Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Ghana

Do I need an FDA permit to import garri and palm oil to Ghana?

Packaged garri and palm oil for sale need FDA registration, a licensed importer and an eMDA permit per consignment. Bulk staples may differ.

The short answer

If the garri or palm oil is packed and labelled for sale, yes: Ghana's FDA requires the importer to be FDA-licensed, the product to be registered, and an electronic import permit for each consignment. Registration and the permit are different things: registration approves the product once, the permit clears each shipment. Bulk, unpackaged staples may be handled differently, including by the plant protection directorate, so ask the FDA which applies to your form of the product.

Registration versus permit

Traders often use "FDA permit" to mean everything. The FDA's Guideline on Processing of Import Permit and Clearance of Prepackaged Foods (FDA/ICD/GDL-02/05, effective 2 July 2025) separates three steps.

StepWhat it approvesHow often
Importer licenceYour business as an importer of foodOnce, then renewed
Product registrationEach product, brand and pack sizeOnce per product, then renewed
Import permit (eMDA)One consignment of registered productsEvery shipment

The guideline says only businesses licensed by the FDA as importers may import, and that prepackaged foods for local consumption must be registered before import. The US International Trade Administration's Ghana guide (6 August 2025) says the import permit is valid for one year. Where the two are worded differently, the FDA's own guideline governs.

Is my garri "prepackaged"?

This is the question that decides the route. A labelled 2 kg pack of garri or a branded 1-litre bottle of palm oil is a prepackaged food. A 50 kg sack of unbranded garri or a drum of palm oil sold on to market traders may not be. The ITA guide says other agricultural products need importer registration and a permit from the Plant Protection and Regulatory Services Directorate (PPRSD), and that a product can appear on both the FDA and PPRSD lists. Ask the FDA, in writing, how it treats your exact product and packaging before your first shipment, and keep the answer.

Getting the permit for each consignment

  1. Confirm your FDA importer licence is current.
  2. Confirm each product and pack size has its FDA registration number.
  3. Apply for an eMDA permit with brand, registration number, HS code, unit (kg or litres), importer and exporter details.
  4. Pay the verification fee, which the FDA sets on the consignment's FOB value, through a bank, ghana.gov or an approved point of entry.
  5. Wait up to one working day after payment for processing; track status online.
  6. Present the approved permit to Customs once; goods are physically inspected at the port or border.

Fees are not printed in the guideline. The ITA guide lists FDA importer fees of 0.8% for food. Our page on the FDA import permit and its cost works through an example.

What gets garri and palm oil held

  • Shelf life. At least two-thirds must remain at clearance. Palm oil packed in Lagos with a 12-month life must have at least eight months left when it reaches Ghana.
  • No registration. The FDA may issue a temporary pseudo registration number and clear under detention, or detain, seize, re-export or destroy at the importer's cost.
  • Labelling. Products that do not conform to labelling rules are non-compliant, and imported food must meet existing Ghana Standards.
  • Unfit food. Food declared unfit for human consumption by a Health Officer is on GRA Customs' absolute prohibition list.
  • Underdeclared value. The shortfall in fee plus a 100% penalty.

Worked example

Example only. An Accra shop owner imports, each month, 400 packs of 2 kg branded garri and 200 bottles of 1-litre palm oil from an Ogun State packer. She holds an FDA importer licence; the packer's two products are registered with the FDA in her company's name as importer. Each month her agent applies for an eMDA permit for that consignment, pays the verification fee on the FOB value, and the truck is inspected at Aflao. One month the palm oil has only six months of a twelve-month life left, below two-thirds, and is held. She now asks the packer to ship within two months of production.

What to check first

  • Is the product prepackaged, and is it FDA-registered for your company as importer?
  • Does the PPRSD also regulate it in the form you are shipping?
  • Is there enough shelf life left by the time it reaches Ghana?
  • Are labels compliant with Ghanaian rules, not only Nigerian ones?
  • Is the declared FOB value the true invoice value?

If you are the Nigerian packer

Your Ghanaian buyer carries the FDA paperwork, but you control most of what makes a consignment pass. Print production and expiry dates clearly, ship soon after production so the two-thirds shelf-life rule is met, keep labels consistent with what was registered, and give the importer the technical details the FDA asks for at registration. Agree a maximum time from production to dispatch in your supply contract. A packer that does this well is easier to buy from than one with a lower price and a held truck every other month.

For the wider set of foodstuff rules, including soup ingredients and snacks, see importing Nigerian foodstuff into Ghana.

Where Pryme fits

Paying a Nigerian packer each month is a regular, documented payment. A Pryme Business account can hold naira for supplier payments, and verifiable receipts through VerifyDoc.ai give the packer and the FDA file a clean record. Outside Nigeria, Pryme works through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

Do I need FDA registration to sell Nigerian garri in Ghana?

For prepackaged garri sold in Ghana, yes: the FDA guideline requires prepackaged foods for local consumption to be registered before import.

Is an FDA import permit the same as product registration?

No. Registration approves the product; the eMDA import permit clears each consignment of registered products.

How much shelf life must palm oil have to enter Ghana?

The FDA guideline requires at least two-thirds of the shelf life to remain at port clearance.

What if I import garri in big sacks?

Bulk agricultural products may need a PPRSD permit, and may also be FDA-regulated. Ask the FDA how it treats your packaging.
