Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Importing Ankara fabric and clothing from Nigeria into SA: duty

How SARS charges duty and VAT on African print fabric and garments from Nigeria, why the travel allowance will not cover stock, and label checks.

The short answer

Ankara fabric and clothing shipped from Nigeria for resale are commercial imports: SARS assesses customs duty by the tariff heading of each item and VAT on top, and the R5,000 traveller allowance does not apply to commercial goods. Fabric and finished garments sit under different tariff headings, so get the classification right before you price your stock.

Many Nigerian traders in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town bring in Ankara, lace, aso-oke and ready-made outfits from Lagos and Aba. The question that decides your margin is how SARS treats those goods at the border. The answer depends on three things: whether the goods are for sale, what exactly they are (fabric by the metre or finished garments), and how they arrive.

Commercial goods are not covered by the traveller allowance

SARS gives each traveller a duty-free allowance for new or used goods worth up to R5,000, usable once per person in a 30-day period, according to its Duties and Taxes for Travellers page (updated December 2024). SARS's external guide on traveller allowances (SC-PA-01-03, revision 8, effective 1 July 2026) is clear that commercial goods do not qualify, that goods carried on behalf of other people get no allowance, and that the allowance is for personal use or gifts.

There is one carve-out traders sometimes hear about: handmade articles of leather, wood, plastic, stone, glass and similar materials, up to 25 kg, may be declared duty and tax free even if intended for commercial purposes. That relief is limited to goods of SACU or SADC origin. Nigeria is in West Africa and is not a SADC member, so hand-woven or hand-dyed fabric from Nigeria does not benefit from it.

How the duty is worked out

Customs duty in South Africa is set per tariff heading in Schedule 1 of the Customs and Excise Act, and each heading has its own rate. For a fabric trader that means:

  • Woven printed cotton fabric (most wax prints) falls under a fabric heading in the textiles chapters, classified by fibre and weave.
  • Finished garments (bubu, agbada, kaftans, made-up dresses) fall under clothing headings, classified by whether they are knitted or woven, by fibre and by type of garment.
  • Embellished items such as beaded lace or stoned fabric may classify differently from plain prints, so do not assume one rate covers all your stock.

We have not quoted the duty rate for any heading here because rates are set per line and change; look up the heading in the SARS tariff book or ask a licensed clearing agent to classify a sample invoice before you place a big order. VAT is then charged on the customs value plus the duty. Because garments and fabric can carry very different rates, a mixed consignment can cost noticeably more than the fabric-only price suggests.

A worked example (illustrative rates only)

Assume a consignment of printed fabric with a customs value of R40,000. If the duty rate on that heading were 20% (example only), duty would be R8,000. VAT is then levied on R48,000. If the same R40,000 were finished garments on a heading with a 40% rate (example only), duty would be R16,000 and VAT would be charged on R56,000. The R8,000 gap in duty alone, before VAT, is why classification matters more than haggling over freight.

Item (example)Customs valueExample duty rateDutyValue VAT is charged on
Printed fabricR40,00020% (example)R8,000R48,000
Finished garmentsR40,00040% (example)R16,000R56,000

How your goods arrive changes the paperwork

Goods sent through the post are handled under SARS's international mail policy (SC-MT-02): the postal label or form counts as the customs declaration if it carries enough information, goods stay under customs control until duty is paid, and SARS can ask for a full clearance declaration with supporting documents. A courier or freight forwarder will clear larger loads for you on a formal declaration. For anything above a small sample, a formal entry through an agent with the supplier's commercial invoice is the cleaner route, and it gives you the customs declaration your bank may need later. See proof of import for SARB.

Labels on clothing and fabric

South Africa has its own labelling requirements for textiles and clothing, commonly reported to cover fibre content, country of origin and care instructions. Most Nigerian market fabric arrives without these labels. Confirm the current rule with the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition or your clearing agent before you sell, and budget for adding labels to finished garments.

What to check first

  1. Is every item on the invoice described precisely (fibre, printed or dyed, garment type)?
  2. Have you had the main lines classified and priced for duty before ordering?
  3. Is the supplier issuing a proper commercial invoice? On the Nigerian side an exporter files a Form NXP; see Form NXP explained.
  4. Will your garments need labels added in South Africa?
  5. How will you pay the supplier, and what will your bank ask for? See paying a Nigerian supplier from an SA business account.

Where Pryme fits

If you buy from Lagos or Aba traders who want naira, a Pryme Business Account can be opened from South Africa and holds naira, dollars, pounds and euros, so you can pay suppliers in naira through Send. The app shows the rate and the fee before you approve. Outside Nigeria, Pryme's services are provided through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

Can I bring Ankara from Nigeria duty free if I carry it myself?

Only goods for personal use or gifts can use the R5,000 allowance. Fabric you plan to sell is commercial and must be declared.

Is fabric from Nigeria covered by the SADC handmade goods relief?

No. SARS limits that relief to handmade articles of SACU or SADC origin, and Nigeria is not a SADC member.

Is duty higher on finished clothes than on fabric?

Often, because garments and fabric sit under different tariff headings. Check each heading in the SARS tariff book or ask a clearing agent.

Do I pay VAT on top of customs duty?

Yes. VAT is calculated on the customs value plus duty, so a higher duty rate also raises the VAT.
