Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Bills

Moving house in Ikeja Electric area: what happens to the meter

The meter stays with the property. What outgoing and incoming tenants should do with Ikeja Electric, readings, credit and any unpaid bill when you move.

The short answer

The meter belongs with the premises, not with you, so when you move out of a flat in the Ikeja Electric area the meter stays behind. The key steps are a dated final reading, settling or recording any postpaid balance, and asking Ikeja Electric in writing to update the occupant's name. An incoming tenant should get the meter number and current reading on day one and query any arrears that pre-date the tenancy.

Whose meter is it?

A meter is installed for a supply point at an address. Whether it was provided by Ikeja Electric, by a Meter Asset Provider under the MAP scheme, or paid for by a landlord, it is fixed to the building and serves whoever lives there. You do not take it with you, and you should not remove or disconnect it. What changes when you move is the person responsible for paying for the power the meter records.

On prepaid meters, that means whoever buys tokens. On postpaid accounts, it means whoever is named on the account, which is why updating the name matters.

If you are moving out

  1. Take a dated photo of the meter display on your last day, showing the reading or remaining credit and the meter number.
  2. On prepaid, decide what to do with leftover units. Credit on the meter cannot be moved to another meter. Many tenants agree a refund with the landlord or incoming tenant, or simply stop buying in the last weeks.
  3. On postpaid, ask Ikeja Electric for a final bill based on your final reading, pay it, and keep the receipt.
  4. Write to Ikeja Electric, through its official channels, saying you have left the premises on a given date and asking them to close your responsibility on the account from that date. Keep the reference.
  5. Give your landlord a copy of the final reading, final bill and receipt.

If you are moving in

  1. On day one, photograph the meter number and reading or credit, dated.
  2. Ask the landlord or agent for the latest bill or token receipt and confirm whether there are any arrears.
  3. Ask Ikeja Electric for the account history and to change the occupant's name to yours from your move-in date.
  4. On prepaid, check whether tokens are being reduced to repay an old debt. If units on your receipt are lower than expected, ask Ikeja Electric whether a debt is being recovered from the meter.
  5. Make sure the band and tariff class match the property and its supply. See checking your electricity band.

Old debts: who pays?

This is where most disputes start. We could not find a current Ikeja Electric or Lagos regulator page that sets the rule out in plain terms, so treat what follows as practical guidance and confirm the position with Ikeja Electric in writing for your account. The arguments that usually carry weight are the dates: when you moved in, when the debt arose and whose name was on the account. A debt that pre-dates your tenancy and was billed to a previous occupant should be raised with Ikeja Electric with proof of your move-in date, such as the tenancy agreement and your day-one meter photo.

SituationWhat to ask for
Arrears from before you moved inRemoval from your bills, with your tenancy start date as proof
Debt recovered from your prepaid tokensA statement of the debt, its period and the account it relates to
Landlord asks you to clear the old balanceThe bill showing the period; agree in writing whether it is deducted from rent
Your own final bill after you leftYour final reading and receipt, sent to Ikeja Electric and the landlord

If Ikeja Electric does not resolve it, NERC's published route is the DisCo, then the Forum office, then the regulator, and in states with their own regulator the later steps go there; for Lagos that is LASERC, following its 2025 order. See disputing an Ikeja Electric bill.

Landlords should also keep their own copy of each handover reading. A landlord who can show the reading at every change of tenant is in a much stronger position if Ikeja Electric later raises a debt against the premises.

Worked example: settling prepaid credit between tenants

Example figures only. The outgoing tenant's last token bought 60 kWh for ₦12,000, so each unit cost ₦200 (12,000 divided by 60). On moving day the meter shows 25 kWh left. Valued at the same price, that is ₦5,000 of credit (25 times 200). The incoming tenant agrees to pay ₦5,000 to the outgoing tenant, both sign a note with the meter number, date and reading, and each keeps a copy.

Our wider guide to moving flat in Lagos covers water and waste bills as well.

Where Pryme fits

When money changes hands between tenants or with a landlord, a clear record helps. If you pay the settlement or buy your first token through Pryme or electricity bills in the app, the receipt stays in the app, and with Pryme's partner VerifyDoc.ai you can produce a verifiable receipt that the other party can check is genuine and unaltered.

Questions people ask

Can I take my prepaid meter when I move house?

No. The meter is fixed to the premises and serves whoever lives there. Do not remove or disconnect it.

Am I responsible for the previous tenant's NEPA bill?

Raise any debt from before your tenancy with Ikeja Electric, with proof of your move-in date, and ask for the account history. Confirm the position for your account in writing.

How do I change the name on my Ikeja Electric meter?

Ask Ikeja Electric through its official channels to update the occupant's name from your move-in date, and keep the reference.

Can unused units on my prepaid meter be transferred?

Not to another meter. Agree a settlement with the landlord or incoming tenant instead.
