Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Importing Nigerian beer or palm wine: TTB permits

Alcohol from Nigeria needs a federal importer permit, a label approval for each product, FDA steps and state licences. What TTB says, as at September 2026.

The short answer

To import Nigerian beer, stout or palm wine for sale, you need a federal Basic Importer's Permit from TTB (Form 5100.24, no fee), a Certificate of Label Approval for each product held before the goods arrive, alcohol dealer registration, FDA facility registration and prior notice, and the licences of each state you sell in, according to TTB guidance updated 29 Sep 2026. CBP collects federal excise tax and duty at entry.

Who regulates alcohol imports

Three layers apply to alcohol from Nigeria. The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) controls who may import and what the label says. The FDA treats alcohol as food for registration and prior notice. States control distribution and sale. TTB's guidance "Importing bottled alcohol beverages into the United States" (G 2015-3, updated 29 September 2026) is the starting point.

The federal permit

Anyone in the business of importing distilled spirits, wine or malt beverages needs a Basic Importer's Permit under the Federal Alcohol Administration Act. TTB says:

  • apply on Form TTB F 5100.24 to the National Revenue Center, through Permits Online or on paper;
  • TTB charges no fee for the permit;
  • you need a staffed US business office, or a commercial arrangement with an existing licensed importer;
  • processing times are shown on Permits Online, not on the guidance page;
  • before doing business you must also register as an alcohol dealer on Form TTB F 5630.5(d), and update it when details change.

If you want to start with a few pallets, the arrangement option matters: a licensed importer can bring the product in under its permit while you build the brand. Selling other imported drinks wholesale that you did not import yourself needs a Wholesaler's Basic Permit.

Label approval for each product

Every beer, stout, wine or spirit needs a Certificate of Label Approval (COLA) on Form TTB F 5100.31, filed with TTB's Alcohol Labeling and Formulation Division through COLAs Online. The importer must hold the COLA at the time of importation, so the label must be approved before the container sails, not after it lands. Some products need formula approval before a COLA; TTB points to Industry Circular 2018-6 for when that applies.

Beer and stout

Nigerian lagers and stouts are malt beverages for TTB purposes when they fall within the FAA Act definition. Each brand and size needs its own COLA. A label printed for the Nigerian market will usually need redesigning for the US, and the COLA review is where any gap is found, so budget time for corrections before the order ships.

Palm wine

Palm wine is fermented palm sap, not grapes. TTB's guidance covers wine made from grapes or "other fruit", and the natural wine certification it describes applies to wine from sound, ripe grapes or other fruit. How TTB classes a fermented sap drink is not settled on the page we read, so ask the Alcohol Labeling and Formulation Division (202-453-2250) before you design a label. Fresh palm wine keeps fermenting; a product for export needs to be stabilised and bottled so that its alcohol content at arrival matches the label.

FDA, CBP and the states

StepWhoWhat it involves
Facility registrationFDAThe Nigerian brewery or bottler registers as a food facility.
Prior noticeFDAFiled for every shipment of alcohol imported or offered for import.
Entry, duty and excise taxCBPCBP collects federal excise tax and applicable duty; rates are on the TTB and CBP websites.
TariffsCBPProducts of Nigeria also face the Section 301 tariff unless excluded.
State licencesEach stateContact the alcohol control board of each state where you import or sell.

TTB lists contacts on its guidance: the National Revenue Center for permits (877-882-3277) and the International Affairs Division for general import questions (202-453-2260).

Worked example: a first order of stout

Example only. A Georgia company plans 1,200 cases of a Nigerian stout. It applies for the importer's permit and dealer registration, then files COLAs for the 330 mL and 600 mL bottles once a US-compliant label is designed. Meanwhile the brewery confirms its FDA registration. When the COLAs and permit are in hand, the order is placed and the broker files prior notice and the entry. Georgia licensing is handled in parallel. Ordering before the COLA is approved would leave the stout unable to enter on arrival.

Bringing a few bottles home

Personal imports follow different rules from commercial ones, and TTB publishes separate guidance on personal importation. A few bottles brought in as gifts are not a route to selling: anything you plan to sell needs the permit, COLA and state licences above.

Steps in order

  1. Decide whether to get your own permit or work under a licensed importer.
  2. File the permit application and dealer registration.
  3. Redesign labels for the US and file a COLA for each product and size.
  4. Confirm the producer's FDA registration and set up prior notice with your broker.
  5. Secure state licences and a distributor where the state requires one.
  6. Price in excise tax, duty and the Section 301 tariff; see current tariffs.

For non-alcoholic drinks, see Malta, Zobo and soft drinks.

Where Pryme fits

Breweries in Nigeria are usually paid in naira, while permits, freight and excise tax are paid in dollars. A Pryme Business Account holds both (business multicurrency), and the Compliance agent can keep track of renewal dates and documents for your approval.

Questions people ask

Do I need a TTB permit to import Nigerian beer?

Yes, to import for business you need a Basic Importer's Permit (TTB F 5100.24), or an arrangement with an existing licensed importer. TTB charges no fee.

What is a COLA?

A Certificate of Label Approval from TTB, needed for each product and held by the importer at the time of importation.

Can palm wine be imported into the US?

It may be, but how TTB classes fermented palm sap is not set out in its general import guidance. Ask TTB's labelling division before designing a label.

Does the FDA also regulate imported alcohol?

Yes. The producing facility must be registered with the FDA and prior notice must be filed for each shipment.
