Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Loans

Can churches and NGOs get loans in Nigeria?

Registered incorporated trustees can borrow in their own name. What banks ask a church, mosque or NGO for, and the uses lenders usually accept.

The short answer

Yes. A church, mosque or NGO registered with the CAC as incorporated trustees under Part F of CAMA 2020 becomes a corporate body and can deal with a bank in its own name. Banks typically ask for the CAC certificate and constitution, a trustees' resolution authorising the loan, financial statements and evidence of income such as offerings or grant receipts, and often security over property or guarantees from trustees.

Registration comes first

Part F of the Companies and Allied Matters Act 2020 (sections 823 to 850) governs incorporated trustees. As the commentary on the Act notes, trustees can operate without registering, but they cannot take advantage of incorporation unless they are registered; on registration under section 830 they become a corporate body under the CAC's regulation. In practice an unregistered ministry or association has no separate legal personality, so a loan would have to be taken by individuals personally.

Check that the CAC records are current: the names of trustees, the registered address and filings. A bank will search the registry and will not lend if the trustees on the records differ from those signing.

What banks ask for

Requirements vary, and few banks publish a dedicated product for faith or charity organisations. Expect a corporate-style list. Access Bank's business vehicle finance page gives a sense of it: CAC documents, a board resolution, two years of audited or management accounts for larger amounts, a year of statements from other banks, and a personal guarantee with a notarised net worth statement from a director. For trustees, expect the equivalent:

  • CAC certificate of registration and the constitution
  • A resolution of the trustees authorising the borrowing, naming signatories and the amount
  • Audited or management accounts and bank statements showing regular income
  • Evidence of the source of repayment: offerings, tithes, dues, grants, school fees or rents
  • Security: a legal mortgage over property, a charge over equipment, or guarantees from trustees
  • IDs and BVNs of trustees and signatories

Read the constitution before applying. If it limits borrowing or requires members' approval, the bank will expect to see that approval minuted.

Typical uses lenders accept

UseHow lenders tend to see it
Building or completing a hall or school blockUsually secured on the land and building; staged drawdown against progress
Buses and vehiclesAsset finance, with the vehicle as security and an equity contribution
Generators, solar and sound equipmentAsset finance over shorter terms
Bridging a grant that is approved but not yet paidShort-term, repaid from the grant; lenders want the grant letter
Day-to-day running costsHardest to fund; lenders prefer reserves for this

Organisations that run schools, clinics or guest houses have an advantage: those activities produce fees a bank can measure, and the lender may take a charge over that income.

Governance a lender will look at

Lending to a membership body carries a particular risk for the bank: leadership can change, and the people who signed may not be the people who repay. Credit officers therefore look closely at how decisions are made.

  • Who can sign for the organisation, and whether two signatories are required on the account
  • Whether the resolution to borrow was passed at a properly called meeting, with minutes
  • Whether the accounts are prepared by someone independent of the person who handles cash
  • Whether there is any dispute among trustees or members; section 839 of CAMA 2020 deals with the suspension of trustees, and commentary notes the CAC's power there is subject to the courts and conditions

Clean governance is often what turns a hesitant lender into a willing one. If your records are untidy, fix them before applying.

Alternatives to a bank loan

Many congregations and associations fund projects through a building fund, member pledges collected over a set period, or phased construction that stops when money runs out and restarts when it comes in. These avoid interest entirely. A loan makes sense when delay costs more than the interest, for example when a school block must be ready for a new session.

Grants and donor money: a caution

NGOs funded by donors should check grant agreements before borrowing. Many restrict pledging grant funds or assets bought with them. Using restricted money to repay a loan can breach the grant terms. Keep borrowed funds and grant funds in separate accounts; our guide to virtual accounts shows one way to keep them apart.

A worked example

Example only. A church with average offerings of ₦2,400,000 a month and running costs of ₦1,700,000 wants a ₦9,000,000 bus. It pays ₦1,800,000 itself (20%) and borrows ₦7,200,000 over 36 months. At 2.5% a month on a reducing balance, the repayment is about ₦305,700 a month, total about ₦11,003,000. That takes about 44% of the ₦700,000 monthly surplus. The trustees decide that leaves enough buffer, minute the decision and attach the cash-flow to the application.

Steps for trustees

  1. Confirm CAC registration and that the trustees on record are correct.
  2. Check the constitution's borrowing rules and hold the required meeting.
  3. Prepare a year of statements and accounts, ideally audited.
  4. Set out the repayment source and a monthly cash-flow.
  5. Ask two banks or microfinance banks for written terms, including fees and security.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme does not lend to churches or NGOs. A registered organisation can open a Pryme Business Account to receive offerings, dues and donations in NGN, USD, GBP or EUR, use virtual accounts to separate funds, and keep actions recorded through its Finance agent, which prepares work that a person approves. See also bank business loan requirements.

Questions people ask

Can a church take a bank loan in Nigeria?

Yes, if it is registered as incorporated trustees with the CAC. The bank will want the constitution, a trustees' resolution, accounts and usually security.

Can an unregistered NGO get a loan?

Not in its own name. Without CAC registration as incorporated trustees it has no separate legal personality, so any loan would be personal to the individuals.

What documents does a bank need for a church loan?

Typically the CAC certificate and constitution, a trustees' resolution, financial statements, bank statements, trustees' IDs and BVNs, and security documents.

Can an NGO use grant money to repay a loan?

Only if the grant agreement allows it. Many grants restrict this, so check the terms before borrowing.
