Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Ghana

Is a marriage registered in Ghana valid in Nigeria?

How a marriage registered in Ghana is generally treated in Nigeria, and the certificate, authentication and name-change steps to use it there.

The short answer

Common-law courts generally judge whether a marriage was validly formed by the law of the country where it took place, so a marriage properly registered in Ghana is usually treated as a marriage in Nigeria too, subject to each party's capacity to marry. To use it in Nigeria, get a certified copy of the Ghanaian certificate, have it authenticated by Ghana's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and legalised by the Nigeria High Commission in Accra. This is information, not legal advice.

The general rule

Courts in common-law countries, Nigeria among them, generally ask two questions about a foreign marriage. First, was the ceremony valid under the law of the place where it happened? Lawyers call this the lex loci celebrationis. Second, did each person have the capacity to marry, for example because neither was already married under a monogamous system? England's Court of Appeal applied the first test in Awuku v Secretary of State in 2017 and held that a Ghanaian customary proxy marriage was formally valid in England because Ghanaian law recognised it. That is an English case, not a Nigerian one, but it shows how Ghanaian marriages are treated by courts working from the same common-law tradition.

Which kind of Ghanaian marriage do you have?

Ghanaian law recognises customary marriage as well as registered civil and church marriages (the 2017 English case above turned on a Ghanaian customary marriage), and the paperwork differs:

  • A registered civil or church marriage produces a marriage certificate from the registering officer. This is the easiest to use abroad.
  • A customary marriage is valid in Ghana but may not have been registered. If it was not, registering it in Ghana first gives you a certificate other countries can read.
  • A marriage conducted at the Nigerian mission, if any, is a different matter; ask the mission what it issued.

Ask the office that recorded your marriage, the Registrar-General's Department or the district registrar concerned, for a certified copy. We could not open a current official page with the fee or turnaround, so ask when you apply.

Making the certificate usable in Nigeria

Nigeria is not a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, according to the Convention's status table. So the Ghanaian certificate goes through the older chain:

  1. Certified copy from the Ghanaian registrar.
  2. Notarial certification by a notary public of the Judicial Service, if required; the Embassy of Mexico in Ghana describes this as the first step for Ghanaian documents.
  3. Authentication at the Legal and Consular Bureau of Ghana's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  4. Legalisation at the Nigeria High Commission in Accra.
  5. Use in Nigeria, keeping the original chain of stamps intact.

The same chain is explained in more detail for birth certificates in our legalisation guide.

Where you will actually be asked for it

Changing your name on a Nigerian passport

NIS guidance reported in November 2024 says a change of name by marriage needs the husband's data page or NIN slip, the marriage certificate and a newspaper publication. Missions add their own list; the Ottawa mission, for example, also asks for a signed spouse consent letter and a court affidavit with publication for marriages in Nigeria. Change the name on your NIN first, because the passport form must match it.

Banks and BVN

The CBN's BVN framework, as reported in 2023, allows a name change for marriage supported by a marriage certificate, affidavit or newspaper advert. Updates are done at bank branches. See updating your BVN from Ghana.

Property, estates and spouses' rights

A Nigerian court or registry dealing with land or an estate is the most likely to scrutinise a foreign certificate. Authenticated copies avoid an early refusal.

If one of you was already married

Capacity is where recognition can fail. A registered monogamous marriage while one party already has a subsisting marriage may not be recognised in the other country. Nigerian law on this point turns on the type of each marriage. Take advice before relying on the certificate.

Checklist before you leave Ghana

  1. Order two or more certified copies of the marriage certificate.
  2. Have at least one authenticated at Ghana's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and legalised at the Nigeria High Commission in Accra.
  3. If the marriage was customary and unregistered, ask a Ghanaian lawyer or registrar about registering it first.
  4. Decide whether either spouse will change surname, and in what order: NIN first, then passport, then bank and BVN.
  5. Keep scans of every page and stamp; some Nigerian agencies accept a scan at the first stage and the original later.

Doing this while you are still in Accra is far cheaper than arranging it through a relative or agent once you are in Lagos and discover an office will not accept the plain certificate.

Where Pryme fits

Couples who share costs across Accra and home sometimes keep naira, dollars and pounds in one place. A Pryme account holds each currency with its own details; see multicurrency accounts.

Questions people ask

Is a Ghana marriage certificate valid in Nigeria?

Generally a marriage validly formed under Ghanaian law is treated as a marriage elsewhere, subject to capacity. For official use in Nigeria, authenticate the certificate at Ghana's MFA and legalise it at the Nigeria High Commission in Accra.

Do I need to register my Ghana marriage in Nigeria?

We found no official requirement to re-register it. Agencies will ask for the certificate itself, ideally authenticated and legalised.

Can I apostille my Ghanaian marriage certificate for Nigeria?

No. Nigeria is not a party to the Apostille Convention, so the authentication and legalisation chain is used instead.

How do I change my name on my Nigerian passport after marrying in Ghana?

Update your NIN first, then apply with the marriage certificate, your husband's data page or NIN slip and a newspaper publication, plus any extra items the Accra mission lists.
