Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Bills

How to find your Ikeja Electric meter or account number

Prepaid customers buy with the meter number, postpaid customers pay with the account number. Here is where each one is printed and how to recover it.

The short answer

If you are on a prepaid meter, the number you need to buy a token is the meter number, printed on the meter's label and repeated on every token receipt. If you are on postpaid billing, you pay against your Ikeja Electric account number, which is printed on the monthly bill. If you have neither in front of you, Ikeja Electric's customer care can trace it from the address and the name on the account.

Meter number or account number: which one you need

Ikeja Electric customers fall into two groups, and each group pays with a different number. Mixing them up is the most common reason a token purchase fails at the first step, so it helps to know which group you are in before you start looking.

You areNumber you useUsed for
Prepaid (keypad meter)Meter numberBuying tokens from any vendor, app or agent
Postpaid (bill every month)Account numberChecking and paying the monthly bill
Recently moved from postpaid to prepaidMeter number for tokens; the old account number may still be needed to clear an old balanceTokens, plus settling any arrears

If you are not sure which group you are in, look at how you pay now. If you buy a code and type it into a keypad, you are prepaid. If a paper or SMS bill arrives with an amount to pay, you are postpaid. Our guide to prepaid and postpaid electricity explains the difference in more detail.

Where the meter number is on a prepaid meter

Every prepaid meter carries a printed label with its serial number, which is the meter number vendors ask for. Where the label sits depends on the make and model, so check these places in order:

  1. The front of the meter body, usually on a sticker or plate near the barcode, or below the display.
  2. The customer interface unit (the small keypad unit indoors), if your meter is a split type with the measuring unit mounted outside or on a pole. The keypad unit often shows the number on its own label or can display it from the keypad menu described in the meter's manual.
  3. The installation paperwork or meter card you were given when the meter was fitted, including any document from the Meter Asset Provider that installed it.
  4. Any previous token receipt, whether paper from a vendor or an SMS, email or in-app receipt. The meter number is printed beside the token on every receipt.

Read the number carefully off the label and type it exactly. Do not guess at a smudged digit: a wrong meter number either fails validation or, worse, validates against someone else's meter.

Where the account number is on a postpaid bill

Postpaid customers receive a monthly bill, and the account number is printed on it alongside the customer name, address, tariff class and band. Ikeja Electric's website invites customers to register to receive their monthly bills by SMS or email, so if you have registered, search your messages and inbox for the latest bill. An old bill is fine for finding the account number, because the number does not change from month to month.

Some postpaid customers have both a meter number (a postpaid meter that is read monthly) and an account number. For payment, the account number is the one that matters.

If you have no receipt, no bill and no readable label

This is common for new tenants who have arrived in a flat with no paperwork. The options, roughly in order of speed:

  • Ask the landlord, caretaker or previous tenant. They often have a receipt or bill with the number.
  • Look at the meter display. Many keypad meters can show their own serial number from a short key sequence listed in the user manual for that model. The sequence differs by make, so use the manual rather than a code copied from social media.
  • Contact Ikeja Electric customer care through the channels on its official website or printed on any old bill. Give the full address, the name on the account if known, and your nearest landmark. Keep the complaint or ticket reference they give you.
  • Visit the Ikeja Electric business unit or customer care office that serves your area. Take proof that you live at the address, such as a tenancy agreement.

If Ikeja Electric cannot or will not identify the meter or account for your address, keep the reference and escalate. NERC sets out the route as your DisCo first, then the Forum office, then the regulator, and notes that in states with their own regulator the later steps go to that regulator; Lagos now has its own, LASERC.

If you are not sure whether your street is served by Ikeja Electric or Eko, check which DisCo serves your Lagos street first, so you contact the right company.

What to check first before you buy

  1. Confirm you are prepaid (meter number) or postpaid (account number).
  2. Copy the number from the label or a recent receipt, digit by digit.
  3. Enter it with your vendor and wait for the name and address to appear.
  4. Check that the name and address match your premises before you pay.
  5. Keep the receipt. It is your record of the number for next time, and your evidence if the token does not load.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme lets you pay electricity bills in the app, and you enter the meter or account number in the same way as with any other vendor, check the name returned, then approve. Every payment produces a receipt you can keep, and with Pryme's partner VerifyDoc.ai you can generate a verifiable receipt that anyone can check is genuine and unaltered. See electricity bills and receipts.

Questions people ask

Where can I see my meter number on my prepaid meter?

On the printed label on the meter body or on the indoor keypad unit, and on any previous token receipt. The exact spot depends on the meter make.

Is the meter number the same as the account number?

No. Prepaid customers buy tokens with the meter number. Postpaid customers pay with the account number printed on the monthly bill.

I just moved in and have no receipt. How do I get my meter number?

Ask the landlord or previous tenant, check the meter label and manual, or contact Ikeja Electric customer care with the full address and keep the ticket reference.

Why does the vendor show a different name when I enter my meter number?

Either a digit is wrong or the meter is still registered to a previous occupant or the landlord. Recheck the number, and if it is right, ask Ikeja Electric about updating the occupant details.
