Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

LLC for a freelancer with Nigerian clients: worth it?

What a single-member LLC changes for a US freelancer with Nigerian clients: liability, banking, tax treatment and state costs, and what it does not.

The short answer

A single-member LLC can separate business debts and contracts from your personal assets and gives Nigerian clients a company name to pay, but by default the IRS disregards it: you still report on Schedule C and pay 15.3% self-employment tax. Whether it is worth it depends on contract risk and state cost, which ranges from $100 to form plus $50 a year in Georgia to an $800 annual tax in California.

Nigerian clients often ask for a company to contract with, and Nigerian procurement teams may prefer paying a business to an individual. That pushes many US freelancers towards forming an LLC. It can help, but it changes less than people expect. Here is what changes and what does not, from IRS and state sources. This is information, not legal or tax advice.

Liability: what an LLC protects and what it does not

An LLC is a separate legal entity. Contracts signed in the LLC's name, and debts the LLC incurs, generally sit with the LLC rather than with you personally, provided you keep it separate: its own bank account, contracts in its name, no mixing of personal spending. It generally does not protect you from your own professional errors, and a client can still pursue you personally for your own negligence. For that, professional liability insurance and a well-drafted contract do more work than the entity; see contract points for Nigerian clients.

With Nigerian clients the larger practical risk is non-payment rather than being sued. An LLC does not make an unpaid invoice easier to collect in Nigeria.

Tax: usually unchanged

  • The IRS single-member LLC page (reviewed 27 July 2026) says a single-member LLC is disregarded by default: you report on Schedule C as a sole proprietor.
  • Self-employment tax is the same: 15.3% (12.4% Social Security plus 2.9% Medicare) on net earnings of $400 or more, per the IRS self-employment tax page.
  • The LLC needs its own EIN if it has employees, and it is treated as separate for employment and some excise taxes.
  • It can elect to be taxed as a corporation on Form 8832, or as an S corporation, which changes how you pay yourself. That is a separate decision with its own costs and is covered in LLC or corporation for an immigrant founder.

Banking and getting paid

An LLC lets you open a business account in the company's name and invoice from it. Nigerian clients see a company name on the invoice and pay it, which some finance teams prefer. If a Nigerian client deducts withholding tax, it will deduct from the payment to your LLC just as it would to you, and issue a receipt in the LLC's name. Because a single-member LLC is disregarded by default, the income lands on your own return, and the withholding receipt is the paper your preparer will ask for if you claim a foreign tax credit.

Business accounts for new LLCs ask for formation documents, the EIN and owner identification; see opening a US business bank account for a new LLC.

What it costs, by state (examples)

StateFormationOngoingSource
Georgia$100 articles$50 annual registration (late penalty $25)Georgia Code 14-11-1101 (2025)
CaliforniaSOS filing fee (not checked here)$800 annual LLC tax even with no business; plus a fee once California income reaches $250,000California FTB

New York$200 articles; publication in two newspapers within 120 daysBiennial statement (fee not checked)NY LLC Law s206, s1101

FinCEN's beneficial ownership page (updated 11 August 2026) says US-formed companies are now exempt from BOI reporting, so that cost has gone for a domestic LLC.

Worked example (illustration only)

Freelancer
Atlanta-based developer, $70,000 a year from two Lagos fintech clients
Georgia LLC cost
$100 to form, then $50 a year, plus any registered agent fee if you do not act yourself
Tax change
None by default; still Schedule C and self-employment tax
What changes
Contracts and the business account in the LLC's name; cleaner separation; client invoices from a company
Same freelancer in California
At least $800 a year in LLC tax, which may outweigh the benefits for a one-person service business

When it is worth it, and when it is not

  1. Worth considering if you sign larger contracts, take on deliverables with real liability, hire subcontractors, or clients require a company counterparty.
  2. Less useful if your risk is mainly unpaid invoices, your income is modest, and your state charges heavily.
  3. Check visa terms first if you are not a green card holder or citizen: owning an LLC and working in it are different questions. See can a Nigerian on H-1B own an LLC.
  4. Whatever you choose, separate accounts and written contracts do more for you than the entity alone.

What does not change with an LLC

  • Nigerian withholding tax: the client still deducts it where it applies and issues the receipt to the payee named on the invoice.
  • Estimated tax: you still pay quarterly as an individual, because the LLC's profit is on your own return.
  • Your visa terms: forming a company does not authorise work your status does not allow.
  • Collection: enforcing an unpaid invoice against a Nigerian company is no easier for an LLC than for you personally.
  • Foreign account reporting: if you hold naira or dom accounts in Nigeria, FBAR and Form 8938 questions are the same as before.

Think of the LLC as a container for contracts and liability, not as a tax or immigration tool. If one of those is the reason you want it, take advice on that point first.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Business Account can be opened from the US for your business and holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR with local details for each, so a Lagos client can pay naira by local transfer and a US client can pay dollars. Invoicing and the Compliance agent help keep the separation an LLC depends on; the agents prepare and you approve.

Questions people ask

Does an LLC reduce my taxes as a freelancer?

Not by default. The IRS treats a single-member LLC as disregarded, so you still file Schedule C and pay self-employment tax unless you elect corporate or S corporation treatment.

Will Nigerian clients pay an LLC more easily?

Some finance teams prefer paying a company. It does not change Nigerian withholding tax, which they will still deduct where it applies.

Do I need to file a BOI report for my LLC?

FinCEN's page updated in August 2026 says US-formed companies are exempt from BOI reporting.

How much does an LLC cost in Georgia?

Georgia's code sets $100 for articles and $50 for each annual registration, with a $25 late penalty.
