Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Banking how-tos

NDIC vs CBN: who does what when a bank has problems

The CBN licenses banks, handles consumer complaints and can revoke licences. The NDIC insures deposits and pays depositors. Who to turn to, and when.

The short answer

The Central Bank of Nigeria licenses and regulates banks, handles customer complaints against open banks through its Consumer Protection Department, and can revoke a bank's licence. The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation insures deposits, supervises banks alongside the CBN to protect depositors, and, once a bank is closed, pays insured deposits and acts in the liquidation. While a bank is open, complain to the bank and then the CBN; after it closes, deal with the NDIC.

Both bodies appear in every story about a struggling bank, and both are regulators, which is why the roles blur. The clearest way to separate them is by stage: the CBN dominates while a bank is alive; the NDIC takes over the depositor's side when it dies.

The two roles side by side

AreaCBNNDIC
LicensingGrants, and can revoke, banking licencesInsures the institutions the CBN licenses
SupervisionRegulator and supervisor of banksAlso examines banks, on-site and off-site, to protect depositors
Customer complaints at open banksConsumer Protection Department, after the bank has had its chanceNot its main role
Bank failureRevokes the licencePays insured deposits, liquidates the bank
Money above the insured limitNo rolePays liquidation dividends from recoveries
Public contactcbn.gov.ng complaints page0800-6342-4357, claimscomplaints@ndic.gov.ng

The NDIC FAQ says there is no duplication of supervisory functions between the two agencies: they collaborate through joint committees and share examination reports. The NDIC's own supervision is aimed at protecting depositors, while the CBN licenses the institutions the NDIC insures.

Stage one: the bank is open but troubled

Most customer problems happen here: failed transfers that are not reversed, unexplained charges, frozen accounts, poor service. The NDIC has no payout to make, because the NDIC FAQ says insured deposits are payable only when an insured institution has been closed.

The CBN's complaints page sets out the route:

  1. Complain first to the bank or branch where the problem started.
  2. Allow the bank time to resolve it; the CBN page refers to two weeks.
  3. If unresolved, write to the Director, Consumer Protection Department, CBN, Central Business District, Abuja. The letter can be delivered at the CBN head office or any CBN branch.
  4. Include your name, address, phone and email, the bank, your account details (never your PIN or password), the date and history of the transaction, the amount claimed, supporting documents and proof that you reported to the bank first.

See also how to complain about a bank or fintech.

Stage two: the licence is revoked

The CBN makes the decision. On 3 June 2024 it revoked Heritage Bank's licence (TheCable, 12 August 2024), and on 1 July 2026 it revoked the licences of 46 microfinance banks (Legit.ng, 10 July 2026). From that point the bank stops trading, and the NDIC moves in.

Stage three: the NDIC pays and liquidates

  • Insured deposits. The NDIC FAQ gives ₦5,000,000 per depositor at deposit money banks and primary mortgage banks, ₦2,000,000 at microfinance banks. It pays mainly through BVN-linked accounts at other banks.
  • Claims and complaints. Depositors not paid automatically use the NDIC claims page and complaint form.
  • Liquidation. The NDIC sells assets and recovers loans, then pays uninsured depositors pro rata, then creditors, then shareholders if anything is left.

Worked example

Example only. Sade's bank keeps failing to reverse a ₦45,000 debit for a transfer that never arrived. That is a stage-one problem: she complains to the bank, waits, then writes to the CBN Consumer Protection Department. Six months later the bank's licence is revoked while she has ₦6,500,000 there. Now it is the NDIC's job: it pays her ₦5,000,000 as the insured sum, and the remaining ₦1,500,000 (₦6,500,000 minus ₦5,000,000) becomes an uninsured claim for liquidation dividends. Her unresolved ₦45,000 dispute would be raised with the NDIC as liquidator, with her evidence.

Other bodies you may need

FCCPC
Consumer protection for digital lenders and loan apps; see its 2025 lending regulations.
NIBSS
Runs the interbank switch (NIP) but does not take complaints from the public; your bank does.
Police and EFCC
For fraud as a crime, alongside your bank's fraud desk.

For what each body says about fraud, see where fraud reports go.

Signs a bank is in trouble, and what each body is doing

Customers usually notice problems before any announcement: transfers that fail more often, delays in withdrawals, limits on how much cash a branch will pay, or branches closing. At that stage the CBN, as supervisor, may be working with the bank behind the scenes, and the NDIC, which also examines banks to protect depositors, may be involved too. Neither body comments on individual banks in advance, so do not rely on rumours on social media.

What you can do is practical. Keep your balance at any one bank within the NDIC limit, make sure your BVN is correct on every account, and hold at least one active account elsewhere so a payout has somewhere to go. If the bank's licence is revoked, the NDIC claims page and official NDIC notices become your source of truth. Use only the NDIC's official contacts, as fraudsters often pose as recovery agents after a closure.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme Financial is a technology company, not a bank. Naira deposits are held by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Ltd, which is licensed by the CBN and insured by the NDIC up to the applicable limit, so both regulators' roles above apply. See how Pryme works.

Questions people ask

Is NDIC part of CBN?

No. They are separate agencies. The CBN licenses and regulates banks; the NDIC insures deposits and pays depositors when a bank closes. They cooperate through joint committees.

Who closes a bank in Nigeria, CBN or NDIC?

The CBN revokes the licence. The NDIC then pays insured depositors and liquidates the bank.

Should I report my bank to CBN or NDIC?

For problems at an open bank, complain to the bank and then the CBN Consumer Protection Department. Go to the NDIC for payouts after a bank has closed.

Does NDIC supervise banks?

Yes. The NDIC FAQ says it carries out on-site and off-site supervision to protect depositors, without duplicating the CBN.
