Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Importing Nigerian fashion (ankara) to sell in the US

Ankara clothing sold in the US needs fibre content, country of origin and dealer identity on its label, plus the right tariff code and origin.

The short answer

Ankara clothing imported to sell in the US must carry an FTC textile label showing fibre content by percentage, the country where it was made, and the name or RN of the company responsible, plus a care label; importers are legally responsible for it. Customs duty depends on the HTS code, which turns on the garment type and fibre, and on country of origin: a dress sewn in Lagos from fabric printed in China is, for FTC labelling, made in Nigeria of imported fabric.

Three questions for every ankara import

  1. Label: does each piece carry the information the FTC requires?
  2. Origin: which country is the product "of"?
  3. Classification: which Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) code applies, and so which duty?

The first is enforced by the Federal Trade Commission, the other two by CBP when the goods enter. All three sit with the importer, which is usually your US company.

The FTC textile label

The FTC's guide to the Textile and Wool Acts (last modified 10 April 2026) covers most clothing, except hats and shoes, and also "all fibers, yarns and fabrics". Each covered product needs:

Fibre content
generic fibre names and percentages by weight, in order of predominance, such as "100% cotton" or "65% polyester, 35% cotton". "All cotton" is allowed for a single fibre. Fibres under 5% are generally "other fiber(s)".
Country of origin
the country where the product was processed or manufactured, in English, such as "Made in Nigeria" or "Product of Nigeria". A region such as "West Africa" is not enough.
Dealer identity
the business name, or a Registered Identification Number (RN) issued by the FTC.

Garments with a neck need the origin label on the front of a label at the inside centre of the neck. Fibre and dealer details may go on the same label or another accessible one. Care instructions fall under a separate FTC rule, 16 CFR Part 423, and the FTC suggests putting fibre and care information on the same permanent label.

There is a 3% tolerance on fibre percentages, except for single-fibre claims such as "100% cotton", which must be exact. Ask the tailor or fabric seller for the fibre content; fabric sold as cotton is not always pure cotton, and a wrong label is the importer's problem.

Online and bolt fabric

The FTC treats internet advertising as written advertising. An online listing that mentions a fibre must give the fibre content (percentages are not required), and product descriptions must say "Imported", "Made in U.S.A." or the combination. Fabric cut from a labelled bolt or roll does not need its own label, but the bolt does.

Origin: Lagos-made, China-printed

Much ankara wax print sold in Nigerian markets is commonly reported to be printed outside Nigeria. For FTC labelling, the country of origin is where the product was processed or manufactured, so a dress cut and sewn in Lagos is labelled as made in Nigeria; the FTC also says products made in the US from imported materials must say so, for example "Made in U.S.A. of imported fabric". CBP has its own origin-marking rules, which the FTC notes you must also meet, and customs origin decides which tariffs apply. Since 24 July 2026 a 12.5% Section 301 tariff applies to products of Nigeria, with exemptions in annexes to the USTR notice, so whether your goods count as Nigerian or Chinese for customs can change the duty. Ask your broker to confirm origin before you price.

Classification and duty

The duty rate depends on the HTS line, which depends on what the item is (a woman's dress, a man's shirt, fabric by the metre), whether it is knitted or woven, and its main fibre. The ordinary rate is shown in the HTS published by the US International Trade Commission. On top of that, check:

  • the 12.5% Section 301 tariff on products of Nigeria since 24 July 2026, subject to the notice's exemptions;
  • AGOA, which remains authorised through 31 December 2026 and has its own textile certificate of origin; whether your garments qualify, and whether Nigeria is a current beneficiary, needs checking; see does AGOA still apply; and
  • small parcels: duty-free de minimis treatment for postal shipments of $800 or less has been suspended indefinitely, so mailed parcels of clothing are dutiable.

See US tariffs on goods from Nigeria and, for traditional cloth, aso-oke and lace duties.

Steps before your first order

  1. Get fibre content in writing from the fabric seller or tailor.
  2. Register an RN with the FTC or use your company name on labels.
  3. Have neck labels with origin, fibre, dealer identity and care sewn in before shipping.
  4. Ask your broker to classify each garment type and confirm origin and current tariffs.
  5. Keep invoices that describe each item precisely; vague descriptions slow clearance.

Where Pryme fits

Tailors and fabric sellers in Nigeria are paid in naira, often in stages. A Pryme Business Account opened from the US holds USD and NGN with local details; Swap shows the rate and the fee before you approve, and bulk payouts can pay several tailors at once. See business multicurrency accounts.

Questions people ask

Do ankara dresses need labels to sell in the US?

Yes. Covered clothing needs fibre content, country of origin and the dealer's name or RN, and a care label under a separate FTC rule.

Who is responsible for textile labels on imports?

The FTC says importers are legally responsible for accurate labelling of imported goods.

What is the duty on ankara clothing from Nigeria?

It depends on the HTS line for the garment, plus the 12.5% Section 301 tariff on products of Nigeria since 24 July 2026 unless an exemption applies. Ask a broker to classify it.

Can I write "Made in Africa" on the label?

No. The FTC says imported products must name the country where they were made; a region is not enough.
