Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Banking how-tos

How to dispute a bank charge in Nigeria

Spotted a charge you did not expect? How to check it against the CBN Guide to Charges, complain to your bank and escalate to the CBN.

The short answer

To dispute a bank charge in Nigeria, compare it with the CBN Guide to Charges and your bank's tariff, then complain to the bank in writing and get a tracking number. Under the CBN's complaint guide the bank should acknowledge within 3 days and you should allow about 2 weeks; if it is not resolved, escalate to the CBN Consumer Protection Department at cpd@cbn.gov.ng.

Unexpected debits on a statement are one of the most common banking complaints in Nigeria. Many are legitimate, such as SMS alerts, stamp duty or transfer fees, but some are wrong or above what the CBN permits. You have a clear path to challenge them. The key is evidence and the right order of escalation.

Step one: identify the charge

Look at the narration on the debit line and match it to one of the charge types below. The CBN Guide to Charges (effective 1 January 2020) applies to all CBN-licensed institutions and says it is not exhaustive, but it sets the ceiling for the common ones.

ChargeWhat the 2020 CBN guide says
Transfer to another bank₦10 below ₦5,000; ₦25 from ₦5,001 to ₦50,000; ₦50 above ₦50,000
SMS alertsCost recovery on customer-induced transactions; no charge for bank-induced ones
Email alertsNo charge
Naira debit card maintenanceNo charge on current-account cards; savings-linked cards up to ₦50 a quarter
Monthly statementFree; special printed statements up to ₦20 a page
Dormant account reactivationWaived
Account closureWaived
Not-on-us ATM withdrawal₦35 after the third withdrawal in a month

Some lines are not bank fees at all. The ₦50 stamp duty on transfers of ₦10,000 or more is a tax, explained in our EMTL and stamp duty guide. VAT at 7.5% is added to fees, not to the amount you send.

Step two: check your bank's own tariff

Banks publish their own tariffs, which can be lower than the CBN ceiling but should not be higher for items the CBN caps. UBA, for example, publishes a service charges document; Standard Chartered Nigeria publishes a price guide. If your bank's figure is above the CBN figure for a capped item, note both in your complaint.

Step three: complain to the bank first

The CBN will not take up a complaint the bank has not had a chance to resolve. Its guide How to Lodge a Complaint (January 2022) says to complain to the institution first. The bank should acknowledge and issue a tracking number within 3 days, and you should allow 2 weeks for resolution.

  1. Write to the bank by email, in the app's complaint section or by letter at the branch. Keep a copy.
  2. State your name, account name and the last four digits of the account, the date and amount of each disputed debit and its narration.
  3. Say why you think it is wrong (for example, "charged ₦50 card maintenance on a current account").
  4. Ask for a refund of the charge and a written explanation.
  5. Record the tracking number and the date.

Step four: escalate to the CBN

If the bank does not acknowledge within 3 days or does not resolve the complaint within the period, write to the Director, Consumer Protection Department, CBN, Central Business District, Abuja. You can deliver it at the CBN head office or any CBN branch, or email cpd@cbn.gov.ng. Include:

  • Your name, address, phone and email
  • The bank and branch
  • The date and history of the transaction
  • The amount you are claiming
  • Supporting documents: statement extract, screenshots, the bank's reply
  • Proof that you first reported it to the bank, with the tracking number

For a broader guide covering fintechs as well as banks, read how to complain about a bank or fintech. For what happens after you escalate, see complaining to the CBN Consumer Protection Department, and for refund rules on overcharges, when the CBN makes banks refund charges.

Common charges people dispute, and what usually explains them

  • Two ₦50 debits on one transfer. One may be the stamp duty on transfers of ₦10,000 or more and the other a transfer fee; check the narrations.
  • SMS alert charges. The CBN guide permits cost recovery for alerts on transactions you start, so a monthly SMS debit is not wrong in itself; a charge for alerts on bank-initiated entries can be challenged.
  • Account maintenance (CAMF). The 2026 exposure draft proposes changes, but until a final guide is issued, check the current ceiling in your bank's tariff.
  • Repeated reversals. A failed transfer that was refunded but whose fee was kept is worth disputing; ask for the fee back with the original reference.
  • Card fees on a card you did not request. Ask for the card request record.

Worked example

Example only. Over six months, your current account shows a ₦50 card maintenance debit each quarter: two debits, ₦100 in total, plus VAT of ₦7.50, so ₦107.50. The 2020 guide says naira cards on current accounts carry no maintenance charge. You write to the bank listing both dates, quote the guide, and ask for ₦107.50 back. If the bank replies that the account is a savings account, check the account type on your opening documents before escalating.

Where Pryme fits

Good evidence makes a dispute faster. Any Pryme customer can generate a verifiable statement through our partnership with VerifyDoc.ai, and the recipient can confirm it is genuine and unaltered. See receipts and statements.

Questions people ask

Can banks charge card maintenance fees?

Under the 2020 CBN Guide to Charges, no maintenance charge applies to naira cards on current accounts; savings-linked cards can be charged up to ₦50 a quarter.
