Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

MiFi vs phone hotspot in Nigeria: which is cheaper?

When a phone hotspot is enough and when a MiFi pays for itself in Nigeria: device cost, data plans, battery wear and a worked monthly example.

The short answer

A phone hotspot is cheaper if you only share data occasionally, because there is no device to buy and you use the bundle already on your line. A MiFi becomes worth it when several devices share a connection every day, when you need your phone's battery for calls, or when a different network has better signal where you work. The data cost is similar either way: what you pay per GB depends on the bundle, not the device, so compare plans on *312#.

A MiFi is a small battery-powered router that takes a SIM and shares its data over Wi-Fi. A phone hotspot does the same job with the phone you already own. Both MTN and Airtel sell MiFi devices and data plans for them, as do other networks and ISPs. The question is not which is faster in general, but which costs less for the way you use data, once you count the device, the plans and the wear on your phone.

What each costs

Phone hotspot

  • No device cost.
  • Uses your phone's own bundle, so the cost per GB is whatever your plan gives.
  • Drains the phone battery quickly and keeps the phone warm, which over months shortens battery life.
  • If the phone leaves the room, the laptop loses its connection; a call can also interrupt data on some phones.

MiFi

  • An upfront device cost: check the network's shop or website for the current price, as we did not confirm one.
  • Its own SIM and data plan. On some networks, MiFi or router plans are sold as separate bundles; compare them with ordinary bundles on *312#.
  • Its own battery, so your phone stays free for calls.
  • Can sit near a window for the best signal, and can carry a different network from your phone.

Data plans: the real cost

Data is priced per bundle, whatever device it sits in. As dated examples, TechCabal reported Airtel monthly plans in February 2025 of 10GB at ₦4,000 (₦400 per GB), 25GB at ₦8,000 (₦320 per GB) and a 200GB 30-day plan at ₦20,000 (₦100 per GB). The lesson is that one large bundle in one device is usually cheaper per GB than two smaller bundles in two phones. A MiFi lets a household pool its data into one bigger bundle.

Worked example (illustration)

Two people each buy a 10GB monthly bundle and hotspot a laptop sometimes. Using the February 2025 Airtel prices, that is 2 × ₦4,000 = ₦8,000 for 20GB. If instead they buy one 25GB bundle at ₦8,000 for a shared MiFi, they pay the same and get 5GB more.

Now add the device. Suppose a MiFi costs ₦30,000 (an illustrative figure, not a quoted price) and you keep it for 24 months: ₦30,000 ÷ 24 = ₦1,250 a month. The MiFi setup then costs ₦9,250 a month for 25GB (₦370 per GB) against ₦8,000 for 20GB on phones (₦400 per GB). In this example the MiFi is slightly cheaper per GB and frees both phones' batteries, but more expensive in total each month. If they only need 20GB, the phones win.

When each makes sense

SituationBetter choiceWhy
Occasional laptop use, one personPhone hotspotNo device cost
Daily work on a laptopMiFiSaves phone battery; can stay at the desk
Household sharing dataMiFi with one large bundleLower cost per GB than several small bundles
Poor signal for your phone network at homeMiFi on another networkNetwork choice separate from your phone number
Heavy streaming, many devicesHome router or fixed serviceMiFi devices cap connections and battery life

Battery and heat

Running a hotspot for hours each day is one of the heaviest loads you can put on a phone battery. If you rely on your phone for banking, authentication and calls, keeping it cool and charged matters. A MiFi absorbs that wear instead, and when its battery fades, it is a cheaper device to replace than a phone. Keep any device off the bed or sofa while sharing, as heat builds up quickly.

What to check first

  1. How many GB you use a month across all devices.
  2. Which network has the best signal where you use the internet, indoors.
  3. The current MiFi price and whether it is locked to one network.
  4. Whether MiFi plans on that network cost the same per GB as ordinary bundles.
  5. Grace periods: Airtel's FAQ says monthly bundle data is kept if you renew the same bundle within 7 days of expiry.

Security on a shared connection

Change the default Wi-Fi name and password on a new MiFi, because default passwords are often printed on the device and easy to guess. On a phone hotspot, set a strong password and turn the hotspot off when you finish, so nobody nearby uses your data. On either, check the list of connected devices now and again: an unknown device is a sign the password has leaked.

If several people share one MiFi, agree who tops it up and when. A shared bundle that runs out mid-month with nobody responsible for renewing it is a common source of household friction and of costly emergency top-ups on small, expensive bundles.

Where Pryme fits

Whichever you choose, the SIM in a MiFi takes ordinary data purchases, so you can top it up from the Pryme app like any line (airtime and data). For a bigger home setup, see MTN vs Airtel router vs Spectranet and cheapest data per GB.

Questions people ask

Is MiFi cheaper than hotspot?

The data costs the same per bundle. MiFi adds a device cost, but lets a household share one large, cheaper-per-GB bundle and saves phone battery.

Does hotspot damage my phone battery?

Long daily hotspot use adds heat and charge cycles, which wear a battery faster. Occasional use is fine.

Can I use any SIM in a MiFi?

Only if the device is unlocked. Network-sold MiFi devices are often locked to that network; ask before buying.

Which is better for remote work?

A MiFi or router, as a primary or backup, so your phone stays free and the connection does not depend on the phone being nearby.
