Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Loans

Market women loans in Nigeria: LAPO, cooperatives and state funds

The main routes for market women to borrow in Nigeria: group-lending MFBs such as LAPO, market cooperatives and state women funds, and how each works.

The short answer

Market women in Nigeria mostly borrow through three routes: microfinance banks that lend to groups of traders, LAPO Microfinance Bank being the best known; market and trade cooperatives that lend a multiple of members' savings; and state or federal schemes aimed at women in business. Group lending replaces collateral with mutual guarantee: members vouch for one another and can be held responsible if one defaults.

Why group lending suits market women

Most market women trade without land titles in their own names, audited accounts or payslips, which is what banks normally ask for. Group lending was designed for exactly that situation. Instead of property, the lender relies on a small group of traders who know each other, meet regularly and guarantee each other's loans.

How group lending typically works

  1. A small group of women who trade in the same market form a group, often with a leader and secretary.
  2. The group meets the lender's officer regularly, often weekly, for training and collections.
  3. Each member saves for a period before the first loan; savings may be held as security.
  4. Loans are small at first and grow with each cycle repaid on time.
  5. If a member does not pay, the group may be asked to cover her instalment, and new loans for the whole group can be held back.

That pressure keeps repayment rates high, but it also means you take on risk for other people's businesses. Join a group only with women you trust and whose trade you understand.

Route 1: microfinance banks

LAPO Microfinance Bank is the name most market women know, and several other MFBs lend to market traders in groups or individually. LAPO's website did not show product details when we checked in October 2026, so confirm current loan sizes, savings requirements and charges at a branch. For any MFB:

  • Check it appears on the CBN's list of licensed microfinance banks.
  • Ask for the charge on each loan in naira and the total to repay.
  • Ask whether your savings are held as security, and whether they earn anything.
  • Ask how long before you can get a second, larger loan.

Deposits with a licensed MFB are covered by NDIC deposit insurance, reported in March 2026 as ₦2 million per depositor for microfinance banks. That cover does not apply to cash given to an informal collector.

Route 2: market cooperatives

Many markets have trade-based cooperatives: foodstuff sellers, textile traders, provision sellers. Members contribute regularly, much like an ajo or esusu, and borrow from the pool, usually up to a multiple of their savings, at a rate set by members. The cost is often lower than an MFB loan, and decisions are faster because members know each other. The Credit Reporting Act 2017 lists cooperatives among the bodies that can supply credit information to bureaus, so a cooperative loan repaid well can help build a credit record.

The weakness is governance. Ask whether the cooperative is registered with the state cooperative department, whether accounts are presented to members each year, and who signs for withdrawals. A registered cooperative can also borrow from banks on behalf of members; see can a cooperative get a bank loan.

Route 3: state and federal schemes

Several state governments and federal agencies have run funds for women in business, often through MFBs or cooperatives and sometimes at low or zero interest. They open and close, and names change. We could not confirm which state women funds are taking applications in October 2026, so:

Questions to ask before joining a group

  • How long has the group existed, and has any member defaulted before? How was it handled?
  • Are meetings and collections at a time you can attend without closing your stall?
  • What happens to your savings if you want to leave the group?
  • Is every payment recorded in your name with the lender, not only in the group's book?

Worked example: a group loan cycle

An example only. A market woman in a group of 10 saves ₦5,000 a week for 8 weeks (₦40,000), then borrows ₦100,000 repaid at ₦6,000 a week for 20 weeks.

Total repaid
₦120,000
Charge
₦20,000 (20% flat over about five months)
Savings held during the loan
₦40,000
If one member misses two weeks
The group may be asked to cover ₦12,000 between them

The flat 20% looks modest, but because the loan is repaid weekly the real cost on money actually in hand is roughly double. The market trader loans guide shows how to work it out.

What to check first

  1. Confirm the lender is licensed or the cooperative is registered.
  2. Get the total repayment in writing.
  3. Understand exactly what you owe if another member defaults.
  4. Keep every receipt or alert for every contribution.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme does not run group loans. A market woman who wants to save weekly in her own name can use a Savings Box, with Naira deposits held by Solid Allianze MFB, licensed by the CBN and insured by the NDIC up to the applicable limit.

Questions people ask

How can market women get loans in Nigeria?

Through group-lending microfinance banks such as LAPO, market cooperatives, and state or federal schemes for women in business. Each needs a savings record or group membership rather than collateral.

Does LAPO give loans to market women?

LAPO Microfinance Bank is widely known for lending to women traders. Confirm current products, savings rules and charges at a branch; its website did not show them when we checked.

What happens if a member of my loan group does not pay?

In group lending the others may be asked to cover her repayment, and new loans for the group can be held back until it is cleared.

Are there government loans for market women?

Some states and federal agencies run schemes from time to time. Check your state ministry or MSME agency directly and never pay an agent to register you.
