Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Canada

Is there a legal limit on sending money from Canada to Nigeria?

Canadian law sets no cap on how much you can send to Nigeria. What changes at $10,000 is reporting, and each provider sets its own limits on top.

The short answer

No Canadian law caps how much money you can send to Nigeria. At $10,000 or more in one international transfer, or in two or more that total $10,000 within 24 hours, your bank or money transfer company must report it to FINTRAC, which is a report, not a ban. The limits you actually meet are the provider's own, which depend on verification, payment method and delivery method.

The short answer: reporting, not a ceiling

People often hear that you "cannot send more than $10,000" out of Canada. That is a misreading. Canada's proceeds-of-crime rules require banks, credit unions and money services businesses to report certain transfers to FINTRAC, the federal financial intelligence unit. They do not cap the amount a person may send. A transfer of $40,000 to buy land in Abuja is legal if the money is yours and the purpose is lawful; it simply generates a report and, usually, questions.

What FINTRAC's $10,000 rule says

FINTRAC's guidance on electronic funds transfer (EFT) reporting, last modified on 24 June 2024, says financial entities and money services businesses report international EFTs of $10,000 or more in a single transaction. Foreign currency is converted at the Bank of Canada rate in effect. For outgoing transfers, the report falls on the first reporting entity that initiates the payment.

  • The 24-hour rule. Two or more international transfers that total $10,000 or more within a static 24-hour window, for the same requester or beneficiary, are reported together.
  • Timing. The report is due within five business days.
  • Content. It includes the requester's name, date of birth, address, occupation, phone number and ID details. FINTRAC says the SIN must not be reported.
  • Who files. Your bank or app files it. You do not fill in any form yourself.

Splitting a large amount into smaller transfers to stay under $10,000 does not avoid the report because of the 24-hour rule, and it is itself a warning sign: FINTRAC's indicators for money services businesses list a client who "appears to be structuring amounts to avoid client identification or reporting thresholds".

Cash you carry is different

If you physically take money out of Canada, the Canada Border Services Agency rule applies. CBSA memorandum D19-14-1 says currency and monetary instruments of CAD 10,000 or more (or the foreign equivalent) must be reported when you import or export them. Unreported currency can be seized. Again, this is a declaration, not a limit. Nigeria has its own arrival rule: reporting on the CBN's 2026 FX Manual says foreign cash above $10,000 must be declared on entry. Our guide to carrying cash from Canada to Nigeria covers both sides.

The limits you will actually meet

Limits in practice come from the provider. Remitly's Canada-to-Nigeria page, for example, says sending limits vary by where you send from, whether your identity has been verified, the delivery method and the destination. Banks set daily online limits for international transfers that you can often raise by phone or at a branch. Card-funded transfers can also run into your card's own limit.

Type of limitWho sets itHow to move it
Per-transfer or daily cap in an appThe appComplete full ID verification; ask support
Online banking international limitYour bankRequest an increase, or send at a branch
Card limit when funding by cardYour card issuerFund by bank transfer instead
Cash payout cap in NigeriaCBN rulesPay into a bank account instead

On the Nigerian side, the CBN caps cash withdrawal of inbound money-transfer proceeds. TheCable's report of the CBN's January 2024 circular said transfers above the naira equivalent of $200 must go to a bank account rather than cash, and Mondaq's summary of the 2026 FX Manual repeats the $200 cash cap. Large amounts therefore go to an account.

Steps for a large transfer

  1. Check the provider's current limit in the app or on its own help page before you start.
  2. Have your source-of-funds evidence ready: payslips, a sale agreement, a savings statement. See what a source-of-funds request asks for.
  3. Have the purpose ready in plain words, such as "deposit on land, Lekki" or "father's hospital bill".
  4. Send to an account in the receiver's own name, and keep every receipt.
  5. If you are moving a large sum in stages, tell the provider; do not cut amounts to sit under $10,000.

Common misunderstandings

  • "I need permission to send more than $10,000." No. Nothing in FINTRAC's EFT guidance requires you to apply for anything; the reporting duty sits with your bank or app.
  • "A report means I am under suspicion." No. Every international transfer of $10,000 or more is reported under the same rule, whoever sends it. Suspicious transaction reports are a separate process with no threshold.
  • "Several small transfers keep me under the radar." They do not, because of the 24-hour rule, and they can draw the very attention you were trying to avoid.
  • "The receiver in Nigeria will be reported in Canada." The Canadian report describes the transfer, including the beneficiary details your provider holds, but it is made in Canada about a Canadian transaction.

If you are moving money for a big purchase, such as land or a car, plan the timing with your provider before the deadline in Nigeria. Questions take a day or two to answer, and having documents ready is the single thing that speeds a large transfer up.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme account, opened from Canada, holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR with local details for each. When you send to Nigeria the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve, and any limit that applies to your account is shown there too. Outside Nigeria, Pryme's activities are carried out through regulated partners. For a larger family plan, see sending a large amount from Canada to Nigeria.

Questions people ask

Can I send $50,000 from Canada to Nigeria?

Yes, Canadian law sets no cap. Your bank or app will report a transfer of $10,000 or more to FINTRAC, may ask where the money came from, and its own transfer limit may mean using a branch or a wire.

Will FINTRAC tell me my transfer was reported?

You do not file anything and the report is between your bank or app and FINTRAC. A report is routine for transfers of this size and is not an accusation.

Is splitting a transfer into smaller amounts illegal?

Sending several smaller amounts is not illegal in itself, but transfers totalling $10,000 within 24 hours are reported together, and splitting to avoid reporting is a recognised warning sign that can lead to a review.

Does Nigeria limit how much I can receive?

Inbound money-transfer proceeds above the naira equivalent of $200 must be paid into a bank account rather than cash, according to reports of CBN rules. Account tier limits on the receiver's account can also apply.
