nigeria's trade figures jump in 2024?

Mainly the exchange rate. Trade is largely priced in dollars, so a weaker naira raises naira values even if volumes do not change.

Where can I find the latest NBS foreign trade report?

NBS publishes Foreign Trade in Goods Statistics quarterly on its website and e-Library. Check the edition date, as earlier quarters are sometimes revised.
