Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Business

Loss leaders: selling one item cheap to sell others

When selling one item below cost brings in profitable baskets for a supermarket or pharmacy, how to cap the loss, and the advertising rules to respect.

The short answer

A loss leader is an item priced at or below cost to bring customers in, on the bet that they buy enough other goods to more than cover the loss. It works only when the item is one customers know the price of, the shop has profitable goods next to it, and the loss is capped by budget, quantity per customer and time; any advertised price must be true and available, as section 123 of the FCCPA 2018 bars misleading price claims.

Supermarkets have long used a cheap staple to bring people through the door. For a smaller shop the same idea can work, but the margin for error is thinner. The difference between a smart promotion and a slow leak of cash is planning the numbers before the sign goes up.

When a loss leader works

  • Customers know the usual price. Sugar, bread, tin milk or a common pain reliever are compared; a cheap price there is noticed.
  • It is bought often. A frequent purchase brings repeat visits.
  • Profitable lines are nearby. The shop sells higher-margin goods the same customer is likely to add.
  • Supply is reliable. You can get enough stock for the promotion period.
  • The basket is real. Your records show customers buying the item usually buy other things too.

When it does not

  • Your regular customers would buy the item anyway, so you simply give away margin.
  • Shoppers 'cherry-pick' the cheap item and leave.
  • Traders buy your stock to resell.
  • The cheap price becomes expected and you cannot raise it again without losing trust.

The numbers: a worked example

Example only. A supermarket normally sells 1kg sugar at ₦2,000; it costs ₦1,800 (₦200 gross profit). For a month it sells at ₦1,700, a loss of ₦100 a unit, and sells 500 units.

EffectWorkingsAmount
Lost margin on regulars (200 units they would have bought at ₦2,000)200 × (₦200 + ₦100)−₦60,000
Loss on units sold to new visitors (300 units)300 × ₦100−₦30,000
Gross profit on other items those 300 visitors buy (₦700 each)300 × ₦700+₦210,000
Net effect+₦120,000

Notice that the biggest cost is not the loss on new visitors but the margin given away to regulars who would have paid full price anyway. The more of your existing customers already buy the item, the harder a loss leader is to justify. The promotion pays because of the ₦700 extra basket profit per new visitor. If new visitors bought only ₦250 of profitable goods each, the gain would be ₦75,000 against ₦90,000 of cost: a loss of ₦15,000. Test the assumption with your till data before and during the promotion. For basket-building ideas, see raising spend per customer.

How to cap the loss

  1. Set a budget. For example ₦50,000 of loss for the month; at ₦100 a unit that is 500 units, then the promotion ends.
  2. Limit per customer. 'Maximum 2 per customer' deters resellers.
  3. Fix the dates. State start and end dates on the sign.
  4. Place it deliberately. Put the item where customers pass profitable lines, not at the door.
  5. Review weekly. Track units sold, average basket and gross profit; stop early if the basket does not grow.

Pharmacies: extra care

A pharmacy can use an everyday non-prescription line, such as a common vitamin or toiletry, as the attraction. Do not use promotions to encourage people to buy medicines they do not need, and never discount expired or near-expiry medicines as a lure. See pricing medicines fairly in a Nigerian pharmacy.

Alternatives that cost less

A loss leader is one way to bring people in. Before using it, compare it with cheaper options that may achieve the same visit without selling below cost.

  • Near-cost pricing. Selling the staple at ₦1,850 (₦50 profit) instead of ₦1,700 may still be the best price nearby while keeping the line profitable.
  • Bundles. Sugar at a small discount only when bought with tea or beverages, which protects margin on the basket.
  • Spend thresholds. The cheap price applies only above a minimum basket, for example ₦10,000.
  • Loyalty rewards. A small reward on the tenth visit keeps regulars without discounting every sale; see getting repeat customers.
  • Supplier-funded promotions. Ask distributors whether they will fund part of a price cut on their brand.

The advertising rules

Section 123(1) of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act 2018 prohibits representations to consumers that are false, misleading in a material respect, or deceptive about matters including price and price comparisons with earlier or competitors' prices. Section 123(2) treats in-store displays and signs as made by the business. In practice:

  • Advertise only a price you will honour, and say if quantities are limited.
  • Any 'was' price must be one you actually charged.
  • Do not claim 'cheapest in town' without evidence.
  • Show conditions such as per-customer limits on the same sign.

This is general information, not legal advice. Also keep an eye on costs: food inflation was 19.59% year on year in September 2026 per NBS figures reported by Voice of Nigeria, so a loss leader priced on last month's cost can lose more than planned if the next delivery costs more.

Where Pryme fits

Supermarkets and pharmacies with a Pryme Business Account can join Spaces, Pryme's merchant ecosystem, where customers with Loans on Spaces can spend. The Sales agent prepares work for a person to approve.

Questions people ask

What is a loss leader?

An item priced at or below cost to attract customers who then buy other, profitable items. The loss on the item is meant to be covered by the extra basket profit.

Is selling below cost legal in Nigeria?

Pricing below cost as a promotion is a common practice, but any advertised price must be true and available. FCCPA 2018 s.123 bars misleading price claims. Take advice on specific cases.

How do I stop customers buying only the cheap item?

Limit quantities per customer, place the item near profitable lines, and set an end date. Track whether average baskets actually grow.

What products make good loss leaders?

Frequently bought items whose price customers know, such as staples, where your shop also sells profitable goods the same customers need.
