Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Canada

Importing Nigerian beans into Canada: CFIA status

What the CFIA requires before dried beans from Nigeria can be imported for sale in Canada, and the checks a careful importer builds into its plan.

The short answer

Dried beans imported for sale in Canada are food under the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations, so the importer needs an SFC licence, a preventive control plan and a declaration to the CBSA and CFIA for each shipment. The CFIA says that outside meat and shellfish the regulations do not restrict imports from particular countries, but the product-specific conditions for beans from Nigeria are whatever AIRS returns on the day you check.

Honey beans (oloyin), brown beans and black-eyed beans are staples in Nigerian homes in Canada, and importers ask whether Nigerian beans are allowed. There is no simple yes or no on a CFIA web page for "Nigerian beans". There is a system, and once you understand it you can get a firm answer for your exact product.

Beans for sale are food, so the SFCR applies

The CFIA's step-by-step guide (modified 17 September 2026) says a licence is required to import food, including food ingredients. You apply through My CFIA, and the licence lasts two years. Before applying, you need a preventive control plan (the guide calls it a requirement of your import licence) and written complaint and recall procedures.

On country restrictions, the guide says that apart from meat and shellfish the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations do not restrict imports from particular countries or suppliers, but AIRS may list other restrictions. So Nigeria is not barred as a source for beans under the food safety rules; the conditions are product by product.

Step one: run AIRS for your exact product

AIRS, the Automated Import Reference System, shows CFIA import requirements once you choose the commodity, origin, destination and end use. For beans, the end use matters: beans for human consumption, beans for sowing and beans for animal feed are different things in plant-health terms. Run it with origin Nigeria and end use human consumption, print the result, and keep it with the shipment file. AIRS is a reference tool; the CFIA tells importers to rely on the acts and regulations and to check AIRS again before each import because it changes often. We walk through the tool in using AIRS before importing Nigerian food.

Step two: the supplier and the hazards

The CFIA's guide asks you to know the food and the supply chain and to identify reasonably expected hazards. For a Nigerian bean supplier that is not covered by a recognised system or third-party certification, the guide says you confirm controls through on-site visits by a technically competent person, or written documentation signed by a process authority.

Example only: an importer's hazard analysis for dried beans might consider pesticide residues, storage insects, stones and other foreign matter, and mould from damp storage, then set controls such as supplier specifications, lot testing by a laboratory and inspection on arrival. Which controls are enough is a judgement your preventive control plan must justify.

Step three: declare each shipment correctly

Each food shipment destined for sale is declared to the CBSA and CFIA on an Integrated Import Declaration, up to 90 days before arrival. Enter your licence number exactly as issued, with the HS code and the CFIA extension that AIRS gives you. The CFIA lists the reasons a declaration is rejected (licence number missing, malformed, expired, suspended, or not issued for importing that commodity) and says the shipment will be denied entry until the error is fixed and the declaration resubmitted. If a shipment is held, see what to do when CBSA holds a food shipment.

Packaging and supplier paperwork

Agree in writing what each lot will arrive with: the supplier's name and address, the lot or batch number on every sack, the harvest or packing date, and any test results. If you repack bulk beans into retail bags in Canada, your own packing step becomes part of your preventive control plan and your traceability records. Writing these terms into the purchase order costs nothing and gives you something to point to when a lot does not match.

Step four: after arrival

  • Keep traceability records one step back (your supplier) and one step forward (your customers) for two years, in English or French, accessible in Canada.
  • Keep supplier documentation for two years and update the plan when a supplier changes.
  • Run a recall simulation at least once every 12 months and keep the record.
  • Label the retail packs to Canadian rules; see bilingual labels on imported food.

Costs to budget for

None of these come from the CFIA's pages as figures, so get quotes: the licence application through My CFIA, laboratory testing per lot, a customs broker's fee per entry, freight and insurance, duty under the Customs Tariff for the bean product's HS code (see finding the tariff rate), and storage while a held lot is reviewed.

Where Pryme fits

Bean suppliers in Nigeria usually want naira. A Pryme Business Account holds NGN alongside USD, GBP and EUR, so you can pay a Lagos or Kano supplier in naira; the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve. A verifiable receipt for each payment helps your traceability file.

Questions people ask

Are Nigerian beans banned in Canada?

The CFIA's guide says that apart from meat and shellfish the SFCR does not restrict imports from particular countries. Product conditions come from AIRS, so check it for your exact bean product and end use.

Do I need an SFC licence to import beans?

Yes, if the beans are imported for sale. The CFIA says a licence is required to import food, including ingredients.

Can I bring beans from Nigeria in my luggage?

Food for personal use follows separate rules, and you must declare food at the border. Our guide to declaring Nigerian food at Pearson covers travellers.

How long is a CFIA import licence valid?

Two years, according to the CFIA's step-by-step guide, renewable as it nears expiry.
