Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2016E-commerce

An online grocery store, built out of a faulty tab. Selling the food was the easy part — taking the money for it, and moving it, turned out to be the business.

2018OjirehPrime Card

A prepaid card. The first time the company issued rather than resold, and the first time it carried the obligations that come with holding somebody else’s money.

2020Microfinance bank

PrymeSolid Allianze acquired — an existing bank with an existing licence. The perimeter stopped being someone else’s to draw.

2023Multicurrency

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.

2026Agentic operations

Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Australia

A Nigerian client has not paid me: options from Australia

Steps for an Australian freelancer owed money in Nigeria: reminders, deposits, a demand letter, Lagos small claims, arbitration and enforcement limits.

The short answer

Work in stages: confirm the invoice and any tax deduction, send dated reminders, then a formal demand with a deadline. If the client is in Lagos and the debt is ₦5,000,000 or less, the Lagos Small Claims Court can hear it after a 14-day letter of demand on Form SCA 1, with a target of judgment within 60 days of filing. Larger debts need a Nigerian lawyer, and an Australian judgment is hard to enforce in Nigeria unless the contract planned for it.

Late payment from a Nigerian client is often a currency problem rather than a refusal: the money is ready in naira but the dollars are not, or the finance team deducted withholding tax and thinks the job is settled. From Australia, distance and time zones make it worse. Below are the options in order, from the cheapest to the most formal.

First, rule out the simple causes

  • Did the right person receive the invoice, with a purchase order number if they use them?
  • Did the client deduct Nigerian withholding tax? PwC's summary of the 2024 regulations gives 10% for non-residents' professional and consultancy fees. A 10% shortfall with a receipt is a tax question, not a debt.
  • Is the client struggling to buy foreign currency? Under the CBN's 2026 FX Manual, as TheCable reported, deals between Nigerian entities are priced and settled in naira; paying you in USD or AUD means buying currency through a bank. An agreed date, part-payment or payment in naira may solve it.

Reminders and a formal demand

Send a short, dated reminder the day after the due date, then a second a week later. Australian mornings are Nigerian late evenings, so schedule emails for Lagos office hours and follow up by phone or WhatsApp, confirming any promise in writing. If both go unanswered, send a formal letter of demand naming the contract, listing the invoices, stating the total and a deadline, and saying what you will do next.

Lagos Small Claims Court

The Lagos State Practice Direction on Small Claims Court 2023 covers liquidated money demands of up to ₦5,000,000, excluding interest and costs, where the claimant or defendant lives or does business in Lagos or the claim arose wholly or partly there.

StageWhat the practice direction says
Before filingServe a letter of demand on Form SCA 1, giving 14 days to pay
FilingComplaint Form SCA 2 at the Small Claims Registry; the fee is not stated in the document
ServiceThe sheriff serves within 7 days
HearingConcluded within 30 days
JudgmentWithin 14 days of the hearing; target of 60 days from filing to judgment
RepresentationParties may represent themselves

The document does not say whether a claimant living abroad can file through an agent or under a power of attorney, so confirm with the registry or a Lagos lawyer. A debt invoiced in AUD or USD would need to be stated in naira to fit the limit; ask the registry how they treat it. For clients outside Lagos, other states' small claims limits were not confirmed on the pages we checked.

Larger debts, arbitration and Australian courts

Above ₦5,000,000, or outside Lagos, you are in the regular Nigerian courts with a Nigerian lawyer. If your contract has an arbitration clause, an award from a New York Convention country can be enforced in Nigeria under the Arbitration and Mediation Act 2023, according to Streamsowers & Köhn's April 2026 guide on Global Legal Post. A foreign court judgment must be registered in Nigeria under the reciprocal enforcement laws, generally within 12 months, and the guide does not list which countries qualify. Before suing in Australia, ask a lawyer whether an Australian judgment could be registered in Nigeria at all. See which law applies to your contract.

What it might cost to chase

Weigh the debt against the cost of recovering it. The small claims practice direction allows self-representation and does not state its filing fee, so ask the registry; a lawyer's fee for regular court proceedings will usually be a larger share of a small debt. Exchange-rate movement during a long dispute also matters if the debt is in naira. For many freelancers, a firm demand and an offer to accept instalments recovers more, sooner, than litigation.

Keep everything in writing: the contract, each invoice and the email that sent it, every reminder and reply, call notes, and bank statements showing what did and did not arrive. Those records are what a registry, mediator or lawyer will ask for first.

Preventing the next one

  1. Take a deposit before starting, especially with a new client.
  2. Split larger jobs into milestones, and do not release the next stage until the last is paid.
  3. Agree the currency, the payment date and who bears withholding tax in the contract.
  4. Hold back final files or source code until the last payment clears.

Example only. Kemi, a developer in Brisbane, quotes ₦6,000,000 for an app in three milestones of ₦2,000,000. If the client stops paying after milestone two, her exposure is one milestone, ₦2,000,000, which sits within the Lagos small claims limit.

Where Pryme fits

Clear records help when a debt is disputed. Invoicing keeps a dated history of what you billed and what arrived, the Finance agent can draft reminders for you to approve, and a Pryme Business Account gives a Nigerian client naira account details, which removes the currency excuse.

Questions people ask

Can I take a Nigerian client to court from Australia?

You can file in Nigeria, for example in the Lagos Small Claims Court for debts up to ₦5,000,000, but check with the registry whether you can act from abroad. Suing in Australia raises the question of enforcing the judgment in Nigeria.

How long does the Lagos small claims process take?

The 2023 practice direction targets judgment within 60 days of filing, after a 14-day letter of demand.

My client paid 10% less. Is that a debt?

Possibly not: Nigerian companies often deduct withholding tax from non-residents' fees. Ask for the withholding tax receipt.

Is arbitration worth adding to my contract?

For larger contracts it can help, because awards from New York Convention countries can be enforced in Nigeria under the Arbitration and Mediation Act 2023. Take legal advice on the clause.
