Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

NGX All-Share Index: what it measures

The NGX All-Share Index tracks the prices of shares listed on the Nigerian Exchange. What it includes, what moves it, and how to use it with care.

The short answer

The NGX All-Share Index (ASI) is the Nigerian Exchange's broad gauge of how the prices of its listed shares move as a group, reported each trading day as an index level and a percentage change. It rises when the shares that make up most of the market's value rise, so a handful of very large companies can move it more than dozens of small ones. Use it to judge the market's direction, not to judge your own portfolio.

What the All-Share Index is

When a news report says "the Nigerian stock market gained 1.74% today", it is usually quoting the NGX All-Share Index, often shortened to ASI. It is a single number published by the Nigerian Exchange that summarises how the prices of listed shares moved during a trading session. A rising ASI means that, taken together and adjusted for size, listed shares were worth more at the close than at the previous close. A falling ASI means the reverse.

The index is not a price you can buy. It is a measuring stick. The level itself matters less than how it changes over a day, a month or a year. Reports therefore quote three things: the change on the day, the change month to date, and the change year to date.

How it is built: what goes in and how it is weighted

An all-share index aims to cover the whole equity market rather than a hand-picked basket, which is what separates the ASI from narrower NGX indices built around a sector or around the largest companies. For the exact rules (base date, eligibility, how corporate actions such as bonus issues are handled, and how often the index is reviewed) read the index methodology NGX publishes; this article does not restate those rules from memory.

What you can see from published data is that the index behaves like a size-weighted measure. On 5 January 2026, Techeconomy reported that the ASI rose 1.74% while total equity market capitalisation rose from ₦99.94 trillion to ₦101.81 trillion, a gain of ₦1.87 trillion (about 1.87%). The two figures moved closely together, which is what you would expect when bigger companies count for more. They were not identical, and that difference is itself useful.

Why the index and market capitalisation can differ

  • Market capitalisation is simply share price multiplied by shares in issue, added up across the market. It goes up when a new company lists or a listed company issues more shares, even if no price moves.
  • An index is designed to move only when prices move. Index providers adjust their calculations so that a new listing or a share issue does not, by itself, push the index up.
  • So a day when market capitalisation jumps more than the ASI may reflect new shares or listings rather than a stronger rally.

What moves the ASI

Anything that changes what investors will pay for Nigerian shares can move the index. The useful habit is to ask which shares moved it, because a broad index can rise on the back of a few heavyweights.

DriverHow it shows up in the ASI
Large-company price movesA big move in one or two of the most valuable listed companies can lift or drag the whole index.
Breadth (how many shares rose or fell)On 5 January 2026, Techeconomy reported 73 gainers against 8 decliners: a broad rally, not a narrow one.
Interest rates and treasury bill yieldsWhen safer instruments pay more, some investors move money out of shares, and the reverse when yields fall.
Inflation and the nairaHigh inflation erodes real returns; a weaker naira affects companies with dollar costs or dollar earnings differently.
Company results and dividendsEarnings releases and dividend announcements move individual shares, and through them the index.
Daily price limitsNGX caps how far a share can move in a day. The same report described +10% as the daily maximum gain.

Volume and value tell you how much money stood behind a move. On the same January day, volume rose 58.13% to 695.64 million shares while value fell 25.57% to ₦18.57 billion across 56,606 deals: more shares changed hands, but at lower total value, which usually means activity was heavy in cheaper shares.

How to use the ASI sensibly

  1. Use it for direction, not for your own result. Your portfolio holds a few companies; the index holds the market. Compare your own return with it over a year, not a week.
  2. Look at the year-to-date figure in naira and in real terms. A gain below the inflation rate is a loss of purchasing power. Headline inflation was 14.63% year on year in September 2026, according to NBS figures reported by Voice of Nigeria; check the latest NBS release before comparing.
  3. Check breadth. A rising ASI with more decliners than gainers means a few large shares are carrying the market.
  4. Remember dividends. Price indices track prices; part of what shareholders earn comes as dividends, which a price index may not capture. Check the methodology for whether a total-return version exists.
  5. Do not trade on one day's move. Daily price limits and thin trading in some shares mean a single session can overstate or understate real demand.

Worked example: reading a market report

Example only. Suppose a report reads: "The ASI rose 1.2% to close the week, year-to-date return 9%, market capitalisation up ₦1.5 trillion, 40 gainers, 35 losers." Here is how to read it.

  • The market rose for the week, but with 40 gainers and 35 losers the move was narrow. A few large shares probably drove it.
  • A 9% year-to-date gain sounds healthy, but if inflation over the same period is running higher, real value has fallen.
  • Check whether any new listing or share issue happened that week before treating the ₦1.5 trillion as pure price gain.

To see which shares moved, use the daily price list; our guide on how to read the NGX daily price list explains the columns, and how the Nigerian stock exchange works covers the basics of trading.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme does not offer share trading, and nothing here is advice to buy shares. If you are building cash for investing, a Naira Savings Box can hold it while you decide; rates are shown in the app. Before you invest, read the risks of buying Nigerian stocks.

Questions people ask

What is the NGX ASI today?

The ASI changes every trading day. Check the Nigerian Exchange's own market data or a dated market report for today's level; do not rely on a figure quoted weeks ago.

Is the All-Share Index the same as the stock market?

It is a summary of it. The ASI condenses the price moves of listed shares into one number, weighted so that larger companies count for more.

Why did the ASI rise when my shares fell?

Because the index is dominated by the largest companies. If a few heavyweights rose while smaller shares fell, the ASI can rise even as most shares decline.

Does the NGX ASI include dividends?

A price index tracks prices. Check NGX's index methodology for whether a total-return version that adds back dividends is published.
