Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Multicurrency accounts for Nigerians in the US: how they work

How one account can hold dollars and naira with separate account details, who holds the money, what it costs to convert, and what to report.

The short answer

A multicurrency account holds separate balances in each currency, such as USD and NGN, inside one login. Each balance can have its own local account details, so a US payer sends dollars and a Nigerian payer sends naira by ordinary local transfer. Money stays in the currency it arrived in until you convert it, at a rate and fee shown first.

For a Nigerian in the US, the old set-up was two banks: a US checking account and a naira account at home, with a remittance app in between. A multicurrency account puts the balances side by side. The idea is simple, but the details (who actually holds each balance, what protects it, and what you have to report) matter more than the app screen.

The basic structure

Balances
One balance per currency. Dollars stay dollars, naira stay naira.
Account details
Each currency can have its own local details: a US-style account and routing number for dollars, a Nigerian account number for naira, and so on.
Conversion
You move money between balances when you choose, at a quoted rate and fee.
Sending
You pay out from the balance in the same currency, so no hidden conversion.

The practical result: your Nigerian tenant or client pays naira by an ordinary local transfer, your US employer or client pays dollars, and nothing is converted until you decide.

Who holds the money

A multicurrency app is usually not one bank. Different regulated institutions often hold different currencies. For your naira, it matters which Nigerian institution holds the deposit and whether it is covered by the NDIC; for your dollars, it matters where they are held and under which country's rules.

  • NDIC cover applies to deposits at Nigerian banks: up to N2,000,000 per depositor at a microfinance bank and N5,000,000 at a commercial bank, according to the NDIC FAQ.
  • FDIC insurance applies to deposits at US banks, and protects against bank failure, not currency movement; EverBank, for example, describes its foreign currency accounts as FDIC-insured against bank insolvency.
  • Ask each provider, in writing, who holds each balance. See whether a Nigerian dom account is FDIC covered and NDIC cover for diaspora accounts.

Multicurrency account vs the alternatives

OptionHolds naira?Typical point to check
US bank foreign currency accountGenerally no; EverBank's list does not include NGNEverBank: US$2,500 to open, rate within 1% of its own
Nigerian domiciliary plus naira accountYes, at the same bankSeparate accounts; dom transfers out up to US$10,000 a day without Form A under the 2026 Manual, per Mondaq
Multicurrency account with NGN detailsYesWho holds each balance; the rate and fee shown before conversion

The Nigeria-side comparison is in domiciliary account vs multicurrency account.

A month in practice

Picture a nurse in Atlanta with a flat in Ibadan let to a tenant. In one month:

  1. Her US salary arrives in dollars in her US bank, as usual.
  2. Her tenant pays the quarter's rent in naira by local transfer into her naira balance.
  3. She pays her mother's hospital bill in Ibadan from the same naira balance, with no conversion.
  4. She converts the rest of the rent to dollars when she is happy with the rate shown.
  5. She downloads a statement for each currency for her records and her US tax return.

The difference from the old two-bank set-up is that steps 2 to 4 happen without a remittance app in the middle and without naira being converted to dollars and back. The cost that remains is the one conversion in step 4. For rent specifically, see receiving rent from a Nigerian tenant.

What it costs

  • Conversion: the gap between the rate you get and the market rate, plus any fee. Compare by how much arrives in the target currency.
  • Sending: a fee per payment, which may differ by currency and route.
  • Receiving: some providers charge for incoming payments in certain currencies; check the tariff.

Reporting in the US

The IRS requires amounts on a US return in dollars, converted at the rate prevailing when you receive them, so naira income in any account still counts. If balances held outside the US, including a naira balance at a Nigerian institution, together exceed US$10,000 at any time in a year, you file an FBAR with FinCEN (IRS comparison page). See is a Nigerian account a foreign financial account.

What to check first

  1. Can you open it from the US with your current ID and address?
  2. Which currencies have local account details, not just a balance?
  3. Who holds each currency, and what insurance applies?
  4. Is the rate and fee shown before every conversion?
  5. How do you get statements for your US records?

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Personal Account can be opened from any country and holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR, with local account details for each. Money stays in the currency it arrived in; Swap shows the rate first, the fee on its own line, and you approve. Naira deposits are held by a licensed Nigerian microfinance bank, regulated by the CBN and insured by the NDIC up to the applicable limit; outside Nigeria, activities are carried out through regulated partners. See multicurrency and open an account.

Questions people ask

What is a multicurrency account?

One account with separate balances in several currencies, often each with its own local account details, and conversion only when you choose.

Can I receive naira into a multicurrency account from the US?

Yes, if the account has Nigerian naira account details: the payer in Nigeria sends an ordinary local transfer.

Is my money insured in a multicurrency account?

It depends who holds each balance. NDIC covers Nigerian bank deposits up to set limits; FDIC covers US bank deposits.

Do I report a multicurrency account to the IRS?

Balances held outside the US count toward the FBAR threshold of US$10,000 in aggregate.
