Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Nationwide mortgage rules for borrowers without ILR

What Nationwide's published criteria say for visa holders. Loan-to-value caps, income tests, time left on the visa and deposits from Nigeria.

The short answer

Nationwide applies its standard mortgage criteria to Irish citizens, ILR holders and people with EU Settlement Scheme status; everyone else is an "other foreign national". Its intermediary criteria, checked in October 2026, allow up to 85% loan-to-value only if primary basic income is £50,000 (sole) or £75,000 (joint), otherwise 75%, and need at least 12 months left on the visa, salary paid in pounds into a UK account and UK tax residence at completion.

Nationwide is one of the UK's largest mortgage lenders, and many Nigerians bank with it already. Its rules for borrowers on visas are published on its broker site, Nationwide for Intermediaries. This article sets out what that page says, so you can tell before applying whether you fit. It describes the criteria; it does not recommend Nationwide over any other lender.

Who counts as a foreign national at Nationwide

Nationwide's page lists three groups who get its standard criteria, the same as a UK national:

  • Republic of Ireland citizens
  • People with Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)
  • People with EU Settlement Scheme settled or pre-settled status

Anyone else, which includes most Nigerians on work, dependant or family visas, is in the other foreign nationals group. In a joint application, if one applicant is a UK or Irish national, or has ILR or EUSS status, standard criteria apply, but the other applicant must still hold an acceptable visa.

The loan-to-value and income tests

Your situation (other foreign nationals)Maximum loan-to-value
Primary basic income £50,000 or more, sole applicationUp to 85%
Primary basic income £75,000 or more, joint applicationUp to 85%
Income below those levels75%

The test is on basic income, so overtime, bonuses and shift allowances may not help you reach it. Our worked example in mortgages on a Health and Care Worker visa shows how the gap between 75% and 85% plays out on a £220,000 home.

Visa, pay and residence conditions

Time left on visa
At least 12 months when proof is uploaded, if your income is being used; otherwise a valid visa
Acceptable visas listed
Including Skilled Worker (Tier 2), Global Talent, Dependent, Family or Private Life, Parent, Spousal and UK Ancestry. The Health and Care Worker visa is not named separately, so ask how it is treated
Proof of status
A GOV.UK check of immigration status document, or an eVisa share code. Biometric Residence Permits are no longer accepted
Income
Primary income in pounds sterling, paid into a UK bank account; the Channel Islands do not count as UK
Tax residence
All applicants UK tax resident at completion

For people who are not yet in the UK or are moving back, the page has a separate expats section: it will not accept income paid in a foreign currency or overseas self-employed income, and asks for a three-year UK address history. Salary from a Nigerian employer, even if you live in the UK, does not meet the sterling income rule.

Why the page is written for brokers

These criteria come from Nationwide's site for mortgage intermediaries, the brokers who place most UK mortgages. Nationwide also takes applications directly. The rules behind both are the lender's; the broker page simply sets them out in more detail. If you apply direct and an adviser tells you something different from the points above, ask them to point to the criterion they are using, and keep a note of the date, since lenders update these pages without notice.

First-time buyer status and Helping Hand

Nationwide defines a first-time buyer as someone who has not held a mortgage in the last three years, in the UK or abroad. A mortgage on a home in Lagos or Abuja in that period means you are not a first-time buyer for its products. (Stamp Duty has its own, stricter test: any home owned anywhere in the world counts; see first-time buyer relief.)

Its Helping Hand option, which lets first-time buyers borrow more against income, needs a minimum income of £30,000 sole or £50,000 joint and a five to ten year fixed rate, and is not available with shared ownership or interest-only. Since foreign nationals still face the LTV and income tests above, check both apply to you.

Deposits and money from Nigeria

  • Gifts are acceptable if there are no conditions attached, with no maximum. A gifted deposit form is needed for gifts of £10,000 or more.
  • Where the donor lives outside the EEA, Nationwide asks for six months of the donor's bank statements with the form.
  • Savings held outside the UK and EEA: three months of statements plus a UK statement showing the transfer in.
  • Money from selling an overseas property: a solicitor's letter or completion statement, and if paid into a non-EEA account, six months of statements.
  • Crypto is not accepted as a deposit source.

Our guide to a Nationwide gifted deposit from a donor in Nigeria goes further.

What to check first

  1. Your status group and your partner's.
  2. Basic income against the £50,000 or £75,000 test.
  3. Months left on the visa on the day you upload proof.
  4. Whether any mortgage abroad in the last three years affects first-time buyer status.
  5. The paper trail for every part of the deposit.

Where Pryme fits

Lenders want to see where a deposit came from. Pryme customers can generate a verifiable statement with VerifyDoc.ai that anyone can check is genuine and unaltered, and naira savings can be converted with Swap, which shows the rate and the fee before you approve. Outside Nigeria, Pryme's activities are carried out through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

Does Nationwide give mortgages to people without ILR?

Yes. Its intermediary criteria cover other foreign nationals, with up to 75% loan-to-value, or 85% if basic income is £50,000 sole or £75,000 joint.

How long left on my visa does Nationwide need?

At least 12 months when proof of status is uploaded, if your income is used for the application.

Does Nationwide accept a BRP for a mortgage?

No. Its page says BRPs are no longer accepted; it uses a GOV.UK immigration status check or an eVisa share code.

Can my parents in Nigeria gift my Nationwide deposit?

Yes, if no conditions are attached. Nationwide asks for a gifted deposit form (£10,000 or more) and six months of the donor's statements when the donor is outside the EEA.
