Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2016E-commerce

An online grocery store, built out of a faulty tab. Selling the food was the easy part — taking the money for it, and moving it, turned out to be the business.

2018OjirehPrime Card

A prepaid card. The first time the company issued rather than resold, and the first time it carried the obligations that come with holding somebody else’s money.

2020Microfinance bank

PrymeSolid Allianze acquired — an existing bank with an existing licence. The perimeter stopped being someone else’s to draw.

2023Multicurrency

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.

2026Agentic operations

Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Spain

Can I import Nigerian foodstuff into Spain?

Spain applies EU food law to Nigerian foodstuff: extra sesame checks, strict rules on animal products, EU labelling and the customs steps.

The short answer

Yes, but as a commercial import under EU food law. Plant foods such as garri, egusi and ogbono can enter if they meet EU safety and labelling rules; Nigerian sesame faces 50% border checks for Salmonella under Regulation 2019/1793. Meat, dairy and fish products need EU-approved countries and plants, which we could not confirm for Nigeria. You need an EORI, a customs agent and EU-compliant labels.

Yes, with EU rules that are stricter than many importers expect

Spain applies EU food law, so importing garri, egusi, ogbono, palm oil, dried pepper, yam flour or stockfish from Nigeria for sale is allowed in principle, but every product must meet EU safety and labelling rules and some face extra border checks. The traveller's allowance for personal food does not cover goods for sale; once you sell, you are a food business importing from a non-EU country.

Products with extra checks or restrictions

Product groupWhat appliesSource
Sesame seeds (and some sesame preparations)Listed for Nigeria in Annex II of Regulation (EU) 2019/1793 for Salmonella: entry with official certificate and 50% identity and physical checksImplementing Reg (EU) 2025/1441
Meat, milk and products made from them (suya, ponmo, kpomo, wara)Animal products need an EU-approved country and establishment; we could not confirm any Nigerian approval for theseEU rules on products of animal origin
Fish and dried fish, crayfish, snailsProducts of animal origin; entry through a border control post with health certification, and listing of the country and plantCheck before ordering
Palm oilEU contaminant limits apply; check the dye and contaminant questions in our palm oil guideSee our palm oil guide
Egusi, groundnuts, kuli kuliMycotoxins such as aflatoxin are among the most frequent hazards in EU food alerts; test before shippingRASFF summary (Agrolab, July 2026)

The amended Regulation 2019/1793, as changed by Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1441 of 18 July 2025, lists Nigeria only for sesame seeds and certain sesame products, with Salmonella as the hazard and a 50% check frequency. Other Nigerian plant foods are not on that list, but they still go through normal official controls. For details on sesame, see our sesame guide; for palm oil, palm oil and the EUDR.

Animal products are the hard part. The EU only admits meat, dairy and fish products from countries and establishments it has listed. We could not confirm whether Nigeria or any Nigerian plant is listed for any of these products, so do not commit to a shipment of dried fish or crayfish until your customs agent or the Spanish border authority has confirmed it can enter.

Labelling for sale in Spain

Food sold to consumers must carry the particulars required by Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011, which the Irish food authority's summary lists as: name of the food, ingredients, allergens emphasised in the list, quantity of certain ingredients, net quantity, date mark, storage conditions, the name and address of the food business responsible, country of origin where its absence would mislead, instructions where needed and a nutrition declaration. The business under whose name the food is marketed is responsible. Many Nigerian packs lack an EU nutrition table or allergen emphasis, so plan to relabel. Spanish language requirements are covered in Nigerian food labelling under Spanish rules.

The customs steps

  1. Get an EORI number. DHL's guide notes that an EORI is compulsory for operators subject to EU customs controls and is valid across the EU.
  2. Classify each product under the EU tariff code to find the duty, any GSP preference and any controls. Nigeria is a beneficiary of the EU's standard GSP scheme, which suspends duty on non-sensitive products and reduces it on sensitive ones (GSP Hub).
  3. Have the Nigerian exporter arrange its side: Nigeria's Trade Information Portal lists the NXP export form, NAFDAC and quarantine permits where relevant, and a certificate of origin.
  4. For processed food, ask the exporter for the NAFDAC health certificate that NAFDAC's export rules provide for.
  5. Use a customs agent in Spain to lodge the import declaration and handle any border control post for the products that need one.
  6. Pay duty and import IVA, then clear and store the goods.

Costs to budget for

  • Freight and insurance from Lagos, which also form part of the customs value.
  • Customs duty at the tariff rate for each code, unless a GSP preference applies and you hold a valid statement on origin.
  • Import IVA on the value plus duty.
  • Customs agent fees and any border control post inspection and laboratory fees.
  • Relabelling, storage and any rejected stock.

Before the first order

  • Ask for lab results for aflatoxin and Salmonella where relevant.
  • Check the supplier is registered with CAC and NAFDAC (see verifying supplier documents).
  • Start with a small mixed consignment to learn the costs.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Business Account can pay Nigerian suppliers in naira and hold euros from your sales, with Swap showing the rate and fee before you approve. The Compliance agent can keep your certificates and lab reports on file; a person approves anything above the limits you set.

Questions people ask

Can I import garri and egusi to sell in Spain?

Yes, as plant foods they can enter if they meet EU safety limits, especially for aflatoxin, and carry EU-compliant labels.

Can I import dried fish or crayfish from Nigeria to Spain?

These are products of animal origin and need an EU-listed country and establishment. Confirm listing with your customs agent before ordering.

Why is Nigerian sesame checked so often?

Regulation 2019/1793, as amended in July 2025, lists Nigerian sesame for Salmonella with 50% identity and physical checks.

Do I need an EORI number to import food into Spain?

Yes. An EORI is compulsory for businesses dealing with EU customs and is valid across the EU.
