Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2016E-commerce

An online grocery store, built out of a faulty tab. Selling the food was the easy part — taking the money for it, and moving it, turned out to be the business.

2018OjirehPrime Card

A prepaid card. The first time the company issued rather than resold, and the first time it carried the obligations that come with holding somebody else’s money.

2020Microfinance bank

PrymeSolid Allianze acquired — an existing bank with an existing licence. The perimeter stopped being someone else’s to draw.

2023Multicurrency

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.

2026Agentic operations

Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Ghana

Will my naira debit card work at an ATM in Accra?

A naira card works at an Accra ATM only if your bank allows foreign ATM use. Published daily caps, the fees on both sides, and what to check first.

The short answer

Only if your Nigerian bank enables it, and ATM use is often the most restricted channel. FirstBank was reported in September 2026 to allow US$1,000 a day at ATMs on its naira Mastercard, Stanbic IBTC caps naira debit card use abroad at US$100 a month across POS, web and ATM, and Fidelity Bank says individual naira cards cannot be used internationally at all.

Pulling cedis from an ATM with a Nigerian card is the quickest way to get local cash on arrival, and the most likely to fail. Banks treat foreign ATM withdrawals as cash leaving the country, so they cap them tightly, and some exclude ATMs altogether. The answer depends on the bank that issued your card, the card type, and the settings in your app.

Zenith BankUp to US$50,000 a year; channels not statedNairametrics, 7 Sep 2026

Where a bank gives a single figure without channels, do not assume it applies at ATMs. Ask the bank how much of it can be taken as cash abroad. Banks not in this table may allow ATM use; we did not find a published figure for them (as at October 2026).

Fees you may pay twice

  • Your Nigerian bank converts the dollar value to naira at its own rate and may charge a foreign ATM fee set in its tariff.
  • The Ghanaian ATM owner may add its own charge, which the screen should show before you confirm. Fidelity Bank's FAQ, for its dollar card, says ATM owner charges apply on top of the bank's own charge; expect the same principle with any card.
  • Conversion offers on screen. If the ATM offers to charge you in naira, declining usually leaves conversion to your card scheme and bank.

Worked example (illustrative figures only). You withdraw GH₵ 1,200. At GH₵ 12 per dollar that is US$100, which on a Stanbic IBTC naira card would use the whole monthly allowance at once. If your bank debits ₦1,450 per dollar, you pay ₦145,000, plus any ATM owner charge and bank fee. Withdrawing less often, in larger sums, keeps per-withdrawal fees down but uses caps faster.

Why a withdrawal fails

  1. International use is switched off in the app.
  2. The bank allows POS and web abroad but not ATM.
  3. The daily or monthly cap is reached.
  4. The ATM network does not accept your card type: Verve cards are accepted less widely abroad than Visa or Mastercard.
  5. The bank's fraud system blocks a first foreign withdrawal.

Planning cash for the first weeks

The tight caps mean a naira card is a poor main source of cash for anyone moving to Ghana rather than visiting. A common plan is to arrive with a modest amount of cash, use the naira card only as a fallback, and open a local account and MoMo wallet as soon as your non-citizen Ghana Card and address are in place. If you hold dollars at home, moving a lump sum by transfer to a Ghana FCA and withdrawing locally is usually cheaper than many small ATM withdrawals; see moving dollars from a Nigerian dom account to Ghana.

A retained card in a foreign ATM is hard to recover; if a machine keeps your card, call your Nigerian bank to block it, and ask the ATM's bank in Ghana about its retrieval process.

What to check first

  • Your bank's current ATM allowance abroad, in writing.
  • Whether your card is Visa, Mastercard or Verve.
  • The international use toggle in your app.
  • A backup: cedis from a Ghanaian account, a dollar card linked to a domiciliary account, or MoMo.

For cards at shops and online, see using a naira card in Ghana. Bank-by-bank detail is in our Nigeria library, for example GTBank's naira card international limit. If you are staying longer, a local account is cheaper; see opening a Ghana account as a Nigerian.

If a withdrawal fails but your account is debited, which happens occasionally across networks, note the time, ATM location and amount, keep any slip, and raise a dispute with your Nigerian bank promptly. Reversals on foreign ATMs take longer than local ones because two networks and two banks are involved.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme keeps naira and dollars in one account opened from abroad, so you can move money when you choose rather than relying on card caps; Swap shows the rate first and the fee on its own line, and security uses an authenticator app rather than SMS codes.

Questions people ask

Can I withdraw cedis with a Nigerian ATM card?

Only if your bank allows foreign ATM use on that card. FirstBank was reported to allow US$1,000 a day; Fidelity Bank does not allow naira cards abroad.

What is the ATM limit for naira cards abroad?

It differs by bank. Stanbic IBTC's naira debit card allows US$100 a month across all channels; FirstBank's naira Mastercard was reported at US$1,000 a day at ATMs.

Why did the ATM in Accra decline my card?

Usually international use is off, ATMs are excluded, the cap is used up, or a fraud block. Call your bank.

Do Ghana ATMs charge Nigerian cards?

The ATM owner may add a charge, shown on screen, on top of your bank's own fee and conversion.
