Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Loans

Loan against your fixed deposit: how Nigerian banks do it

How cash-backed loans against a fixed deposit work in Nigeria: the lien, how much you can borrow, how the rate is set and when it beats breaking it.

The short answer

A fixed deposit loan is a cash-backed facility: the bank places a lien on your deposit and lends you a share of it, usually at the deposit rate plus a margin, while the deposit keeps earning to maturity. Because the bank's risk is covered by your own cash, the price tends to sit far below unsecured lending; CBN data for August 2026 show an average 12-month deposit rate of 10.30% against an average maximum lending rate of 29.20%. It often costs less than breaking the deposit early, but only if the spread is smaller than the interest you would lose.

You booked a fixed deposit for a year, and three months in you need money. Breaking the deposit may mean giving up some or all of the interest. Most banks offer another route: borrow against it. This guide explains how it works, how to price it and when it is the better choice.

How a cash-backed loan works

  1. You ask your bank for a loan, overdraft or card secured on your fixed deposit.
  2. The bank places a lien on the deposit: the money stays in your name and keeps earning, but you cannot withdraw it until the loan is repaid.
  3. The bank lends you a percentage of the deposit, set by its policy, so that the deposit covers the loan plus interest.
  4. You repay as agreed. At maturity, if the loan is still open, the bank can apply the deposit to clear it under the set-off clause in your offer letter.
  5. When the loan is repaid, the lien is lifted and the deposit is yours again.

Banks use the same idea for cards. Access Bank's Visa Credit Card page, for example, lists cash, short-term investments and salary as collateral options (as at Oct 2026).

How much you can borrow

Banks do not lend the full deposit as a rule. They hold back a margin so that the deposit still covers the debt once interest has built up. The percentage is set by each bank's credit policy and is stated in the offer; ask for it in writing. Because the loan is secured by your own cash, banks usually ask for less documentation than for an unsecured loan: ID, BVN, the deposit certificate or reference, a signed offer letter and a letter of lien or set-off.

How the rate is set

Cash-backed loans are usually priced as the rate you earn on the deposit plus a spread, or as a fixed rate the bank sets for the product. The spread pays the bank's costs and margin; it is small because the bank carries little credit risk. For context, the CBN's Money Market Indicators show these averages for August 2026:

Average rate (August 2026)Level
Savings deposit rate7.46%
12-month deposit rate10.30%
Prime lending rate17.86%
Maximum lending rate29.20%
Monetary Policy Rate (MPR)26.50%

Source: CBN Money Market Indicators. These are averages across banks, not any one bank's price. The MPC cut the MPR to 23% at its September 2026 meeting, so later months will differ; check the CBN page for the latest month.

Worked example: borrow or break?

Example only, with illustrative terms. You have ₦2,000,000 in a 12-month fixed deposit at 12% a year, booked six months ago. You need ₦1,500,000 for the remaining six months until a bonus arrives. Your deposit terms say early liquidation forfeits all interest.

Break the depositBorrow against it
Interest earned on deposit₦0 (forfeited)₦240,000 (full year)
Loan interest at 16% a year for 6 months on ₦1,500,000None₦120,000
Management fee at 1%None₦15,000
Net result₦0₦105,000 better off

Borrowing wins here by ₦105,000 because the spread is small and the forfeited interest would be large. If your deposit terms only cut the rate slightly on early liquidation, or the loan rate is high, breaking may be cheaper. Run both columns with your bank's real figures. Under the CBN Guide to Charges (effective 1 January 2020), the management fee is capped at 1% of principal.

Why it protects your deposit interest

The deposit interest is earned on the full balance for the full term, while the loan interest is paid only on what you borrow and only for as long as you borrow it. That asymmetry is what makes the product useful: a short loan on part of the deposit costs little, while breaking the deposit early can cost the whole term's interest.

Risks and what to check first

  • Rollover. If the deposit is set to roll over automatically, the lien moves with it. Make sure the loan's end date and the deposit's maturity line up.
  • Rate changes. If the loan is variable and the deposit is fixed, the spread can widen. The CBN guide requires banks to give 10 business days' notice of a new rate.
  • Set-off. Missing repayments lets the bank apply the deposit. That clears the debt but can also forfeit the deposit's interest.
  • Deposit insurance. NDIC cover for deposit money banks is ₦5,000,000 per depositor and ₦2,000,000 at microfinance banks, according to a March 2026 report; it protects your deposit, not the loan.

If you are choosing where to save in the first place, see fixed deposit vs savings account, and for unsecured options, term loan vs overdraft vs revolving credit.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme Savings Boxes are Naira only and include a Fixed Box held to its date; rates are shown in the app. A Fixed Box suits money with a known date; keeping a separate Flexible Box for emergencies reduces the chance you need to break or borrow against fixed savings. See Savings Boxes.

Questions people ask

Can I take a loan against my fixed deposit in Nigeria?

Yes, most banks offer cash-backed loans or overdrafts secured by a lien on your fixed deposit. The deposit keeps earning while the loan is open.

How much can I borrow against my fixed deposit?

A percentage of the deposit set by your bank's credit policy, so that the deposit covers the loan and interest. The offer letter states it.

Is it better to break my fixed deposit or take a loan?

Compare the interest you would lose by breaking it with the loan's interest and fees. If the loss is bigger, borrowing is usually cheaper.

What happens if I cannot repay a loan against my fixed deposit?

The bank can apply the deposit to clear the debt under the set-off terms in your offer letter.
