Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Banking how-tos

Intrabank vs interbank transfer in Nigeria: speed and fees

Sending to the same bank is usually free and instant; sending to another bank uses NIP and a fee band. What each costs and when stamp duty applies.

The short answer

An intrabank transfer moves money between two accounts at the same bank; an interbank transfer goes to a different bank, usually through NIBSS Instant Payments. Intrabank transfers are often free (UBA and Zenith publish them as free on digital channels), while interbank transfers carry a fee: the CBN's 2020 Guide to Charges sets ₦10 below ₦5,000, ₦25 from ₦5,001 to ₦50,000 and ₦50 above. The ₦50 stamp duty on ₦10,000 or more applies to both, except between your own accounts at the same bank.

Every Nigerian transfer is either within one bank or between two. The difference used to mean hours versus days. Today both are usually instant, but the cost and the stamp duty treatment still differ, and the gap is worth knowing if you make many payments.

How each one moves

Intrabank (same bank)
The bank debits one customer and credits another on its own books. No outside switch is needed, so it is typically immediate.
Interbank (different banks)
The sending bank passes the payment through a national switch, almost always NIP for app and USSD transfers. NIP runs 24/7 and is usually completed in seconds, but it depends on both banks' systems being up.

Because interbank transfers involve two banks and a switch, they are the ones more likely to show as pending or fail with money debited. See transfer pending but not credited for what to do.

Fees: the CBN bands and what banks publish

The CBN Guide to Charges (effective 1 January 2020) sets the ceiling for electronic transfers to other banks. Banks add 7.5% VAT on the fee.

Amount sent to another bankCBN 2020 maximum feeWith 7.5% VAT
Up to ₦5,000₦10₦10.75
₦5,001 to ₦50,000₦25₦26.88
Above ₦50,000₦50₦53.75

As at September 2026, UBA's published Service Charges and Rates follows these bands for app and internet banking transfers to other banks and lists UBA-to-UBA transfers on the app, Leo chat and internet banking as free. Zenith Bank's FAQ says Zenith-to-Zenith transfers are free. Banks can charge less than the ceiling, and some fintechs give a number of free interbank transfers a month, so check your own app.

Stamp duty on both

From 1 January 2026, the ₦50 stamp duty on electronic transfers of ₦10,000 or more is paid by the sender, whether the recipient is at the same bank or another. The published exemption for transfers between your own accounts covers only accounts at the same institution, and Moniepoint, for instance, limits it to its own accounts sharing one BVN. Full detail: EMTL and the ₦50 stamp duty.

Worked example: three payments compared

Example only, using the CBN 2020 bands with VAT and assuming the bank charges the full ceiling and nothing for same-bank transfers.

PaymentIntrabank costInterbank cost
₦4,000 to a friend₦0₦10.75
₦30,000 to a landlord's agent₦50 stamp duty₦26.88 fee + ₦50 stamp duty = ₦76.88
₦30,000 to your own account₦0 (own-account exemption)₦26.88 fee + ₦50 stamp duty = ₦76.88
₦200,000 to a supplier₦50 stamp duty₦53.75 fee + ₦50 stamp duty = ₦103.75

Over a month of twenty ₦30,000 supplier payments, that is ₦1,000 in stamp duty either way, plus ₦537.60 in fees if they all go to other banks (20 × ₦26.88). Whether it is worth asking regular counterparties to bank where you bank is a judgement for you; for most people the convenience of paying anyone instantly outweighs the fee.

Speed: when the difference shows

  • Normal days: both are usually instant.
  • Bank system outages: intrabank may still work when the switch or the other bank is down.
  • Large payments: above daily app limits, an interbank payment may need a different channel or rail; see interbank cut-off times.
  • Reversals: a failed intrabank transfer is fixed by one bank; a failed interbank one needs both banks and the session ID.

Which to use for business payments

For a business, the choice is rarely about the fee alone. Intrabank payments to suppliers at your own bank settle on one ledger, which can make reconciliation simpler, and reversals involve only one bank. Interbank payments reach anyone, and with NIP they are normally as fast. If many of your customers pay you from one bank, a collection account there can reduce failed or delayed inflows, but most businesses accept transfers from every bank. Whatever you choose, keep the session ID or reference for each payment, as it is the key piece of evidence if a transfer goes missing.

Name enquiry protects both

Before you confirm, the app shows the recipient's name. For interbank transfers this comes from a name enquiry to the other bank. Always check it; a correct account number at the wrong bank can belong to someone else, because account numbers are unique only within each institution (see what the NUBAN means).

Where Pryme fits

When you send money from Pryme, the confirmation screen shows the recipient's name and the charges before you approve.

Questions people ask

Is transfer to the same bank free in Nigeria?

Often, yes. UBA and Zenith publish same-bank digital transfers as free. Stamp duty of ₦50 can still apply on ₦10,000 or more to another person.

How much is transfer charges to other banks?

Under the CBN's 2020 guide, the maximum is ₦10 up to ₦5,000, ₦25 from ₦5,001 to ₦50,000 and ₦50 above, plus 7.5% VAT.

Which is faster, intrabank or interbank transfer?

Both are usually instant. Intrabank transfers depend only on one bank, so they are less likely to be held up.

Do I pay stamp duty sending money to my own account in another bank?

The published exemption covers your own accounts at the same institution only, so a transfer of ₦10,000 or more to your account at another bank attracts it.
