Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

National Housing Fund contribution: what it is and buys

The 2.5% NHF deduction, who must pay since the 2023 amendment, the FMBN loans it gives access to, and how the refund at 60 works.

The short answer

The National Housing Fund (NHF) is a 2.5% monthly contribution from income, managed by the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN), that gives contributors access to NHF mortgage and home loans and is refunded with interest at 60 or retirement if you never took a housing loan. Since the 2023 amendment summarised by Templars, it is compulsory for public-sector workers earning at least the national minimum wage and for the self-employed, and voluntary for private-sector employees.

What the NHF is

The NHF was created by the National Housing Fund Act of 1992 to pool small monthly contributions into a fund for cheap, long-term home loans. FMBN runs it. Your contribution sits in your own NHF account, identified by a participation number, and it does two jobs: it qualifies you for NHF loans, and it is paid back to you later if you never borrow.

How much, and who pays

FMBN's NHF FAQ describes the contribution as 2.5% of monthly gross salary or income. Some legal summaries, such as LawCare Nigeria's (October 2024), describe it as 2.5% of basic salary, so ask your payroll team which base your employer uses.

Who must contribute changed when the Business Facilitation Act 2022 amended the NHF Act. Templars' note (April 2023) says that, since the amendment was signed in February 2023:

GroupStatus after the 2023 amendment
Public-sector employees earning the national minimum wage or moreCompulsory
Self-employed personsCompulsory
Private-sector employeesVoluntary, at 2.5% of monthly income if they opt in

Where you contribute through work, the employer deducts and remits, under section 9 of the Act as Templars summarises it. The self-employed register and pay directly. LawCare's summary describes the registration forms: employers register with FMBN to get an employer number, and contributors, including the self-employed, register to get a participation number.

Worked example

Example only. Emeka, a federal civil servant, earns a monthly gross of ₦220,000. At 2.5%, his NHF deduction is ₦5,500 a month, or ₦66,000 a year. Over 20 years, before any interest, he would contribute ₦1,320,000.

What it buys: FMBN loans

Being an NHF contributor is the gateway to FMBN's loan products. As at October 2026, FMBN's own pages describe:

  • NHF Mortgage Loan: up to ₦50 million at 6% a year, for up to 30 years, to build, buy, improve or renovate your own home. FMBN lends to accredited primary mortgage banks at 4%, which on-lend to contributors at 6%. You need six months of continuous contributions.
  • Home Renovation Loan: for contributors renovating a home they or their family own; FMBN's 2018 paper to the Bureau of Public Service Reforms gave a maximum of ₦1 million; check the current limit.

FMBN's FAQ says it uses one-third of an applicant's income as the limit for servicing an NHF loan. Rates and limits can change; check the current terms on fmbn.gov.ng or with an accredited mortgage bank before applying. For the pension route to a deposit, see using 25% of your RSA as mortgage equity.

What a 6% loan costs: example

Example only, using the 6% rate on FMBN's page. A ₦15,000,000 NHF mortgage over 20 years at 6% a year, repaid monthly, costs about ₦107,465 a month. Over 240 months that is ₦25,791,600, of which ₦10,791,600 is interest. To fit FMBN's one-third rule, the borrower would need monthly income of at least about ₦322,395.

The refund at 60

If you never take an NHF housing loan, the money comes back to you. Templars' summary of section 20 of the Act says a contributor without a housing loan is refunded at 60 or on retirement, with interest at the rate the Minister prescribes, and should claim within three months. LawCare's summary puts the interest at 2%; we could not confirm a current rate on an FMBN page.

An FMBN paper to the Bureau of Public Service Reforms (September 2018, possibly outdated) lists refund grounds as age 60 or 35 years' service, ill health, or death (paid to next of kin), and documents such as the refund form stamped by the employer, the NHF passbook, a retirement letter and bank details. It said refunds took up to three months. Check FMBN's current requirements before applying.

NHF is not your pension

NHF and your Retirement Savings Account often sit on the same payslip, so people mix them up. They are separate schemes with separate regulators and rules.

NHFRSA pension
Run byFMBNYour PFA, supervised by PenCom
Rate2.5% of monthly income (FMBN FAQ)At least 18% of monthly emoluments, split between employer and employee
Main useAccess to cheap housing loansIncome in retirement
Paid backRefund at 60 or retirement if no NHF loanLump sum and monthly pension at retirement

An unpaid NHF deduction is a matter for FMBN; an unpaid pension deduction is a matter for your PFA and PenCom. Keep the two records separate. The pension rates are set out in pension contribution rates.

What to check first

  • Whether you are in a compulsory group or contributing voluntarily.
  • Your NHF participation number, and that your payslip deductions appear on your NHF record.
  • That your employer remits; ask HR for remittance evidence.
  • Before borrowing, the current rate, limit and documents on FMBN's site.
  • Before claiming a refund, FMBN's current list of documents.

NHF also reduces your taxable income: the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 lists NHF contributions among allowed deductions, according to a November 2025 Mondaq summary. See pension, NHF and PAYE relief and payslip template.

Where Pryme fits

An NHF loan still needs a deposit, fees and moving costs. A Pryme Naira Fixed Box can hold a home deposit away from daily spending, with the rate shown in the app before you lock it.

Questions people ask

Is NHF compulsory for private sector workers?

No. Since the 2023 amendment summarised by Templars, private-sector employees contribute voluntarily; it is compulsory for public-sector workers on at least minimum wage and for the self-employed.

How much is NHF deduction?

2.5% of monthly gross salary or income, according to FMBN's NHF FAQ; some summaries say basic salary, so check your employer's base.

Can I get my NHF money back?

Yes, if you never took an NHF housing loan: it is refunded at 60 or on retirement, with interest, under section 20 of the NHF Act as Templars summarises.

How much NHF loan can I get?

FMBN's NHF Mortgage Loan page shows up to ₦50 million at 6% over up to 30 years, limited by one-third of your income. Check current terms with FMBN.
