Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

City guides

Moving to Port Harcourt from Lagos or Abuja: money to plan

Relocating to Port Harcourt for work? Housing, PHED, RIRS tax, keke and taxi costs, and how the oil and gas cycle shapes the budget. A practical guide.

The short answer

Plan for rent upfront and fees, a generator or estate power budget, and a transport line built around keke, taxis and buses rather than BRT or ride-hailing. Switch your tax residence to RIRS and your electricity account to PHED. If your job is linked to oil and gas, keep a bigger buffer, because allowances and contracts in the sector can change quickly.

Port Harcourt draws people from Lagos and Abuja mainly for oil and gas, construction, maritime and Rivers State government work. Many move on a contract or posting, sometimes with a relocation allowance, sometimes without. The city's money habits differ from both: shorter trips, more reliance on generators in many neighbourhoods, and a job market that moves with the energy sector.

Choosing where to live

Where you live shapes almost every other cost. A rough guide to areas newcomers consider:

  • GRA and Old GRA: quieter, closer to many offices; higher rents.
  • Woji and Peter Odili Road area: popular with professionals; newer estates; service charges common.
  • Trans-Amadi: industrial and office hub; convenient for many oil and gas jobs; mixed residential options nearby.
  • Rumuola, Rumuokoro and Rumuigbo: busy, well connected by keke and bus, generally more affordable.
  • D-Line and Old Port Harcourt Township: central, commercial, close to markets and long-established neighbourhoods.

Ask employers or colleagues which roads are worst at peak time. A cheaper flat that adds an hour in traffic each way can cost more than it saves.

The upfront budget

ItemNote
RentCommonly a year upfront; confirm the period and any renewal terms in writing
Agency and legal feesAgree the amounts before you view; get receipts
Service charge or estate levyOften covers security, waste and shared power
Generator or inverterMany households budget for backup power; ask neighbours about supply
Moving goodsRoad haulage from Lagos or Abuja takes a long day; insure fragile items
BufferThree months of living costs, more if your income is contract-based

Worked example (illustrative figures). Emeka moves from Lugbe in Abuja to a two-bedroom in Rumuola. Example rent ₦2,800,000, fees ₦420,000, estate levy ₦250,000, moving ₦700,000, a small inverter ₦900,000 and setup ₦250,000: ₦5,320,000. With three months of ₦320,000 living costs as a buffer, his target is ₦6,280,000. Because his role is a two-year contract, he raises the buffer to five months.

What to switch when you arrive

Tax: RIRS

As a Rivers State resident, your personal income tax should go to the Rivers State Internal Revenue Service. Tell your employer the date you moved so PAYE is remitted to Rivers from then on. If your job sends you offshore or between states, ask HR how your residence is treated; tax law has specific rules for itinerant workers. See LIRS, FCT-IRS or RIRS for the detail.

Electricity: PHED

Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution supplies the city. Get the meter number and band from the previous receipt, confirm prepaid or postpaid, and make sure no debt transfers to you. Our guide to checking your electricity band shows how.

Transport

Keke handles most short trips, with shared taxis and buses on longer routes. There is no city rail. Track a week of fares before setting a monthly figure.

Budgeting around the oil and gas cycle

Many Port Harcourt incomes depend, directly or indirectly, on oil and gas activity: contract staff, vendors, drivers, caterers and landlords alike. When activity slows, contracts end and allowances are cut; when it picks up, rents and service prices can rise. Practical habits help:

  1. Base your fixed costs on basic pay, not allowances or overtime.
  2. Save allowances in a separate pot until you know they are lasting.
  3. Keep at least three to six months of essential costs as an emergency fund.
  4. Avoid committing to two-year rent upfront if your contract ends sooner.

Our guide to building an emergency fund explains how to size and store it.

Everyday spending once you settle

Day-to-day costs in Port Harcourt have their own pattern. Markets such as Mile 1 and Mile 3 and the shops along D-Line are where many households buy foodstuffs in bulk, while supermarkets in GRA and around Trans-Amadi serve shoppers who prefer fixed prices. Seafood and some local produce can be easier to find than in Abuja, while goods trucked in from the north or from Lagos may cost more. Eating out is a large part of social life, and visitors on work trips keep hotels, eateries and lounges busy, which supports prices in popular areas. Track four weeks of spending before you fix a food and leisure budget, rather than copying what you spent in Lagos or Abuja.

If your employer pays a relocation or housing allowance, ask whether it is paid as a lump sum or spread across payslips, and whether it is taxed. The answer changes how much you can commit to upfront rent, and whether you should keep part of the allowance aside for renewal.

Rainy season planning

Port Harcourt is one of the cities named for flash and urban flood risk in the federal government's 2026 Annual Flood Outlook. When choosing a flat, ask how the street drains, and budget for higher transport costs on heavy-rain days.

Where Pryme fits

You can pay PHED bills, buy airtime and data, and keep rent and emergency money in separate Savings Boxes from one Pryme account. Spaces operates in Port Harcourt too, so if you hold a Loans on Spaces offer, it works with Spaces merchants there.

Questions people ask

Is Port Harcourt cheaper than Lagos?

Some costs, such as short transport trips, can be lower, while others, such as backup power and rent in popular areas, can be high. Compare by area and track your first month.

Which areas are good to live in Port Harcourt for workers?

Newcomers often look at GRA, Woji, Trans-Amadi and the Rumuola and Rumuokoro axis. Choose based on commute, budget and how the street drains in the rainy season.

Do I pay tax to Rivers State if I work offshore?

It depends on your residence and work pattern. Tax law has rules for workers who work across states. Ask your employer and a tax adviser.

Which electricity company serves Port Harcourt?

Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution, known as PHED.
