Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2018OjirehPrime Card

2023Multicurrency

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Lending money to friends in the community abroad: safeguards

A loan to a friend, church member or fellow Nigerian abroad is still a loan. Written terms, a clean paper trail and realistic recovery options, in order.

The short answer

Treat a loan to a friend in the community as a loan: agree the amount, repayment dates and what happens if a payment is missed, put it in a short signed note, and send the money by bank transfer, never cash. Those three steps give you evidence if you later need a small claims court where you live, which is usually the realistic recovery route; chasing someone who has moved back to Nigeria is slower and costs more. Only lend what you could afford to lose.

Why community loans go wrong

Lending inside a close community runs on trust, which is its strength and its weakness. Most disputes are not about fraud; they are about memory. One person remembers ₦1.5 million as a gift towards a burial; the other remembers it as a loan to be repaid after the next contract. Without anything in writing, both are sincere and neither can prove their version. A second problem is pressure: requests often come in a crisis, with no time to think. The FTC warns that scammers posing as family or friends now use cloned voices to ask for urgent money, and that real family would not pressure you to wire money or buy gift cards.

Before you lend: four questions

  • Could I live without this money if it never comes back?
  • Is this a loan or a gift? Decide, and say it out loud.
  • What exactly will the money be used for, and when will I be repaid?
  • If repayment stops, would I take this person to court? If not, the paperwork is still worth doing, because it settles arguments before they start.

Put it in writing

A loan between friends does not need a lawyer. A one-page note signed by both of you is far better than nothing. Include:

  1. Both full names, addresses and phone numbers.
  2. The amount and currency, and the date it was sent.
  3. Repayment: instalments, dates and the account to pay into.
  4. Whether interest is charged. Most community loans charge none; say so.
  5. What happens if a payment is missed, for example a short grace period and then the whole balance falling due.
  6. Signatures and dates from both parties, ideally with a witness.

Keep any fixed late charge modest. A BusinessDay commentary on Nigerian contract law explains that a sum agreed in advance as a genuine estimate of loss can be enforced, but a figure designed to punish is treated as a penalty and is not enforceable as written. Courts in many other countries apply a similar idea. For a fuller checklist written for Nigerian borrowers and lenders, see personal loan agreement checklist.

Keep a clean paper trail

  • Send by bank transfer from your account to theirs, with a reference such as “Loan to [name], 10 instalments”. Cash leaves no record.
  • Ask for repayments by transfer too, with the same reference.
  • Keep the messages in which the loan was asked for and agreed. Screenshots with dates are useful evidence.
  • Keep a simple ledger: date, amount paid, balance left. Share it with the borrower every few months.

If repayments stop

  1. Talk first. Ask what has changed and whether a smaller instalment would work. Confirm any new plan in writing.
  2. Send a written demand: the amount owed, the agreement date, and a deadline to pay.
  3. Consider mediation through a community leader, church or association both of you respect.
  4. Use the courts where you both live. Most countries have a small claims procedure for modest debts that does not need a lawyer; check the court service's own pages for limits and fees.

If the borrower has moved to Nigeria, things get harder. A Global Legal Post guide by Streamsowers & Köhn explains that foreign money judgments can be registered in Nigeria under the reciprocal enforcement laws, generally within 12 months of the judgment, and lists grounds on which registration can be refused. That means a foreign judgment is not useless, but it adds a second legal process and cost. For the reverse situation, see can a Nigerian lender pursue a debt abroad.

Worked example: a written plan

Example only. Ada lends Tunde £1,200 for a deposit on a flat. They agree ten monthly repayments of £120, starting on the 1st of the month after next, by bank transfer with the reference “Loan Ada 1 of 10” and so on. No interest. If a payment is more than 14 days late and not discussed, the remaining balance becomes due. After four payments (£480), Tunde loses shifts and asks to pay £60 a month. Ada agrees by message and updates the ledger: £720 left, now 12 payments of £60. Because the change is in writing, there is no later dispute over whether the original plan still applies.

Better alternatives to a large loan

  • Give a smaller amount as a gift you will not chase.
  • Pay a bill or fee directly to the school, hospital or landlord instead of handing over cash.
  • Point the person to a regulated lender, or to a community savings group with clear rules.
  • Keep your own emergency fund intact first.

Where Pryme fits

If the loan is for someone in Nigeria, paying directly from a Pryme account with Send gives you a dated record of every transfer, and you can generate a regular or verifiable receipt through our partner VerifyDoc.ai; see receipts and statements.

Questions people ask

Do I need a lawyer to lend money to a friend?

No. A short note signed by both of you with the amount, repayment dates and what happens if a payment is missed is enough for most community loans.

Is a WhatsApp message proof of a loan?

Dated messages showing the request and agreement are useful evidence, especially with a bank transfer record. A signed note is stronger.

How do I get money back from a friend who refuses to pay abroad?

Send a written demand, try mediation, and then use the small claims procedure in the country where they live. Check the court service's own pages for limits and fees.

Can I enforce a UK or US judgment against someone who moved to Nigeria?

Possibly. Foreign money judgments can be registered in Nigeria under reciprocal enforcement laws, generally within 12 months, but it is a second process with its own costs.
