Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Client money rules for Nigerian law firms

What the Rules of Professional Conduct say about client money, why law firms must register with SCUML, and the ledgers that keep a firm safe.

The short answer

Nigerian lawyers must promptly account for client money and must not mix it with their own funds or use it as their own; rule 23(2) of the Rules of Professional Conduct 2007 says so, and new Rules commenced on 1 January 2024. Law firms are also listed with SCUML as designated non-financial businesses, with duties to record and report large and cash transactions. In practice, that means a separate client account and a ledger for every client.

Most disciplinary cases against lawyers over money begin with the same facts: a client's money was paid into the firm's ordinary account, used to meet chambers expenses, and was not there when the client asked for it. The rules are not complicated, but they have to be built into how the firm banks and keeps records.

What the professional rules say

Rule 23(2) of the Rules of Professional Conduct for Legal Practitioners 2007 requires a lawyer to promptly report and account for any money or property received for a client, and not to commingle it with the lawyer's own funds or use it as the lawyer's own. The 2007 text does not set out a detailed procedure for a separate account.

The Rules of Professional Conduct for Legal Practitioners 2023 (S.I. 32 of 2023), made by the General Council of the Bar, were published in June 2023 and commenced on 1 January 2024, according to the legislation record on judy.legal. We could not read the full client-money wording of the 2023 Rules, so check the current text with the NBA or your branch before relying on any detail. The duty not to mix client money with your own, and to account for it promptly, should be the minimum you work to.

SCUML duties for law firms

The Special Control Unit against Money Laundering (SCUML), part of the EFCC, lists law firms among designated non-financial businesses and professions in its Registration Guideline. Registration is online through the SCUML portal only, and SCUML says registration and certification are free; third-party agents are not authorised. For law firms, the guideline asks for evidence such as call to bar and practising certificates alongside CAC and Tax ID documents.

SCUML's compliance checklist sets out continuing duties, including:

  • Client payments above ₦5,000,000 for an individual or ₦10,000,000 for a company to go through financial institutions.
  • Occasional cash transactions above $1,000 to be recorded and reported to SCUML.
  • Threshold transactions above those naira amounts to be reported within seven days.
  • Suspicious transaction reports to be filed promptly with the NFIU.
  • Records to be kept for at least five years.
  • Beneficial ownership information through the CAC register.

The checklist attaches penalties to unreported transactions. This is information, not legal advice; read the checklist itself for the current wording.

How to run client money in practice

  1. Open a separate client account in the firm's name, clearly designated as a client account, and never pay chambers expenses from it.
  2. Keep a ledger for each client and matter: every receipt, every payment out, and the running balance.
  3. Never let a client ledger go negative. Paying one client's money out on behalf of another is using client money.
  4. Transfer fees only against a bill the client has received, and record the transfer on both ledgers.
  5. Reconcile monthly: bank balance of the client account, total of all client ledgers and the cash book should agree. This is often called a three-way reconciliation.
  6. Pay out promptly when a matter ends or a judgment sum is received, with a written statement to the client.

Warning signs in a firm's books

  • Client money and office money in the same account
  • Client ledgers that are not updated until the end of the month, or not at all
  • A ledger showing a payment out before the client's money arrived
  • Fees taken from client money without a bill being sent
  • Old balances for clients who cannot be traced, sitting untouched for years
  • Cash received from clients with no receipt and no record of who paid

Any one of these is a reason to stop and fix the process. Unclaimed balances in particular need a written trail of attempts to reach the client; they do not become the firm's money because time has passed.

Worked example (labelled example)

DateEntryClient A ledger (₦)Client B ledger (₦)
3 MarClient A deposits for land purchase+8,000,0000
5 MarClient B pays judgment sum received0+1,500,000
10 MarPay vendor for Client A−7,500,0000
12 MarFees transferred against bill, Client A−300,0000
Balance200,0001,500,000

The client account bank balance must equal ₦1,700,000, the total of both ledgers. If the bank shows less, client money has been used and must be restored at once. Client A's ₦8,000,000 deposit is above SCUML's ₦5,000,000 individual threshold, so it came by bank transfer and the firm checks whether a threshold report is due.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Business Account can run several accounts, so client money can sit apart from office money, and the Compliance agent can flag transactions above set amounts for a person to review. For fee notes and WHT, see billing legal fees; for matching transfers, payment reconciliation.

Questions people ask

Can a lawyer keep client money in the firm's main account?

The Rules of Professional Conduct forbid mixing client money with the lawyer's own funds or using it as their own. A separate client account with a ledger per client is the practical way to comply.

Do law firms need SCUML registration?

Yes. SCUML lists law firms among designated non-financial businesses. Registration is online at the SCUML portal and SCUML says it is free.

Which Rules of Professional Conduct apply now?

The Rules of Professional Conduct for Legal Practitioners 2023 commenced on 1 January 2024. Check the current client-money wording with the NBA.

How long should a law firm keep client money records?

SCUML's compliance checklist requires records for at least five years; tax law requires business records for at least six years.
